Human Rights Activist Annkio Briggs Says ''Nigeria should Split Too Late To Restructure''

Nigerian environmental and human rights activist, Ankko Briggs, on Wednesday spoke against restructuring of the country, saying it was too late.

Briggs said rather, Nigeria should split so that regions can go their separate ways and develop indivisibly.

The outspoken crusader for the Niger Delta stated that restructuring should have been done before the National Conference in 2014.

Briggs said: “Going by the figures, the North is getting over 60 per cent of the total local government allocations and even when we come to the states as well they also receive far more than the Southern states.

“Again, if you go to the National Assembly, they are far more in numbers, especially in the House of Representatives, and so by the time there is a motion or bill, which they are not in support of, ends up being frustrated or not being passed at all.

“A good example is the PIB that had to spent over 10 years in the National Assembly. How can this continue?”

Briggs alleged that the ruling elites wanted to use restructuring to increase revenue allocation to some parts of the country currently agitating, but retain the same form of governance, which has bred institutional injustice in the country.

“For me, calling for restructuring now is too late we want to go our separate ways because you see what they are calling restructuring is not what restructuring is. Restructuring to them is that the status quo should remain and perhaps a little increase in revenue to agitating regions.

“But the real restructuring is when everybody keeps what you have, even if it is only water that you have, and if you can sell it, sell it. Anything apart from that is not restructuring. What is federalism? This is where you have the states, which are the federating units.

“So a federation means that every component is autonomous to itself within that nation. So how can the Federal Government be interested in building hospitals in Abia State or building a university in Rivers State?

“Nigeria is a good example of how impossible to run a government. How can one man alone, who is of a different culture, language, religion run or oversee the rest of the people of over 400 ethnic groups as if he is overseeing his own personal property or estate?

“He cannot do it right because he doesn’t know my culture and so how can he make decisions that will be 100 per cent appealing to me because the things I would put into consideration if I am to make the same decisions will be totally different.

“What we are saying is that someone who doesn’t understand a people cannot make any good decision for them. If this simple conditions are not met, governance will fail and that is what has happened in the real sense, it has failed in Nigeria.

“The then military leadership under General Abdusalami Abubakar had a rare opportunity of gathering Nigerians together to come up with a document meant to be the constitution.

“But it was bungled because what happened was that one man just sat down and made sure that the document was written to favour a particular section of the country and he called it the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The Nigerian constitution is the only constitution in the world that tells a lie against itself and its people, when its first sentence says: ‘We the people.’ That statement is a lie. There was never a gathering of any people or group of persons to discuss any constitution.

“Do you also know that the constitution was designed to work against people who are not Muslims as the word Islam, Muslim, Sharia or Mosque was mentioned over 200 times, while the word Christian or Church was never mentioned in the constitution? And you say that same constitution is meant for all of us?”

  2. Stella I agree with her. You know when you're arguing and come up with facts.
All these things she took time to explain is happening in Nigeria and she chose her words rightly. She gave options of what to do if we desire to remain as an entity otherwise let's split and that can happen without war.

    1. I agree o, the partiality is too much, Haba. Islam isn't the only religion, Hausas ain't the only tribe, when buhari became president he said he will not favor people who did not vote for him, but as a ruler you shouldn't be partial no matter what, they are your people as long as you chose to be their leader. Oppression cannever be accepted for too long, even in America the blacks decided to fight for their freedom, cus no one should leave in bondage. I support we split. All the leaders of each group can work together when it comes to something that has to do with all of us but let our individual leaders rule us.

  5. Stella, we are ready oh. The discussions i have had in recent weeks (ever since those people say igbos should leave the north) have been mind-blowing. Everyone is on their guard ready for what might happen next There will definitely be a referendum but we don't know what direction it will be in. I think after Bu's tenor there will be a vote for decentralization of Government. And we all know the tribe that won't want to accept that. People like Ambode are showing that states can make progress independent of the federal government, if they have a defined co-operative plan.

