Iya Ibeji Series -Daddy's Song.

Going down memory lane.........

Growing up, my dad used to enjoy playing some of our native music, mostly on Saturday mornings. But as soon as he stepped out we will quickly change it to Bobby brown or the latest hip hop song at that time.

Dad would come without saying a word he will change it back to his record. (Na record plate those days)

At first he used to get angry and give us lectures but with time he just ignored us and kept changing.
Many years later, dad passed on. One day I was in a bus and heard somebody is playing one of dad's songs. (ohenhen, benin peeps should know him) The thing sweet my belly no be small, I even wanted to hug the person.

This was our song. Me that is usually shy I had to beg the guy from the back seat where I was to his front seat to share the song with me and he did.
The song became my favourite it was on redial, it brought sweet memories of those Saturday mornings.
One day my elder brother heard it on my phone and quickly deleted stuff from his phone to have space to download it. If you know Ohenhen songs they are usually long.

I was amazed, so my brother knows this song?

Those Saturday mornings them no born us to change my father record, na only this my brother gather that kind liver.
But because he was older popsie kinda respected him. And he even used to wonder why pospie loved those songs.

Now come see my brother loving those songs and even singing along.
I teased him that I was surprised he knew the lyrics and he said he was surprised too.

When our cousin called that he was coming from Benin we gave him money to buy best of Ohenhen, Victor Uwafio and all those songs my dad used to play. Even though we didn't like them then but we listen and now we are teaching our children the same songs and they are resisting but we'll just smile.

So is there something your parents thought you and you didn't like, but you do now and you are trying to get your children to like but them no send you?

  14. Myself and my junior brother use to refer to my stepfather as an educated illiterate just because of his fixation to Orlando Owohs music. Fast forward to 20yrs after, i had all of Orlando Owohs cassette then in my car, my kids keep grumbling every time i play them.
Then i realised that musical taste changes with age. Am sure my son will one day have cause to say this too
