So sorry about Zelda TGW , don't lie and don't use euphemisms if your children are old enough to understand that death is permanent. I was lied to about the death of one pet and it was extremely confusing.
DeleteMy mother once told me my dog had run away, when she had really given it away because it had become too much work for her. I worried about that dog for months!
Children don't like to be lied to and especially to find out after the fact. Expect your child to be upset and be glad of that because having a pet is one of the first ways they learn empathy. Get straight to the point, allow them to see your sadness but don't go overboard with it, comfort them but allow them to grieve. Don't dwell on it too much.....
