All Saints' Day is a solemn holy day of the Catholic Church celebrated annually on November 1.
The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven. It should not be confused with All Souls' Day, which is observed on November 2, and is dedicated to those who have died and not yet reached heaven.
Although millions, or even billions of people may already be saints, All Saints' Day observances tend to focus on known saints --that is those recognized in the canon of the saints by the Catholic Church.
All Saints' Day is also commemorated by members of the Eastern Orthodox Church as well as some protestant churches, such as Anglican, Lutheran and Anglican churches.
Generally, All Saints' Day is a Catholic Holy Day of Obligation, meaning all Catholics are required to attend Mass on that day, unless they have an excellent excuse, such as serious illness.
All Saints' Day was formally started by Pope Boniface IV, who consecrated the Pantheon at Rome to the Virgin Mary and all the Martyrs on May 13 in 609 AD. Boniface IV also established All Souls' Day, which follows All Saints. The holy day was eventually established on November 1 by Pope Gregory III in the mid-eighth century as a day dedicated to the saints and their relics. The May 13 celebration was subsequently abandoned. Halloween is a secular holiday that comes the night before All Saints' Day.

ReplyDeleteAll Saints day.. "a day dedicated to the Saints of the Catholic Church who have made heaven"
ReplyDeleteI can never understand and align with the Catholic faith. A faith which has accorded themselves the position of God Almighty on earth and awarded members of their church automatic entry to heaven right here on earth. The Pope, Bishop and priests see them selves as God who forgive sins, name someone a saint and give free pass to heaven. They think they are now God in their fickle minds SMH.
If Catholic is the only real faith in Christianity, I prefer to worship goats and cow dungs till eternity.
Such level of religious mumugiosity and polytheism. And unfortunately they consist of majority of the Christian faith and are quick to chant "Catholic and proud" Double SMH
Calm down oga. If you're truly a Christian you'd know there's too much negative energy that you don't need as a Christian in this your comment.
DeleteYou don't agree with the beliefs then look the other way. Don't be too bitter

ReplyDeleteThe All Souls Day is quite scary in my villa, because we light candles on every grave site, you'll just realize that some places(especially shortcuts) you've been passing before now are actually burial sites (most are without visible markers).
From afar or from a balcony the sea of candlelight is quite beautiful though (at night).
@ Mr Nobody through to your name you are not noticed so argue with yourself
