Potatoes
Potatoes have a high water content, so after being stored in the freezer, you could be left with a mushy, soft potato. Potatoes are best kept in a cool, dry place. If you really want to freeze them, you should try cooking them first.
Fried foods
Foods that were fried will lose their crunchy taste if you put the leftovers in the freezer. The best advice is to eat all of your fried food in one go or fry the ones you can eat.
Eggs in their shell
You should never keep eggs that are still in their eggs in the freezer. The water content inside the egg expands when frozen, which can cause the outer shell to crack and be vulnerable to bacteria. If you want to freeze your eggs, always take them out of the shell, mix until well blended and put in the freezer.
Cooked rice and pasta
Freezing cooked rice and pasta is never a good idea. It becomes mushy flavourless. In the end, you will have no choice than to throw it away!
Raw fruits and veggies
Any vegetable or fruit that has a high water concentration, like cucumber, tomatoes, salad greens, and watermelon will not survive the freezer because the water inside quickly allows them to become mushy.
Dairy products
Dairy products should never be kept in the freezer because it forces the enzymes in dairy to separate. If you do not want your milk, yoghurt and cheese to become watery, do not put it in the freezer.

ReplyDeleteThanks Adeniyi.
ReplyDelete1.Potatoes...I dice raw, wash and store in airtight plastic bins before storing in the deep freezer.
Once taken out I soak in salty water and fry up, not cooked.
2.Vegetables...I slice, wash and store in plastic membranes. Once taken out it goes straight to the wok, fried a little with peppered oil and eaten.
Please, hope I'm in order.
I just removed my cooked rice from the freezer and it's not mushy
ReplyDeleteIt normally comes out watery and tasteless
DeleteAnon ,that's if you don't have power supply. If you do, your rice won't become mushy

ReplyDeleteFirstly most of these things you mentioned are not kept in the freezer,I don't agree with your write up,I dont think anyone will be stupid enough to keep potatoes in freezers,it's usually left spread in trays or basket.i keep my fried fish, meat, chicken and smoked turkey in the freezer and it doesn't get mushy,it gets iced yeah and once I pop them in the microwave, they become crunchy again, ice defrost, taste same but I noticed if I keep my meats in the fridge, the taste changes over time and I don't like meat, fish or chicken in my pot of stew,I prefer to separate them like have my stew in a large food container in the fridge.as for eggs, who keeps eggs in a freezer, abeg that one is not possible naa, even a daft person won't do that but I believe alot of people keep their eggs in the fridge, well i do,except for in winter when my fridge gets extra cold I keep them in a big bowl on the kitchen worktop.i keep my left over cooked rice and pasta in the fridge or freezer and it doesn't get mushy, once I put it in microwave it's as good as it was before.as for fruits and veggies, fruits usually are not kept in freezers naa,who does that???I keep salad in my fridge though,it keeps my salad which mixed veggies fresh.on to dairy products some dairy products are kept in the fridge at tesco, not freezer as regards to your writing,I wonder why you kept writing freezer,do you not know the difference between a fridge and a freezer ni?na question I ask oo,pls don't come under my comment to be rude and insultive cos you people are fond of that on this blog, let me come and be going my eyes is painning me.
ReplyDelete"Don't come under my comments" I laffted. Is it your blog?
Deletehahahahha come and use my glass. Better come and finish it for us
DeleteI got confused whether she meant fridge or freezer...

ReplyDeletepar-cooking the potatoes by boiling or frying allows you to freeze potatoes without discoloration or mushiness.

ReplyDelete@ Poster ! Hmmmmmmm... your write up!🙈 some are just common sense.
ReplyDeleteThe cooked rice or pasta should be place in a plastic freezer bag( sealable), and spread it out in the bag so it lays flat. Most importantly, it will thaw much more evenly later on. One will not be left with frozen grains or pasta in the middle of the food clump, while the outside is ready to eat. You can also write the day it was cooked on the bag.
Baked potatoes whole, and freeze the potatoes uncovered until they are solid about 1hr. Then wrap each one with aluminium foil and put then in a freezer bag. Mark the date on the bag before you place them in the freezer. And for cooked potatoes, this should be place on a baking sheet and when firmly frozen, transfer into a re-seable plastic freezer bag. Freezing them on baking sheet prevent them from sticking together (stops mushy).
When freezing vegetables (without high H20 concentration, first blanch them briefly in boiling water. Then quickly submerge the veggies in ice water to prevent them from cooking. Dry thoroughly on kitchen paper-lined trays or racks. Blanching prevents enzymes from damaging colour, flavour and nutrients and is a more effective way of washing them before freezing. Pack vegetables snugly to avoid air contact in a freezer bag and seal with tape.
I freeze seasonal fruits and veggies all the time.
