Actor Aremu Afolayan Says Actors That Own Houses In Choice Areas Are Into Something Else

Nollywood Actor Aremu Afolayan is not convinced that many actors opting to own choice houses in posh parts of Lagos, made their money through the craft.

The actor told Saturday Beats that Nigerians are quick to believe anything especially once it is on the internet but the truth is that most actors driving big cars most likely got their money from influential people.

He said, “By the way, I live my life, people tend to think that I am the richest Yoruba actor, but that is a lie. Nigerians assume a lot. I live in a rented apartment because I cannot afford to build one. When they see me buy a new car, they don’t know if I paid for the car in instalments; instead they call me a big boy. What type of big boy lives on N50,000 or N100,000 income per film as an actor?

I challenge any Nigerian actor that is living larger than life to state how they made their money because I am sure it is not from the movies they make. I am talking about both the English and Yoruba actors. If they like, they can say they make N5m per film, they cannot afford to build or buy a house at Lekki or Victoria Island or Ikoyi. It is impossible.

They should call out mathematicians to figure it out. It is a lie. It is because they meet some influential people that give them businesses or they have side businesses. Since we do not all meet such people or make the kind of money they make through these people, we just have to be content with what we have. In my life, I have never seen an ‘educated illiterate’ country like Nigeria. Nigerians are very gullible when it comes to judging other people’s lifestyle since they do not know anything, they assume. Then social media came and it made things worse.”

The filmmaker who is often referred to as one of the most controversial actors in the industry for his outspoken nature told Saturday Beats that he was shocked when Nigerians tagged him as a homos#xual simply because a picture of him pecking a man surfaced online. He said that at a time, Nigerians called him a gigolo. Now, they are referring to him as gay simply because of a publicity stunt.

“I went to a store with a friend to pick up a wristwatch I had been paying for in instalments. My friend was taking pictures when I told him that we should cause trouble on social media with a picture of me pecking him. When I posted the picture, it went viral within 15 minutes. In fact, we were still in the store when the picture went viral. I was shocked that Nigerians would even conceive the idea that I am gay because I love women. Anybody can be gay and I mean no disrespect to them but as for me, the picture was just done for publicity stunt. I never knew it would go viral that fast.

“People call me a gigolo; how come I do not have money? I know a lot of people that are gigolos and they are doing fine. If they say I am an actor and gigolo, why would I have to sell a car in order to afford another car? What is wrong with me buying Versace and Ferragamo? Why would I be a gigolo and not dress like a posh boy? Why would I be wearing slippers everywhere I go? So why should I answer the people calling me a gigolo? I do not have to convince anyone; when I know that at the end of the day, I would not waste my time convincing you about anything. You can think about anything you like but I am not here to convince anyone.

    2. To survive and then thrive in Nollywood requires a spirit of PROSTITUTION. Do you know how many directors these actresses have to sleep with on an ongoing basis when they start out?!? A girl who wasn't a prostitute prior cannot survive in such an environment. Because they were prostitutes before they came into the industry, they only expand their customer base after they acquire fame through the industry. The decent actresses in Nollywood are very few: Joke Silva, Ego Boyo and Adesuwa Etomi-Wellington, I can't think of anyone else.

    3. AMEN TO THAT STATEMENT AFOLAYAN. I remember how Wunmi and Baba Suwe was arrested for drug trafficking. You can only imagine what they would have used the money for if the trip would have been successful. I'm sure that wasn't their first time because they both have been living a high lifestyles before they were arrested on that particular trip. Same applies to that Ghanaian socialite that was arrested in London with drug worth millions. She lives in over 1 million dollars house and Drive choice cars and she said she does government contract? Shows everything that shines is not diamond. There is more to someone that has not made just one million Naira to act in a movie but drives expensive cars and lives in over 250 million Naira house. #GOFIGURE

All of you should be your brothers keeper. Stop all these charade of madness on social. If you guys continue this way,I swear its just a matter of time before Yoruba film industry becomes a thing of the past

  6. Some invested in legit businesses, some were lucky or blessed during the oil boom and under Uncle Jona's administration. Some took advantage of the growing Ghanaian economy, took the risk and that too is paying off. He should not put all the actors in one box abeg. The wise ones did invest and for some it paid off.
Some had gifts too. Nevertheless I am not saying some blow out of proportion their financial sucesses on SM. Helas! That's what their fans (Nigerians) want to see, they love to be fooled.

  7. Who get this sub bring container to come and pack it. Look at him saying Nigerians believe things they see on social media because they don't know anything. Oga we know plenty, so if anybody posted that they just got something, either its gotten through legal or illegal means, should we carry cane and go beat them up? I guess he doesn't read SDK blog and he's not been seeing the little little yansh opening on the posts concerning celebs posting their self acclaimed 'God did it' properties. We know dude

  8. Not saying there are no artistes in Nollywood that use their Privates for gains. But I also know that people have side hustles too.
The fact that you don’t know about their financials or what comes in and out doesn't mean everyone trades sex for money.
Most of these houses they purchase are on Mortgage, some pay for as long as 15years.
Some also use their platform to sell their products effectively. The celeb hype around them makes it possible for them to sell out whatever they put their hands on.
Davido buys houses and planes and is hailed but Tiwa will do same and people will say she used her P.
How many times has Ramsey Noah advertised his side hustle for fans to patronise him? Emeka Ike?
But some of these ladies legit work day and night to make ends meet.
See Uriel cooking, selling wigs,Singing,Doing mini talk shows and when God blesses her tomorrow now Thin tall Tony will come and say its ritual money.
This is in no way saying there are no bad eggs there, both Male and Female.
Nigerian women including our mothers are hustlers. The legit hustlers deserve some accolades!

  12. He never called anyone a prostitutes or ritualist, in summary, he said movie making doesn't pay that much to afford all the luxuries they display on social media but they have side businesses becos some of them are lucky to know influential people who gives them contracts. The question is he didnt mention d nature of the business... assumptions are assumptions until confirmed
They re adults, they re free to seek legal & illegal means to live their life, they bear d consequences, good or bad!

  20. Bro, I feel your pain o jere. One would be trying to stay clear of illegal lifestyle and yet the income may not be encouraging. But I know it's slowly but surely. And it would be a lasting satisfaction with no sorrow.
Quite painful to see these yeye folks do all manner of nonsense and then be flaunting material things and tagging God alongside.
