Mrs. Angela Inyang, the mother of a 16-year-old student, David Inyang, who was electrocuted last Monday in Calabar, Cross River State, has asked the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company to pay her a compensation of N10m.
David Inyang, a 100-Level student of Cross River University of Technology, died after he stepped on a high tension cable at No. 14, Adak Uko Street, in Calabar-South axis of the Cross River State capital.
The devastated mother of two, called on Governor Ben Ayade to intervene in the matter. She said, “I have lost my only son — the light of my world — to that disaster. I did not come out of the apartment with anything apart from the wrapper I tied. We lost everything. I have been managing to train my two children, Cherry and David, since their father died in 2009 and now my only son is gone. I am devastated and I do not even know where to pick up the pieces of my life.
I am appealing to Governor Ben Ayade to intervene. He should help me and my only surviving daughter. I am just a primary school teacher, everything I have is gone. The Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mr. John Gaul-Lebo, should also assist me. I am helpless.”
The family lawyer, who is the godfather of the deceased, said David’s life was abruptly terminated by obsolete and loosely knit high tension cables which fell on their two-bedroom accommodation at 14, Adak Uko Street.
Essien, however, noted that no amount of money was worth David’s life. We strongly demand and call for an enduring financial reparation to the tune of N10m from PHED.
When contacted, the Manager, Corporate Communications, PHED, Mr. John Onyi, said there was no cause for alarm as the company was on top of the situation.
