Mama Tee Series -Married Women Cutting Their Hair..

A married woman cutting her hair is a taboo?

I heard it's a taboo in some cultures for a married woman whose husband is still alive to chop off her hair.

I was in the salon last weekend when this fine young woman walked in. She wanted to weave her hair.

A look at the hair showed it had seen plenty suffering in the hands of its owner. The hairline had receded and almost started from the middle of her head.

Also, the hair at the back of her head was short and scanty like pubic hair while the one in the middle of the head looked a little longer.

I advised her to chop everything off and be on low-cut, then get hair treatments like castor oil to restore back her hair.

This lady shouted "God forbid!"

I was still looking at her in amazement when she continued that in her husband's place, it was a taboo for a married woman whose husband is still alive to chop off her hair. It means the woman wants her husband dead and he will fall sick and eventually die if some rituals were not performed on time.

I was gobsmacked.

I asked where her husband came from and she mentioned a state in the middle belt of Nigeria.

Anyone ever heard of this? I never hear this one before oh. What a tradition!

  1. There was a time I wanted to cut my hair, I just hinted it and my husband warned me not to try it. I asked why, he said he loves me with the hair and he hates seeing women on low cuts that I should not try it. I was just thinking in my mind that what if I had cut it like I planned to do on my previous visit to the salon without his knowledge

    6. A woman choosing to do what would make her hubby happy doesnt mean he is controlling her, Women stop taking this freedom thing to another level. Same way a guy might not keep beards because is wife doesnt like it. Marriage is compromise.

  3. At this rate she wouldn’t need to cut it as in few years time it will be full blown alopecia. Then I would wonder if her husband will be advised to take a new wife with head full of hair.
Following culture with common sense with a background of formal education is indeed the worse kind of ignorance

  11. Naija women and getting permission from their husbands to even pee! But them no dey remember to collect permission before them cheat or visit babalawo. I am referring to those who have not been expressly forbidden to cut their hair. If u want to cut your hair because of breakage, do so at d salon, treat it and braid. D man no go even know say u barb. But even if he does, tell him ur reason and offer to braid or wear wigs when u both go out. Okwu agwu.

    2. Were you too daft to read it's a cultural thing?? Will you be there to assist in paying whatever penalty results from his disobeying traditional norms, if it comes to that???
Have you bothered to think why such transition's in place...maybe to ensure there's no confusion /proper recognition of widows from others or something...
When'feminism' meets ignorance, idiocy is born.

    1. Give yourself some respect, you seem not to have an atom of dignity for yourself. Maybe that’s why your husband and people around you treat you like shit. Just try, even if it’s hard, stop allowing people walk all over you. I follow your comments most times and this is one more to show that your self esteem is low.

She reminds me of Cutiebee with her low self esteem. Imagine saying she was ugly when she cut her hair. You want to say between Secondary school and now, after all these years, you still look the same and if you go on low cut, you will still look ugly according to you. You need help.
