Nigerian Couple Convicted In The UK For Slavery

A London -based Nigerian couple were on Friday convicted by a Southwark Crown Court in London for trafficking a “slave nanny” into the United Kingdom from Nigeria.

Judge Martin Beddoe warned that Ayodeji Adewakun, a 44- year old medical doctor and wife, Abimbola Adewakun, a 48 -year old nurse, face “a significant sentence of immediate imprisonment.”

They were granted bail until June 16 when they will be sentenced.

The couple had lured the woman to the UK from Nigeria with promise of £500 per monthly salary.
They confiscated the woman’s passport as soon as she arrived in February 2007 and subjected her to “constant demands and verbal abuse.”She managed to escape two years later after finally receiving just £350 – the equivalent of a wage of £15 a month.

Jurors were unable to reach a verdict in relation to Dr. Adewakun on a charge of trafficking a second alleged victim.

The man was cleared of that charge.

The couple allegedly persuaded the woman to come and care for their two children in Erith, south-east London, years earlier in 2005.

The 37-year-old victim told Southwark Crown Court she was later forced to work all day cleaning the house, cook for the family and was even woken if the doctor got home late and wanted a snack.

When you have small baby one person should resign until you can start dropping them @d day care center. Its better than bringing in people from 9ja.

    3. Take several seats anon 14:05. That case has been in court for years. It's not a new case so don't come and blab that it's because of papers. How can she pay another human being £20 a week!!!!!!!!
Dr Adewakun is my GP and trust me, she is a very mean person. No patient wants to see her twice. People avoid her, she makes people feel like dirt! I went to pick up a prescription last week and three ladies were complaining of how ill she treated them. She is a doctor and her husband is a nurse, they CAN AFFORD any child minder they choose but see where stinginess got them.
Am not rejoicing over her suffering but come on, they were WRONG.

  2. Dear nanny you knew what you were coming to do in London. But as the user that you are you betrayed the couple. Why didn't you tell them you wanted to go back to nigeria? I am sure they would have let you. But "no" you had other plans to seek asylum and tarnish their image. You are a wicked person. If you were underage would have understood. But you are a grown ass woman.

    5. Anon 13.10, you are too right, the nanny knew exactly what she was going to do ie be a nanny. She was obviously coached very well to tarnish the couple's image in other to get her stay and possibly compensation. I really hope the British government at least send the nanny back to Naija instead of giving her a house, money and papers.
I feel sorry for the couple.

    2. @ anon 15:03, pls try and save up as much as you can to get a solicitor. As you have mentioned you have been in UK since 11 years ago, I am sure one of your kids will be past 7 yrs old or almost .Try apply for one that is above 7 or about to when he or she get to that age, but you do need his or her birth certificate. Seek help( advice) from citizens advice bureau, they will advice you well in what to do. Best of luck.

      Delete
    9. Yes.. If the child was born in the UK, he or she is entitled to a British passport when is 10 years and the parent can use this to file for their papers as well.i.e after getting the British passport for the child.

  11. something similar happened to a friend of mine.
Brought in two step sisters on the pretense that they are under age so that they can take advantage of the education system.
As soon as their eyes opened, one ran off with a man, the other almost got my friend into trouble telling authorities she was maltreated and that he falsified their birth certificates to get them. he was so lucky, the social worker dealing with the case could see beyond the stories being told and advised him to return her to naija. He eventually tricked her, saying they have to go extend her visa in naija. when they got home, he called a family meeting and explained what happened and didnt even bid anyone farewell before he left for London.

  13. I blame d doctor nd his wife for nt paying her what they had earlier agreed nd d woman for going that far to implicate them,we should learn to forgive when we are treated wrongly

  14. I don't know why Nigerians in diaspora do that alot. That was how Uche and her husband in Atlanta Georgia almost turned my sis to a nanny because they offered her accommodation when she got American Visa lottery. They ceased her passport and other docs. They forgot that they were dealing with a graduate. My sis was able to leave their home after 6 months not without police involvement.

  15. We should not get into conclusion yet, because we have not heard the other side of the story. Moreover, the nanny is a woman and not child .She can easily pull out from the said contract if she is not happy.
