DeleteIt would take a lot of time cos you have to start from the scratch. First, make the child understand in as much as she has this set back, you trust her to overcome. It's best you teach her in phonics rather than letters. She will learn it much more easier that way.

DeleteThere are children who are naturally slow, what their mates have picked up when they are 5, this category of children would pick up when they are 10...
Sometimes, this snail speed of the child could be as a result of something traumatic the child has experienced or the child is experiencing
Other times, the child must have just been born that way
Other times, the child is just very lazy and doesn't want to put efforts because maybe the child is overly pampered or not...
In any of the scenarios listed up, it's not impossible for that child to learn...
If the child has suffered from a certain trauma, it's your duty to God as the teacher to be that child's best friend, make that child open up to you about his or her pains... If it's an abusive situation, make it a duty to save that child from the situation... Make the child want to talk, and trust me, that child will talk and be happy to learn
If that child is born naturally that way, you have to make learning interactive... Very interactive... Diagrams, songs should suffice... Children like these things a lot and hardly forget anything taught to them with a song or pictures
If that child is lazy, task that child and keep a 'prize' as motivation for that child...
Simply start by teaching her the alphabets.
DeleteThen the sounds of the alphabets.
Thereafter, you move in to spelling two letter words and three letter words.
Above all, always lay hands on her and pray for wisdom and the spirit of excellence upon her.
I am talking from experience. I had the same challenge with a child when I was still teaching but today, she is the best in English Language.
Find out if she at least knows how to read her alphabet and if she can do that perfectly, then start by teaching her to pronounce two letter words, from there to three. Take it slowly, don't rush her

Give her little daily assignment.
Don't forget to encourage her from time to time and if it's possible promise to get her little gift you can easily afford if you notice any improvement.

Please try using flash cards to teach her. she may have to be demoted from all indications though. queen primer is a good teaching tool too. start with two letter words and then progress. It takes patience but you seem to have it anyway. rewards help too. if she's lazy abeg flog her small...lol. I learnt to read at age 2. My parents brag about it all the time...they were both teachers, who attended teachers' training colleges.

so i started mentioning names of men and the places we met for the different dates, all in quick successions...and i was amazed that she actually remembered me after the mentions...
Problem is Babe is married now and those names were actually her sugar daddies parole, and unfortunately her husband was listening in...
