A Witness To Domestic Violence....

A victim of Domestic Violence and one who witnesses it happen both feel the impact of the punch......

I walked into the room and witnessed the big blow dealt to her, she fell with the impact and so did her little boy. I did not even want to know what happened, I acted fast, on impulse; this was my blood, this was my sister, I would never stand by and watch anyone beat her for whatever reason. I landed my own punch on his back. He wasn’t expecting it, before he would turn his back to know where it came from, I landed another.


I am not a fighter, I cannot even call to memory any fight with my siblings. My parents were that strict, taught us respect, and taught us never to throw a punch or even use any unedifying word. I grew up with moral values and would never be caught exchanging vile words with anyone in secret or public. I am aware that my siblings were raised like me. I am also aware that we are a very quiet people and this sister of mine was even the most gentle.


I had noticed cracks in their relationship the few times I have lived with them but this wife is one that takes all the insults and lets the ego of this husband win always. This was an Egoistic man and you only needed to spend five minutes with him to know this. He was eccentric through and through and this isn’t me trying to make him look bad, it was simply who we know him to be. But that he would ever descend so low is still a shock to me even after many days have passed.


A woman is never a match for a man, never and I am one of those who believe there would never be a justifiable reason to raise your hand on a woman, on any one at all for that matter. Its lack of self-control not to walk out of a toxic argument, this wife was doing so when husband ran after her and rammed in his fist.


When he turned around to face me, my other sibling walked him, she saw the slap on my face, ran and held his hands, I quickly held on to the other and we were able to pin him to the ground in no time. We dealt him blows and he beat us too, and we all had body pains by the next morning.



When he was calm and wanted to talk, I shut him up and gave him a piece of my mind, truth is things between us will change now, I would never see him as that man he once was. It would take a while before his already damaged image will be redeemed in the eyes of my family. I used words that made him feel shameful and really never let him explain his unacceptable temper. He is way older than me but I believe he respects my guts and intolerance for rubbish so this my outburst with him was really unexpected and shameful so he was tongue tied when I was done talking.

What if she hit her head on the floor and something else happened? God forbid!

What if something happened to the little boy that also fell down?

By the next morning, we had reported the case to elders from both families, his stubborn self was arrested, let out because he kept pleading and because we all didn’t think he should lose his job. He was left with the kids for a week while wifey was recuperating in a fancy place, he begged her for a long time with tears, he had to apologies to every member of my family, and was made to write an undertaking with serious implications should he ever raise his hand on her again. 

I have heard of domestic violence but to see it happen right in front of me is still a shock even after many days. I know I would hardly step my foot in that house again and I am glad they would be relocating to a country where it is not tolerated because I doubt the potency of his affidavit in this country.

*Domestic Violence happens everywhere my dear,even in a Country where the Law does not tolerate it.

The only difference is that in Nigeria,you dont get served,in other places,you pay for the act with Jail time.

Tell your sister to know when to run because once the first Blow is landed it might continue.....
