Mama Tee Series - Religious Houses and Noise Pollution

It's Wednesday and the time is 2:am, I'm awake, not because I want to but the noise from a nearby church would not let me sleep.

You see, while searching for accommodation, before I settle for any, I always check the surrounding structures for a church, mosque or bar/hotel where they play loud music. I also check the compound and see that the apartments are not many and there is no 'face-me-I-slap-you' building close to it.

Noise distracts me. I hate noise. My house is always quiet, the TV or Sound System is always tuned low when playing. Also, my child does not cry or make noise anyhow. I taught her that noise making is a bad habit.

Now this particular church is about four buildings away from mine, I saw it back then while house-hunting but I thought the distance and fences would not allow their activities to disturb me, I forgot that there was something called vigil in churches and that noise travel far in the midnight.

This church holds vigil up to 3 times in a week most times and they are not white garment oh. The most painful part is that they use these loudspeakers that ring like a bell in your head.
They also hold mid-week services almost everyday.

I'm a Christian, I believe in worship, prayers and all but I don't support disturbance of peace of others while practising these things. Noise in the name of church service between the hours of 12:am - 4:am is unacceptable. Why can't they do it without the speakers? Will it affect the efficacy of the prayers?

I gave kudos to the Lagos State government when I heard that they would start prosecuting religious houses, bars, barbers shop, etc with speakers outside disturbing with noise but unfortunately, typical of Nigerian laws, it's not working as I haven't heard of any prosecution to that effect. So, reporting them would be a waste of time.

A friend of mine in the UK told me that churches and other pubs over there have noise-proof walls, you won't hear a thing going on inside. If they make noise, they would be reported and penalised, Stella and other 'abroadians' is this true?

  1. You see it as noise but I actually enjoy the so called noises from pentecostal churches.

Sometimes i even sing along to their praise and worship songs. Then sometimes I even try to listen to the preaching if it's loud enough. Other times i just ignore but I never see it as noise

    1. We are the same. The next building to my house is a church, I enjoy it when they are having vigil, either I pray with them or sleep peacefully.

    2. Even in midnight too when one is supposed to be resting? Or it is by force to join them in their night vigil?

It's not right for them to disturb at midnight. Some of them have night vigils every week while some do it once a month. Why can't they pray at night without all the gbangbanjimjim?

    3. I hope you will still enjoy it when you have your babies or you have a demanding job.

  2. That noise is irritating
I think all the landlords in the community should be the one curbing them.

  3. Lagos State Government should look into this because they have this noiseless instrument they ask churches or mosque to buy and get.

  5. Don't just jump to conclusions when you haven't even made a report to the appropriate agencies, I reported a couple of these mosques and churches around my street and they were warned. They now tune their speakers down at night and during the week.

  6. When we were growing up there was a church five minutes walk away from our house but I and my siblings could sing all their songs and even knew the order of their service cos their horn speakers were facing the four corners of the earth and the volume was insanely high, you could hear them loud and clear both day and night. It was more annoying at night the noise was more amplified.
Churches shouldn't be dragging space with people in residential areas, they should find a neutral place where no one will be bothered about the sound coming from them or better still develop a city for themselves, that way they know it is their environment and in full control of the planning of the place
It's not like this abroad,it's only Africans that like plenty noise and throw moderation out through the window

  7. Hmmm. Mama tee,
I also wonder how the mosques over there in abroad do their call to prayers.
There are days I don't have to wake up early e.g weekends and public holidays but noise from the mosque on my street would not allow me to sleep beyond 5:am. They would start the noise by 5:am and the do call to prayer by 5:30am, from that time till 6:am they will be preaching, all with loudspeakers everyday. I'm just tired.

  8. That's how my husband wanted to pay for a house... Thanks to God I went there with him. I saw one big speaker directly at the window..

  9. Nawa o that is horrible. Pele my sister. But so many people thinks that going to church and praying all the times will solve their problems. I learnt in a hard way, use your common God given sense. It solves most of the problems.

    1. You are right dear. Some of them live in the church during working hours, they only get stipends from the pastor at the end of the day. Time they should use for productive activities, they use it in church.

Hahahahhaha...sorry. Getting a good house is worth celebrating.

Talking about churches in residential area....A guy staying close to a church was frustrated, he reported to the landlord who in turn told the church to keep their speakers inside, they refused. He said "ok, no problem". He got his own speakers and mounted it opposite the church speakers. During programs he'll be playing wordly music. The 'pasta' was now begging him to stop.

  15. Noise by churches in Nigeria is synonymous to the degree of spirituality. You complain of noise pollution here and the come for your head. The god of Nigerian religion is a noisy god.

  16. Lol! People believe God will not answer your prayers until you disturb others...

  17. Mama tee or whatever, are you a witch? Why is church prayers disturbing you? Gerrarahia menn!

  18. I cannot express how much this really irks me.

Is God deaf? Or isn't prayer talking to God anymore?
Why do you people want me to hear your prayer points?

It's the Holy Spirit who rearranges our prayer, that's what the Bible says.
All the screaming, shouting and Jumping isn't gonna help.

Hannah was childless and was constantly mocked for it, yet Eli passed by and only saw her mouth moving, if it was these days I am sure he wouldn't need to ask her if she was drunk....
Jesus was going to die for a race that wouldn't appreciate and was in pain, yet when he prayed, the disciples still found it serene to sleep off.

