Chairman of NPC, Mr Eze Duruiheoma, stated this in New York while delivering Nigeria’s statement on Sustainable Cities, Human Mobility and International Migration at the 51st Session of Commission on Population and Development.
Duruiheoma said: “Nigeria remains the most populous in Africa, the seventh globally with an estimated population of over 198 million. The recent World Population Prospects predicts that by 2050, Nigeria will become the third most populated country in the world. Over the last 50 years, the Nigeria’s urban population has grown at an average annual growth rate of more than 6.5 per cent without commensurate increase in social amenities and infrastructure.
It grew substantially from 17.3 in 1967 to 49.4 per cent in 2017. In addition, the 2014 World Urbanisation Prospects report, predicts that by 2050, most of the population – 70 per cent – will be residing in cities. The 2010 human mobility Survey report revealed that 23 per cent of the sampled population were of more females than males.

*I read somewhere years back that we were about 250 million!
198 million na wa ooo, we still plenty.
ReplyDeleteabi dem count people herdsmen kill?
Death rate is far lower than the birth rate, our problems are compounding & skyrocketting! with unemployment on the rise like an elevator to the roof of the empire state building, what else is there for the idle mind to engage in? either than fuck fuck like rugrats.
ReplyDeleteYepaaaaa... I wasn't counted ooo...how did the man arrive at that figure na? He should come and recount o.....it's obvious that I wasn't counted
ReplyDeleteLol! Just as you use sample to get your data in your final year project, they used sample and average growth rate of about 6.5 per cent to arrive at that number.
DeleteWe are due for another 'comprehensive' census though.
The worrisome thing is that the growth rate is not commensurate with increase in social amenities and infrastructure (recipe for disaster).
How do we get this nation(Nigeria) right?
Almost everything about us has k-leg and lefthand join.
Since we can't make good use of our massive population like developed countries do, I think we should make plans to reduce it for the sake of future generations.
ReplyDeleteThe current rate of unemployment, scarce resources, high cost of living e.t.c, can be attributed to our population growth.
Demand has surpassed supply by a long margin. Population control shouldn't be taken lightly.
Yes population control shouldn't be taken likely.
DeleteBefore I read through your submission, immediately I got to "...reduce it for the sake of future gen..." Dan Brown's Inferno flashed through my mind, Lol! I thought... Never mind.
But after reading through I had a better understanding of what you're talking about.
Good point!
