Cristina Mastro, of Shrewsbury, said her 4-year-old son found the shell on Wednesday on Corporation Beach in West Dennis.
“Matt my beautiful boy. You are missed and loved always. 7-7-17 Cape Cod. Mom” is written on the inside of the shell.
Mastro said it gave her instant goose bumps.
“I wish this lady could know her son had fun on the beach with our kids today,” Mastro wrote.
She posted a picture of the shell on Facebook with a request to share the post in hopes that the mom will see her heartfelt message. As of Friday, the post has been shared nearly 30,000 times.
“We did set it back out to sea. We knew this shell's journey wasn't over yet!” Mastro wrote.
Mastro's daughter, Mia, said she's happy her family found the shell.
"I am very happy we set it free so his memory can keep moving on," Mia said.
