Hubby is a short and informal name for husband, not Hussy! Hussy means a wayward woman!

ReplyDeleteWho dey use hussy b4?
ReplyDeleteHussy? Maybe is their pronunciation, I have never seen anyone using Hussy instead of hubby.
ReplyDeleteHussy is a term of endearment in broken English. It is used as the colloquial version of Hubby. Just like most slang, it may not be found in any dictionary, urban or orthodox. I've noticed most ladies who use the term "hussy" are usually uneducated. I'm not saying ALL ladies who use that term are.
ReplyDeleteThere's this client of mine, a very sweet and kind lady. She has no formal education but is very wealthy due to her line of business. I've noticed any time she addresses her husband directly, she goes "hussy, hussy". Lol! Twice, not even once. I hear that term a lot when some ladies speak broken English. People have the right to use whatever short form they please, provided they don't use it in formal settings.
It's good to draw people's attention to the dictionary meaning or the "proper" term but it's also good to know that some "incorrect" terms are allowed under certain conditions and contexts. I use "hubby", most people do but there's no harm or foul in using "hussy". What's more important is that communication isn't hindered. A lot of people will understand when a woman uses "hussy" instead of "hubby".
True, the dictionary meaning of "hussy" is derogatory but it's still ok as a colloquial slang because the people using it use it as a term of endearment. A lot of English words have several meanings, what matters in an informal setting is the intention of the person using that particular term. I may be wrong but I really don't think it's such a big deal, however annoying it might sound.
Ronalda slowly but surely dragging position with stella on this blog. Wehdone ma
