The eldest son of former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro killed himself Thursday after being treated for depression, according to Cuban-state run media.
Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, also known as"Fidelito," committed suicide after months of battling depression, Cuba Debate reported. He had a stark resemblance to his father, Fidel Castro, who died on Nov. 26, 2016 at age 90. Raul Castro, his brother, took over the regime after his death. The 68-year-old Castro Diaz-Balart was initially hospitalized for depression and continued his treatment after he was released.
He served as scientific adviser to the Council of State and vice president of the Academy of Sciences in Cuba, according to Cuba Debate. Castro Diaz-Balart studied nuclear physics in the Soviet Union and served as the head of Cuba's Nuclear Energy Commission from 1980 to 1992, according to Reuters. He's the cousin of Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) because of his mother Mirta Diaz-Balart.
