Mama Tee Series -The Bride Price That Chases Suitors Away

Two of my cousins have vowed never to get married to a man from the same State as them because of high bride price.

You may wonder why they should be bothered about the bride price since they are not men. Well, they said they don't want their daughters to experience what they are experiencing presently; men run away after seeing the marriage list. Lols.

I was chatting with them the other day, they told me their parents want them to come to the village for Christmas maybe they would get suitors but they blatantly refused, saying they don't want to marry from their place because of high charges for traditional marriage.

Frankly speaking, I notice that many ladies these days get pregnant and move in with a man without the man doing anything to legalise the union.

Let's take a look at the list briefly: The dowry is fixed at N200,000 for a graduate including Masters degree holder, OND and NCE is N100,000, SSCE holder is N50,000. Lols. This does not include other monies like father's money, mother's money, grandparent's owni, village youths and village elders money which ranges from N50,000 to N40,000.

Then the items which fills about three pages of A4 paper includes bicycle for the bride's mum which has been upgraded to a motorcycle (lols), tubers of yam, a large female goat, baskets of dried pepper, kegs of palm wine and ogogoro, kegs of palm oil, boxes of clothes for bride, her dad and mum, large basins, pots and mortar. The list is very loooong, it runs into over a milion naira if you add everything together. Hahahahahahahaha.

I heard that some people have been mobilising for all the young ladies to organise a protest and march to the Paramount head's palace. They would demand for a reduction in the marriage rites items and cash including dowry.

So my people, how una see this marriage rites requirements? How would you rate the one they charge in your place?

  1. Bride price in my place can be as low as #50. Those accompanying charges are the real deal.

  5. This bride price and list thing depends on families to me,they should be considerate, and the bride should be able to talk to her people about it before the marriage cos some of the lists can be so outrageous.

    2. I am from ngwa. It depends on the family. All those extreme list are gradually reducing. If your babe is from an educated background they would know how to handle it.

  19. I think this brideprice issue is based on the family you come from. An educated family wont ask for much. Its only the family that have seen serious poverty that will be demanding ridiculous items. As per, they have seen a cash cow that will quench their poverty away.
