Chronicle Of Blog Visitor Narrative....

WOW!!!

STAND ALONE NARRATIVE
A STORY TO LEARN FROM.....

The aim of the story is to make others who have a maid in their homes to think of the future of the maid. Thank you.

I'm from a remote village in Cross River state. Where no one can speak English at the time I left home, Its better now.

After my primary school education (which if you asked me is as good as not going to school) a lady came to my village and met my mum whom she thought was my sister because my mum was quite young, you won't know she is my mother, She told her she needed a young girl to stay with her brother's wife in Lagos.

I was leaving with my grandmother, I can remember the day I left village, me and my grandma were walking and she was advising me and we were both crying because I love her so so much ( I stayed with her since I was a baby) because I couldn't imagine life without her and vice versa.

On getting to Lagos, I was taking to this slim lady's house. The woman who brought me was talking to the woman, and I was just there, waiting for my real madam to come( I have this concept in my brain that madam is supposed to be fat and big). Only for the lady to greet me and I was told that will be my madam. That was how my 18 years stay in the house began, I was 11 years then.

Her husband is a strick military man so was not always around. Once he comes, everyone behave!!

She has 5 kids and the youngest was my mate. It's wasn't easy because having young people who wants to rule over you when the parents were not around wasn't easy. And seen someone who is your mate talked down on you or send you unnecessary message or beat you but because of who you are you can't beat back or talk back wasn't funny. But I kept my cool.

I wasn't being paid salary like they do now. My mum said she didn't want salary that they should just train me in what ever way. There was not really an agreement on what, when or how I should stay or be trained.

About 2 years after my stay, remember I couldn't speak or write English when I came so the teasing wasn't funny. At home, in church, outing and all. I'm always very embarrassed when they asked me to read Bible in children class in church and I will just be looking. At a point I stopped going to children class.
But I was doing something, the last born was my best friend although we fight alot, I will be doing spelling class with her.

After 2 yrs, my boss enrolled me in a primary school lesson. I can remember first at the lesson, the only thing I could read on the text book was (I am). So I was put in primary one class with kids of 4-5 years. I didn't want to go because of the embarrassment but my madam told me I most.

I was promoted every 4 month. And funny enough I was smart, I catch up and with my age, I was doing well. I stayed at that lesson for 1year. I stopped going because they folded up. After the lesson, she enrolled me in a fashion school, I went there for 2years and she bought me a sewing machine.these was in 2004.
Something happened around 2014.she is a pharmacist, she has a shop and the person who was there started stealing so she chased him away and there was no one at the shop. I told her I will be going.remember I only did primary school lesson, I still couldn't read big words.

She said OK, so me and the last born started going to the shop. I wrote down all the names of the drugs in a book, once someone comes I will go through the book look for there the drugs is. She saw my delegation and devotion at the shop and was impressed. I was enrolled again to a lesson for secondary school, I spent 1 year 3 month at the lesson and wrote junior waec, when I passed, Air Force gave me admission so I started SS1-SS3 with air Force secondary school.
I was still going to the shop. I was doing house work, shop work and school work together and none suffered.from school, I go to the shop, closed 8 and go home. The shop is in air Force Base and my house was at Omole phase 2.

I was really good in school.i passed my WAEC,NECO and JAMB in one seating and she agreed to sponsor my university education. I got admission the same year I finished secondary school. The first time I entered plane was when I was resuming school. And all these was sponsored by the woman, not the husband.it was when I got admission the husband volunteer to be giving me feeding money while the wife paid for every other thing.

I graduated in 2014 with my mate, served in 2015-2016.And have been working since November 2016.

All of her kids are married now, I'm like a member of the family. If you didn't know me when I came, you will think I'm a member of the family.

In 2009 when I was writing my WAEC, I brought my younger sister to stay because I was going to leave for university, she just finished her secondary school this year and I'm planning for her university next year. And in all this, this family never met my parents or know where my village is.

It wasn't smooth, it wasn't fun always, it wasn't sweet always. But what kept me was the fact that I wanted to be something in life. There were days I cried, there days I felt I couldn't take it anymore. But I kept going.
There was no kind of work they asked me to do, that I didn't do with Joy. Looking back, I know that patients pays.

And on my madam part, she saw a future in me, she wasn't rich, profit from the shop won't be more than 200k but she was willing to help another person's child to become something in life.

There days I annoyed her, make her think my own is too much self, but she was set in blessing a life.

I can boldly say that the generation after me will never be poor by God's grace and hard work on my part. Thank you.

  1. May God bless that lady and her family. I was expecting something terrible to happen but it didn't. God will bless you more than your heart desires for your zeal and persistence. Many had same opportunity as you but weren't patient and they lost a great future of possibilities.
I know a couple of people who made good of a bad situation. All the best dear.

My dear, God bless her o, Cus it's not easy and my dear your type is also rare in finding these days, I trained a help of mine in sewing school bought her a machine Cus she wanted to help her mum but somewhere along the line she met a man who took her back to village to farm for him in the name of marriage, another which I loved so much fell for a security man upon how I fought the guy for deceiving her Cus she was young, she still chose to follow him, I cried the day she left in my room so I say to you dear poster, your type is hard to find these days, they are now moved by men and marriage to the point that they forget what they want. Now she calls me and I help when I can Cus she has a son now but it's not easy

    2. Abeg poster do you have a younger sister like you? I'm a good and responsible woman. I stay in Lagos so you can even be checking up on her. I need a help. Comment under my post and I will give you my contact through Stella.

