The Shocking Switch...

Two men switched entire lives – including wives and kids – after one fateful barbecue.

To former Yankees pitchers Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson, it was a simple and sensible thing. To the country it was a scandal of epic proportions, the likes of which had never been seen before.

It started innocently enough on July 15, 1972.

New York Post sportswriter Maury Allen invited Fritz Peterson and his wife Marilyn over for a barbecue at his New Jersey home to talk about the Yankees. Peterson asked if he could bring along his friend, fellow Yankee Mike Kekich, and his wife Susanne. Of course, Allen said. The more the merrier.

“It just happened,” Peterson said, looking back. “It wasn’t planned.”

After the barbecue, the Petersons and the Kekiches decided to continue the evening and head over to the local Fort Lee Diner.

“When we were deciding to leave, we had driven two different cars and happened to park behind each other out in the street,” Peterson said. “I said to my wife, Marilyn, ‘Why don’t you ride with Mike to the diner in Fort Lee, N.J., and I’ll take Susanne with me and we’ll meet there and then we’ll go home from there.'”

“We did that and we had so much fun together, Susanne and I and Mike and Marilyn, that we decided, ‘Hey, this is fun, let’s do it again,’” he continued. “We did it the next night. We went out to the Steak and Ale in Fort Lee. Mike and Marilyn left early and Susanne and I stayed and had a few drinks and ate.”

Before long, the four realized that they wanted to spend more than just a few dinners with each other’s spouses.

“All of us felt the same way,” said Peterson. “We went on from there and eventually, he fell in love with my wife and I fell in love with his.’”

However, the situation presented with more issues than just the players and their wives. Both couples had children, and homes, and dogs to think about. They couldn’t just uproot each other’s lives. So, the players did what they thought was best – a “husband swap.”

Rather than force their wives to move, they decided to move instead. Almost overnight, they had switched not only wives but entire lives, poodle and terrier and all. Then, all that was left to do was tell the world about it.

Peterson first went to Maury Allen and asked him to write about it, hoping he “wouldn’t make it sound too dirty.” After all, as Peterson said, there was nothing “smutty” about it. It was simply what was best for everyone. Eventually, however, they decided to tell the public themselves in the hopes that it would clear the air.

In separate press conferences, the players discussed their unconventional arrangement and their hopes that the public would understand.

“Unless people know the full details, it could turn out to be a nasty type thing,” Kekich said in his conference. “Don’t say this was wife-swapping, because it wasn’t. We didn’t swap wives, we swapped lives.”

Whether the novelty of such a scandal died down, or the public found a more exciting one, the hype around Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson was soon over. For several years, both couples lived in relative quiet, assuming each other’s daily routines.

It seems that all these years later the backward fairytale the two couples lived in may finally have ended for one of them.

Fritz Peterson and Susanne Kekich married, and are still happily together today, but Mike Kekich and Marilyn Peterson have parted ways. The two players who were once roommates during road trips haven’t spoken in 10 years, possibly more.

While Peterson happily speaks about his interesting past, Kekich has not given an interview in several years, and is “panic-stricken” over the thought of the story being turned into a movie. Talk of a film has been circulating since 2011.

  4. Well I actually like the whites for th3 singular fact that they don't pretend and they are open to new ideas. In as much as I can't do the same, what they have is cool and challenging.

  6. There's already a movie with that storyline. It's quite old but I can't remember the title.
One wife was cheating with the neighbor. Her husband found out and cheated with the other's wife who also wanted to punish her husband. These were best friends o. Eventually, they started full affairs and talked over it. So they eventually married each other and never spoke to themselves again .