  9. She's very right, and yes Stella we're ready to split, and should split. The North has the highest allocation, both budgetary and in terms of job allocations. Jobs opportunities arise, and for e.g you hear Abia 2 slots, sokoto 10 slots for what exactly? Go to all the major parastatals, northerners have taken over, true federalism isn't practiced during employment yet we're supposed to have a functioning federal character commission. Why should a state in the North be getting more allocation than a state in the South, or lagos state for that matter? What really do they produce asides food? What revenue do they generate for the country? Let there be decentralization of powers, and let regions manage their wealth, let regions use their resources to improve and establish their regions, then we'll know who needs who the most.

  10. She is not far from the truth. This one nation called nigeria is not working for us anymore.
Let Nigeria split into 6 geo political zones and let this zones pay tax to the federal govt.

States should control their resources and fund themselves while they pay a token to the govt to fund the security forces and other things qe share collectively.

Stella Nigerians are ready for this split

  12. The problem is not the federal government but the people.
Mrs Briggs, you say how can one man ...a president rule when he does not understand the culture of the people...you forget that is why we have the house of representatives ie MPs and senate to represent the people of different parts of the country.
These people are supposed to work for their people but it is clear those from the south east and some south south just work for themselves and sort their own pockets out.
If the grassroots can hold those representing them accountable for decisions then there would be a change.
Here in England, who knows Theresa May the prime minister directly? who even knows the Queen sef? The ones we speak to and who speak for us at the Members of Parliament(MPs as it is known here). They come into the areas and know what the problems and real grassroot issues are. They discuss with residents not just sitting in an office and appointing Nollywood Special assisstants.
Mrs Briggs, When Jonathan was in Power(and i like Jonathan by the way), we did not hear a single person from the SE shouting because pockets were being lined regularly.. even Omoni Oboli went to lunch a movie in Aso rock and made her cool millions.
You that is talking had your fair share of egunje maybe not as heavy as stella oduah.
Now that there is no free bees again, your lot are calling Johnathan weak and shouting for seperation. Nigeria is one and all parts really need each other. Forget cultural nonsense. You don't run a country by culture trust me...If that were the case, you will end up with nonentities bowing down for the likes of Kanu and even you without questioning you all.

    2. Anon 15.01, you just took your time to type bigoted trash! Are pockets not being lined now? "Lining of pockets" is the common factor of all administrations since 1999, take it or leave it. What differentiates Buhari's administration from the previous ones is the glaring one sideness in almost all the appointments, federal recruitments etc. APC came in with such goodwill and they have misused it. This Northern presidency and their arrogant aloofness is splitting Nigeria.

  13. Just because the North wants to blow everyone up and the herdsmen think with only one side of their brain and the president's fake message in Hausa language as if only Hausas are Muslims and tribal tensions and killings in various parts if the country, we need to split. We have never been one Nigeria. Na fight Fight since. God's will be done.

  14. I agree with her 100%. She has hit the nail on the head. But the problem is even deeper than this. It is a chronic constitutional issue. The constitution has been set so that it robs the south of its natural resources to feed the north. But the average commoner in the north does not even benefit from this stealing. He's still in abject poverty. Nigeria can only move forward by practicing true federalism, that is if we do not want to split. Let the states operate under their zones. There should be five or six zones to wit Southwest, South-south, Southeast, middle belt and north. The zones should operate regional governments n the relevant states should be under their zones. The federal government we have now should be weakened and decentralized such that we do not need to expend so much to run it and keep the legislooters in the houses. Let the regions generate their wealth and use it to build their infrastructure. Only a small percentage should be paid for the running of the center. No more paying to develop other regions. Remove federal xter n besides it will die a natural death when we restructure in this regard. It will stem the tide of fulani cattle rearers entering other regions to kill innicent farmers. Because each region will have their police force. How do you not even have states manage their police force? US that we have copied do this! Its practical! This is the only way we can move forward as one Nigeria otherwisThisbreak up is imminent because the people are dissatisfied and agitated.

  15. If we spilt, how would the middle belt survive?