    3. You had big dreams that is what made you persevere. 'Perseverance breeds success' lol I also went to Airforce sec school.
Basically what I'm saying is many people have good intentions for their maids but unfortunately they keep getting unserious rude people who only want to end up selling fish. It always takes a willing young help and a willing guardian.

  6. Wao! Where there's a will, there's always a way. You are indeed fortunate, a lot of other maids are not.

I hope someone is reading this and learning. How people maltreat their housemaids still beats me. Not like this poster was a saint, but the woman probably overlooked a lot of things, but some will not. They will yell and talk her down, even flog. And they will be expecting her to treat their kids well in their absence, joker! They will claim afterall she's being paid, wicked souls!.

If anyone can easily spot your househelp cos of the way she's dressed or something else, you are maltreating her. So many oth pointers, I can't type.

Congrats poster, pls help others as well.

  15. A lot of people; even in this blog are probably guilty of this "salary" of a thing. With the maltreatment involved from the "madam", the girl won't mind "opening hole" for the husband even if he did not make a move. All to spite the "wicked madam"
    It is simply put; "wisdom" to treat a girl well, when you know you will trust her with;
    Your kids
    Your husband
The food everyone eats in the house
    Even yourself

Just treat her well, it is not costly. To do otherwise is most costly.

This is someone she met her and her mother in the market (her "customer") where they sell foodstuffs some yrs back and she felt bad she wasn't going to school at her age and arranged wt the mom and took her in. Started school for her immediately in their staff school as she's a lecturer and has been treating her fine to d best of my knowledge. 4yrs dwn the road ds girl decides she wants to leave cuz she's bored most of the time and doesn't have freedom to do anything or go out once shes back from school. Now I heard she's back to her mothers shop n no more school for her but she claims it's better for her as she's freer at home.

  28. My dad traveled to the village last week and came back on Sunday then he told my mom about one boy of 11yrs that lost his parents and people has taken is other siblings so it's remaining him... I was there felling bad for the little boy was already thinking about a private primary school in the area the boy can attend the next thing I heard my mom say '' please bring the boy I need someone to be helping me clean the compound and the house then my dad too said his own I also need someone that will help me wash my car'' at this moment I was speechless so I just said daddy we will just look for a private primary school around the area for him, my dad said for what he will go to the government school at the junction, note this govt school doesn't even have chairs in their class room and they mostly teach the children in Yoruba... I couldn't say anything because if I talk too much they will remind me that I'm a graduate and I'm jobless so I just respected myself and left went to meet my younger sister and I told her what they said, then we both talked to my mom that if it's public school that you did not send your children too you now want to send an orphan too. I said then leave the boy where he his because I'm sure he attend a public in the village so you are not helping him in anyway you only want to use him...
But I wish I can afford it I will gladly send the little boy to a private school. But I know God his blessing me already.

My niece is 15,been with me for 4years,she's in pri6,can't read whatever she writes in her notes,I have tried so much!!!!!has 3full bags of clothes but I have to beg her to wash in d machine, make sure she spreads,if I'm not up to wake her up....lailai,still steals from the pot of soup, leaving the kids with her to go out is wahala, most times I come back fr the markets to come wash dishes, but I'm not giving up because her mom lived with my mum and left at ss3 got married immediately after and lives in d village, won't that be the same cycle if I give up?its not easy but I'm sure she will know I tried once she grows up and understand.

I brought a 12yr old in 2015,she will be 15 in Jan,to help with washing plates and some little errands. My husband is wealthy but i do everything for her, from clothes, school fee, toiletries. In the morning when we wake up my husband work is to bath the boys and dress them for school while I make breakfast and lunch and I feed them when they are dressed. My helps work is to wash plate and sweep parlor and mop it,then get ready for school and eat breakfast.she closes by 12 .When she gets back home she eats, rest and wash plates in the evening. But my help has been insisting on going home I.e our village, simply because I don't allow her visit her friends,I don't allow her go to the neighborhood, and that the work is too much in my house,i cook my food and wash my childrens clothes amd mine too because if you give her to wash you will end up getting angry because she will spoil the clothes, sometimes with stains that yoi cant wash off and also she is bored.I called and told the father and he said he doesn't want her back that I should train her, meanwhile she is insisting she wants to go,she does things to get back at me,when she sweeps she pushed the dirt's under the chairs just to annoy me.I am so tired with her latest attitude I will just take her home and tell her father I don't need his dash.if only she will behave herself I am ready to train her to any level and teach her skill(I bake) but when I call her to come and help when I bake she will be frowning her face. I do everything for her cos she is the only girl I have,I have 3 biological sons, but her quest for freedom will make her regret later.I will take her home to her parents but will still be paying her school fees while the parents provide her basic needs.my dear poster you are one out of a thousand, don't forget this woman, take your time to pray for her and find time buy and expensive lace material take it to her and appreciate her.Tell her to bless you again and ask her to pray for you to get a good man to marry as she is now your mother. She will be so happy.God bless you.

I wake up before she wakes up but will still be late for school because she will be doing her things slowly.
