Lagos Govt. Moves Against Celebrity Tax Defaulters+ LIRS Comes For Singer Davido Over 30Bn Concert Tax

The Lagos State Government has begun moves to tackle high-profile tax defaulters in the state and ensure high level of compliance with its tax laws.

As part of this initiative, the state government has moved against some celebrities in the state, who are alleged to be tax evaders despite their earnings from their business. A court paper, on Saturday, indicated that the state government had dragged sensational singer, David Adedeji Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, before the court for alleged tax evasion.

A reliable source in the government, also noted that the state had equally moved against popular comedian, Ayo Makun, better known as AY, for allegedly failing to pay tax. Both artistes have had a long standing battle with the Lagos Internal Revenue Service for tax evasion.

Davido, who has record deals with Sony Music Entertainment and endorsement agreements with various companies in Nigeria, has not filed his tax returns or remit any taxes to the Lagos State Government. Davido had defended his action, claiming that he paid taxes to Osun State since he is an indigene of the state. AY too said the same thing. The comedian claimed to be paying his taxes to Ondo State, where he hails from. It seems these celebrities don’t understand that the tax law stipulates that you must pay your tax to your state of residence.

The source added, “Remember that Davido said he made N500m from his N30bn concert recently. We must know how much he paid to the LIRS. Anyway, we are already in court. Others will soon appear in court if they don’t obey the state tax law. You can’t be making money in Lagos and refuse to pay tax.

  3. Well the benefits of paying tax has not been interpreted nor implemented by any government in Nigeria. No good roads, electricity, water, health etc. So why should one pay tax? Government never created an enabling environment for business in Nigeria yet they want to receive taxes. I operate a business and everyday I spend a lot of money on fuel for my generator, someone somewhere will expect me to dash him my hard earned money for tax. Oshisco!!

  14. Good post, now I can rant very well, please ask lirs were all the money is going to oooo, cos even staff welfare is zero, they have been owing staff allowance since last year, staff welfare is zero, even this last Xmas, no single msg was sent to staff to wish them a merry Xmas, to appreciate them for all their efforts for the year. Not to talk of Xmas bonus. Common cup off rice, the management couldn't give their staff, and we generate over 25billion monthly. I repeat staff welfare is zero. management don't care for their staff, they spend money sponsoring celebrity shows, and the likes, nothing less than four staff died within the last two months, may God rest their souls, and management didn't even act like anything happened, perhaps if staff welfare was top priority in their minds.... Imagine a director saying without any iota of shame, that they are here to make money... No iota of shame at all, please help us beg them to pay the allowance they are owing us oooo, as little as it is, it will go a long way to take care of our basic needs, while we continue to pray that God touches the heart of the management to treat lirs staff right. And God guide and keep all of us in lirs. We shall not die untimely in Jesus name. And may the souls of the departed rest in peace. Amen
