Emergency Room Series: Piercing Altercation

Sometimes, your faith in humanity is tested. 

I don't know why anyone would want to hurt a fellow human being with the intention of killing the person. It doesn't matter what the person has done, but for one to kill a human with flesh, blood and bones requires some other kind of bad powers.

That was the story of a man that was rushed to the ER with stab wounds on his neck and forehead. He was seriously bleeding and was losing consciousness. 

When he came in, he was holding a man tight at the collar and shouting that he needed help and that the man he was holding was the one who stabbed him. I don't know how he managed to hold on to the man despite how bad he was bleeding..I guess he held on so he won't run away. 

The man he held on to was trying to beg, break free and run but was held down by the hospital's security men and some strangers that came with the patient.

A man who claimed he saw what happened narrated the incident that led to it. 

He said the patient that was stabbed was trying to get fuel at a filling station close to the hospital. He said as soon as the man stepped out of his car, the stabber confronted him. He said people thought it was a robbery so they fled but the witness was trapped in his own car with his family because he was the next in line to buy fuel and was very close so he couldnt escape. He said the men were shouting at each other and talking about a lady that got pregnant and next thing they saw was the man was stabbed twice and there was blood everywhere. 

 When the witness saw what had happened, he ran out of his car and shouted for help(which was a brave thing to do) and people gathered and helped to put cloth on the wound for pressure.

The stab wounds were very deep, so deep that his carotid artery was traumatised( a big artery on the neck that supplies the brain with blood) and even broke his shoulder bone. The blood that was gushing from the neck was so much, it looked like when you just cut off a chicken or animal's head! 

There was also a stab wound on his forehead from which blood squirted with great force and stained the walls and a doctor's cloth. Despite being asked not to talk, he said the man he held on to must not escape and must pay for what he has done and that he didn't get the Stabber's wife pregnant as he thought and that he was innocent.

He had to be wheeled straight to the theatre and he was heavily transfused because he had lost a lot of blood. He was placed on oxygen. The doctors managed to stitch the carotid artery and the muscles around it. It was very hard work because they had to apply a lot of pressure on the artery and at the same time sew it. Not only was the man losing consciousness and blood, his brain wasn't getting enough oxygen which could make him forget a lot of things about his life or lose his memory if he survives it.

 Then his heart stopped. 

We began CPR while the doctors continued stitching. In fact his heart stopped four times. The head of the ER was furious with the stabber and blasted all of us that if the man doesn't survive, we might lose our jobs. He wanted the man alive so the stabber would face jail for life. Some doctors had to rush to a blood bank outside the hospital to buy more blood. 

One doctor even donated his blood. Every one was bringing up different ideas to make the bleeding stop. We used coagulants, icepacks, pressure, you name it. 

After about 4hours of intense work, the doctors were able to stitch the arteries and the bleeding stopped. You can imagine our relief. Nobody left the theatre for about an hour after we were done, so as to observe. Some police men came and took the stabber away. The witness followed them as well. 

I don't know what the patient could have done for him to be stabbed that way, whether he got another man's wife pregnant or not or maybe there was more to the story. While some of us can't kill a tiny spider, some can effectively pierce sharp things through another person's body and not feel bad about it. I'm just happy the man is quite stable now and happier that I got to keep my job.
