Actress Iretiola Doyle Talks About Being Pregnant As A Teen And Her Mum's Reaction

Nollywood actress, Iretiola Doyle who revealed that she first got pregnant at the age of 17 has opened up more on what she had to face for taking in at a very tender age.

The actress while opening up on her past life, especially her childhood revealed that her family members, including her mother were not too excited for her.

She added that her mother was harsh on her for the pregnancy.

Speaking in Lagos at the Harvesters International Christian Centre, the actress said: “You have to surround yourself with people who love and support you. I was blessed to have people around me; unfortunately these people are not family members.”

She added: “My mother didn’t take it lightly with me. I wouldn’t have handled it the way she did because I belong to a different generation. I was nurtured by people I met and they constantly reminded me that my life didn’t end with that bad situation.”

She further pointed out: “I felt I still remained who I was. I came from a very good home, not by wealth but value. Education was not negotiable in my family. I didn’t want that one mistake to define who I was. But it was quite difficult for me because it was the talk of the town for quite a number of years.”

    3. @ galore you will melt if you read that story.i have forgotten the magazine i read her story told by her in details, this was like 5 or 6 years ago. Like four pages or thereabout. From how she ran away from home to stay with the father of the child, how he constantly abused her, his use of alcohol and smoking, his death, how she went back to school, how she reconciled with her parents. I read and I couldn't hold back my tears. How she met Patrick Doyle. It was such an interesting read.

    2. Her daughter is married last year or...

That was what I told my niece when she has her son. She just got admitted into the University when the pregnancy issue surface.
A nurse she went to meet that she missed her period told her she had an infection. She took the medications......
Oh she deferred her admission after registering.... came to Lagos, had her baby

"....Yes it is not end of life,
.... Even Genevieve life didn't stop because she had a child ....
...You are better off that those murdered their child/ren.... Making themselves mother of dead child/ren...
...it will be stupid of her to make same mistake again...
      ..........""

I sternly warned and advised her when she was about going back to school
She graduated with a good grade in Micro-Biology (called me after graduation thanking me for her advise to her four years back.

Married two years ago, has a daughter now.

PS: the son (who looks so much like the father) was returned to the father before she went back to school. . . . .

Her life is a fairy tale. . . It is good to have good aunties, cause her mum (our big sister) almost disowned her but we stood by her.

  7. Every good God fearing mother will act the same way then, this was over 40years ago where moral among families were still of good value. Even now home where its God first we act same way even if they will still bring her closer and help her to face life ahead so she shouldn't paint it as if her mum was wicked or the entire family, she has her fault opening her leg at that age without been given out in marriage so she should admit it

    1. I have a lot of respect for ladies who despite the fear of being disowned by parents, the stigma and shame, choose to be pro life. Two wrongs don't make a right. There is a purpose for every life. If parents will be more supportive once the mistake has happened and more open to knowing what's going on in their daughter's life, a lot of heartache will be avoided!

The pain never left her because when she speaks, you can feel the pain through her eyes. The Igbo guy abandoned her, her family abandoned her but God restored her.
It is well Ireti. Your daughter is married to an Igbo guy and settled. Let it go

  12. Wow Stella! U are scared of having a baby girl because of she getting pregnant? And here I thought u were a progressive person.
Would you rather a boy brings you shame like Evans and all those men who commit heinous crimes bring to their parents?
Personally, I can't even see myself having boys as children because I'd they go bad, they go all the way...
I want to give birth to girls over and over again. She giving birth at as a teenager or unwed would be the least of my worries, is it wrong? Absolutely but life goes on! Women are achieving soo much in this world even after bumps like these and u say you are scared of having girls because of common pregnancy. Dayuuum

    6. Both gender of kids can still make you regret having kids at all.
It's only how you brought them up. As a matter of fact, kids bringing disgrace on their parents should be blamed on their parents and not on the kids. A kid brought up very well won't disgrace the parents except something went wrong somewhere.
It takes the grace of God to bring up a child.

    7. Well said Abi. We are here talking about promoting the girlchild and helping those who are married off early, or can't go to school, and she is here saying she was scared of having a girl. Stella whether you like it or not, there a lot of people that read this blog, a lot of them with very little common sense. Please stop indirectly promoting female hatred and abuse. There is nothing wrong with a having a girl child!

  16. No parent will give his or her 17 year old a pat on the back for either been pregnant or getting someone pregnant at that age.

It's the most dreadful thing that ever parent fears for their teenager.
So ireti should not blame her parents they reacted that way out of love.

  18. I read this years back in Genevieve Mag. She actually eloped with him, They met on a train or something. Let's be honest, no mother would be thrilled at such news. You would only react differently because you lived through that experience already

  22. 8 years ago, two of our neighbors from middle class families both had their daughters pregnant at 16 -for both cases the guys responsible denied. Neighbor1 chased out their daughter in shame and rage, and poor girl had to go begging from door to door. Neighbor2 cared for their daughter until she put to bed, but swore that their daughter will never lose anything due to that. She went back to school to finish her WAEC. Later on, They gathered all resources and sent this girl abroad. Just last year she graduated as a doctor in the USA. Neighbor1's daughter never made it to Uni, still wallows in shame and guilt, while Neighbor2's daughter is earning a cool 100,000$ a year, is engaged to a doc! Is self confident, And even has her mom living with her!

Verdict- Both families are church going christians. But while one family was more interested in 'what will people say', 'societal shame' blabla.. the other sowed and showed love, grace, courage and wisdom. And today they are reaping the fruits! So our definition of a good Christian mother and her supposed reaction is different. We are all undeserving of God's grace and mercy but he gives us freely anyway. Why wouldn't we give same to family if they make poor choices?? May God grant us wisdom to make good decisions Amen.