Some people have attended prayer programmes and come back with more problems (physical and spiritual) than they went in with.
Their enemies never die, it's new enemies per church programme. The devil and his vices are called out more than the name that is above all names...

Stop the noise please and stop re-enacting the prophets of Baal over and over again.

My church is in Lagos and it's heavily sound proofed.
You can report them to the relevant authorities if they disturb you.

  22. Abroad people is it true that you don't hear any noise from churches? Also, how do the mosques manage with their 5times prayers everyday? Is that how they chant Allah akbar over there too?

    1. It's not true, u hear the same noise well. In most cases churches here are in the industrial areas so no problem if u make noise

    2. Please which "abroad" are you in oh? I live in Canada and religious houses are mandated to soundproof their buildings...infact within the church premises you won't hear anythn except ure in the auditorium. I used to attend RCCG, good shepherd's pasture in alagomeji yaba and it is also sound proof...its doable in naija but some of the churches arent willing

  24. If they don't shout how will they get more members? Or you don't know that its a form of advert. Churches are places of business too so they need patronage.

    1. They can go for evangelism to get more members.

You may be right though. Some people would hear their fire prayers and 'war' songs and chart attending. This translates to more offerings, donations and tithes

    3. The one beside my house is seriously fighting with the devil on a daily, imagine a man of God constantly exaulting the devil by always shouting about him, av never seen him glorify God by saying that he is great, it's always about asking the members to pray for the downfall of Satan. This man comes everyday by 5am pray and shout about the devil, repeats same thing by 5.30pm,then to my surprise they still held vigil by 10pm yesterday night. With their speakers so loud and him singing with his croaky frog voice. Mehn... I weak. I for one I'm a born again, spirit filled, but I know beta than always fighting the devil, when my 10mins of praises to God makes my way straight and open, mtscheeew

  26. Choi! Mama tee, you no hate noise reach me. The older i become the worse it gets. Ive always lived in houses where we live alone, gate shut and all so when i moved to my granny's house in my 100L and her house was open to all neighbours (you know these old compounds) Jesu! One Saturday afternoon I was trying to sleep children came to watch granny's tv as neighbours used to send children to her house when they want to rest. I called my dad crying that day that if he doesn't allow me rent house I will drop out of school. My guy know say matter don pass garri 🤣🤣 Then student lodge and loud music na 5 n 6. Thankfully, my boyfriend then used to stay in family house. I made do with that until the relationship ended. By that time, I was able to stay in houses that students don't usually stay, if they do mature students like married women or grad students.

The other day my younger sister asked me how I intend to stay in a house with my children and my no noise policy. I told her my children will learn early to not be cranky around me. Maybe if their papa get strength dey can act spoilt around him. My dad's voice is very loud when he starts na me dey caution am, he will say 'sorry madam I didn't know you were around' 🤣 when he's watching ball I don't bother cos that one he MUST shout. He can say sorry 100 times but by the next kick he will still shout

There was a big church in gbagada phase 2 then, near charly boy. Govt closed it down. The residents fought until it was closed down. Plenty vigil!! And like you said noise travels faster at night..before the govt succeeded pastor would be praying and saying that they should pray against any policy that wants to close their church down thst its the devils work etc Story! They so gave them the exit. I think they sold the property and re-allocated funds.

Last last na town planning wey we no get. Some areas should be for religious establishments or not resident some KM radius around a church. Nna wetin dey happen for the abroad. Strict laws! Let me not forget one mosque near our house that time on the mainland. I NEVER saw the mosque but I knew there was a mosque around cos my 5am na so them go start! Aaaaaallaaaahhkubaaa. I didn't need an alarm in that house 🤣 Okay, wey d mosque? I no dey see am. Sure it will be one tiny building in one small corner disturbing our peace

    1. Chikito you are right. You will be the one to train your kids not to be noisy. I trained mine so well that you won't even know there is a kid in the house until I raise my voice and caution her on something she is doing or playing with.
I once shared in one of my posts back then on ihn about my neighbour whose young kids cry day and night, the youngest is almost 3yrs old. They would want water, it's cry that they would use to tell their mum. She spoilt them and allowed them to become like that.
So it depends on the parents.

I see kids when I take mine out for functions, some would sit down and behave themselves in public while others would misbehave, cry and hit their mum if she cautions them.

  27. I tell you Olivia. There is even one that goes around with a speaker preaching in the morning around 5:am. That one is even manageable because most people would be awake already by that time, mothers prepping kids for school and people who work very far.
Like you said, if all other religious groups mount speakers and shout every Friday from 12midnight, what would it look like?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Churches in the abroad are not keeping night vigils. I have never been disturbed by any place of worship here. I too hate excessive noise at weird hours of the night and especially during the work week. These ppl are just inconsiderate, but think it is acceptable because Jesus is involved. While Jesus was out in the forest teaching his followers far away from disturbing others, these loonies could not be bothered to walk in his footsteps in like manner, they prefer to disturb people who have to go to work in the morning and children who need to go to school, all in the name in worshiping God who already lives in them. All their screaming and shouting to what they already have within them which is the kingdom of God. How will they hear the still small voice of God in all that noise?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hmmmmmmm
Preach in the forest and mountains like Jesus, they can never try it, instead they will be driving in bulletproof cars and living in mansions while disturbing the neighbourhood with noise
