Nigerian Gospel artiste and Instagram comedian, Ayo Ajewole popularly known as Woli Agba, in a recent chat with Punch recounted his marriage journey with his wife, Olaife.
At what age did you plan getting married initially?
While growing up, I had always believed that I would get married at the age of 30 at most but I ended up getting married later than that age.
What delayed the plan?
Money basically because you have to be sure of your income before venturing into marriage but in all, I give thanks to God because everything worked out fine. We may make plans but God has the final say.
When did you eventually tie the knot?
I got married in April 2017.
How did you meet your wife?
I met her at a programme I was invited to in Kogi State. While the crowd was trying to take pictures with me, I just sighted this beautiful lady standing at a corner looking at me. I walked up to her and immediately told her that she was my wife but she began to laugh. I told her I was serious and that I was speaking as a prophet but she kept on laughing and told me that I was just too funny and playful. While I was saying that, my mind kept telling me that she probably was in a relationship with someone else but I did not care. I got her number and here we are today.
At what point did she begin to take you seriously?
Thank God for the midnight call promotion during that time. I called her during one midnight and she said, ‘Woli, so you also do extra-cool.’ But I told her that it was love that caused it; when it comes to love, you can do anything. After I said this, she was ready to listen to me. Then she asked if I was serious about my statement and I told her yes. She asked what made me so sure and I told her that as I knew a man of God, I was talking with authority. Besides, the Bible tells me that immediately Adam saw Eve, he recognised Eve and named her woman which means a man taken out of me and has a womb. I said that it was the same process. In fact, before I got to the venue of the event, something told me that I would meet somebody that would never leave my life.
How long did the courtship last?
It lasted for about four years.
How did you propose to your wife?
For me, I was always doing something for her every month just to let her know that I was serious because it took her time to be sure that I really wanted her. Sometimes I had to ask my celebrity friends to call her and let her know that I loved her. After about a year of our relationship, I packaged something and proposed to her properly. But I would say that it was from the first month we got together that I started proposing to her. My wife is so beautiful and I did not want to lose her, so I did not wait till I was ready to marry before proposing to her. After a month, I started the proposal process.
Did you face any challenge during your courtship?
We did not really face any challenge especially because I have a very positive outlook at any situation that confronts me. What I thought could have been a challenge was her father’s disposition to our union. She is the only daughter of her father and he loves her a lot, so I thought that would have been a hurdle to cross but God went before me and prepared the way. I had even seen her father in my dream before I met with him in real life. In fact, it was her father that instructed her to bring the man in her life home and that was how I met my father-in-law.
When you were at the altar during the wedding, what went through your mind?
There were a lot of things that went through my mind. On that day, I shed tears of joy. Looking at the crowd that came for my wedding alone was quite overwhelming. I felt that I had been anchoring weddings for a long while and finally it was my turn for someone to anchor mine. I looked into my wife’s eyes and I said to myself this is the beautiful woman that I would spend the rest of my life with. I knew that I meant it when I said she was my wife the first day I met her but the mere fact that it was becoming a reality made me very joyous. Another thing that went through my mind was how I would settle in my home. I was very happy on that day.
Blah, blah, blah. The wife looks like his aunt or elder sister. There is nothing sweet about their story.
