The joint comittee, which will also investigate failure of MNET to adopt the “pay as you go” option for Nigerian subscribers, is to report back to the House in eight weeks, for further legislative action.
The resolution o§f the House was subsequent to the adoption of a motion entitled: “Need to Investigate the Exorbitant Charges and Refusal of Multi-choice Statelite Television to Adopt Pay- as -You -Go Pakage Option”, sponsored by Abbas Tajudeen.
Tajudeen in his lead debate on the motion, described as highly insensitive, the trend in which the prices of different bouquet Multichoice Satellite Television outlets have been increased in recent years . He also condemned the refusal of the company to offer “pay- as- you- go” option on its digital satellite television, which he said is causing a financial strain on its subscribers.
According to him, it has been the practice for the company to increase the price of it’s various packages almost on a yearly basis.
“In 2013, the monthly subscription increased by 7-10 percent in 2014 by 10-15 percent and in 2015 by 10-22 percent and just recenltly, the company sent a notification of another price increase with effect from May.
“DSTV does not have a pay- as- you- go plan like most similar communication companies around the world , thereby making its subscription plan to expire at the end of the monthly subscription period, whether or not the subscriber uses the services,” he said.
He argued that the regular increase in the prices of the various bouquet and MNET”s failure to adopt a “pay- as -you- go” payment option goes against globally acceptable fair business practice.
He expressed concern on the seeming inability of the relevant regulatory agencies to police the industry.
The motion was unanimously adopted by members when it was put to a voice vote by the Deputy Speaker, Yussuff Lasun who presided over the plenary.

Very good move. Our mumu don do
ReplyDeleteSomeone would have thought these people have sensible matters to discuss inside that house of assembly. How DSTV price take concern them na? If dem increase price, did dey make it mandatory you patronize dem? this is laughable
ReplyDeleteDo you know Nigeria is currently experiencing lethal meningitis outbreak in 16 states of the country? Learn about this latest outbreak and how to protect yourself and your loved ones
Excuse you!
DeleteThis is a very sensible matter, i'm glad they are addressing this.
U very stupid.
DeleteNo you are fantastically stupid! What percentage of Nigerians does DSTV affect compared to other pressing issues that affect most of Nigerians?
DeleteIt does concern them. They are our reps. Multichoice abi DSTV needs to be dealt with.
DeleteThere is no way to place sone Nigerians. So, the matter doesn't concern and u want dstv to keep exploiting Nigerians.Great move they are making.
DeleteIfeoma, them dey play 1010 for your brain truly.
DeleteI pray this bill work out; with the rate at which power failure occur in my area, Dstv should just rest!
Ifeoma Pls clean ur mouth. Cos u fuck up with dis statement.
Delete@ Ifeoma 1010...leave this sentimental cows cursing up and down. DSTv is not an "essential" service...that is you can live life comfortably without DSTv, it is STRICTLY for pleasure & if you really want that pleasure, you should pay for it or jejely find alternatives. House of Reps should also call up Nigerian Breweries and Nigerian Bottling Company for increasing the price of beer and soft drinks nah, since they're looking out for Nigerians. How much is a carton of Indomie noodles now? Why aren't they going after the producers about price hike? What they should be asking is why NTA or any indigenous company can't provide similar services like Multichoice or better yet, since they're hiking prices, hike their taxes and corporate social responsibilities as well.
DeleteYou're laughable, oro osi
DeleteDear sentimental cow, english is not that hard, if compulsory is the word you're looking for, well there you have it, but essential? Haba, how can you even compare NTA to DSTV? Do you know we don't have any reasonable cable network in this country without dstv? Maybe this would serve as a wake up call for everyone, if dstv doesn't come through this time, we would finally have a reason to send them away and maybe we can start some serious TV business in this old for nothing country
DeleteThere's little sense in your post. If we want to go by your thoughts, soft drinks and beer are not a must. You don't pay for drinks and beer that you won't drink or do you? Drinks and beer nwanu are strictly for pleasure as well, if you can't afford it, drink water, I hear well water is good and it's free. We're talking a reduction in price and/or a pay as you go option, soft drinks and beer, really? Be reasonable
DeleteAnonymous 12:01...compulsory and essential have different meanings, I chose essential for a reason. That we don't have any reasonable TV isn't DSTv's making. They're here for business & that's what they're doing. You can send them away all you want but until then, you can pay your subscription and watch it or quietly stop using DSTv & I'm SURE they won't notice you're gone.
DeleteAnonymous 12:10...when you buy that subscription, it is sold to you only monthly basis, why are you complaining about pay-per-view, when you bought monthly subscription? If they don't offer what you want, find any company that sells PPV content & pitch your tent with them. Why don't we also complain to NB to start bottling beer in purewater sachets because it'll be cheaper & you buy the amount you want. NB does bottles and if you don't like it, find another brand that caters to your taste
hahahahaha are they government institutions. Nonsense Reps
ReplyDeleteThank God jare
ReplyDeleteDon't mind yeye Dstv because we watched bbnaija now they want to increase it awon ode
ReplyDeleteLike their rejection will make any difference. Rejection that they cannot enforce, is that one a rejection?
ReplyDeleteIt will make a lot of difference, they are just doing their job protecting the interest of those that voted for them. I like this.
DeleteI just got the text message yesterday. What are they even showing that they are adding money. I dont blame them. When they made mega money in just the last bigbrother show, they can as well add small money. Afterall Naijas will complain and still go ahead and pay. They just fill their packages with rubbish channels. Half of them are just useless to view.
ReplyDeleteThe reps are in the right direction. We shd have what is done in other countries of the world. In S.A do dey pay for monthly charges?so why shd Nigerians pay for monthly charges?so if u don't have light to watch what u subscribe for,at d end of d month u pay again.Nonsense.
ReplyDeleteSo if you buy milk from a store and your government fails to give you light, the store should replace the milk when it goes bad? Your government's monumental failure in the power sector has no effect of Multichoice's business...why will you have Tv and subscribe when you don't have light?
DeleteI have constant light, but all i get sometimes is just 30-40mimutes of TV a day, cos of work and responsibilities, so no not really. And talking about light some of us use pay as go as well. Do you get
DeleteYou're now bringing your lifestyle to affect their business, some people have DSTv in their restaurants and watch it 10-15 hours a day...what's your take on that? Multichoice offers monthly subscriptions and you buy it without being coerced, why are you complaining? If their services ain't making the cut for you, ditch them & watch something else
DeleteGood move,i hope it will yield positive result cos these companies do not have regard for our lawmakers. once they settle people in high places, they feel they have the power to do whatever they like.
ReplyDeleteThank you for Repping. The charges are too high now. They are just ripping Nigerians.
ReplyDeletePls, Let them introduce Pay-As-You-Go method. Mostly in this era where there is no Light, so that we Nigerians can enjoy our subscription.
The you Nigeria Reps.
You see your life? In this era of no light like it's normal? Tell your Rep to probe the Ministry of Power & find out why they're not giving you & not dabbling into price regulation, it's not their mandate! There's no caveat when you buy subscriptions talking bout light or no light
DeleteWe all know the proverb of the toothless dog....and we know who the toothless dog is in this instance......smh
ReplyDeleteI feel the national assembly do not discuss important issues, DSTV is a private company can decide to increase their tarriff as the case maybe, what the national assembly neeeds to be discusing about if they are really serious is to get a very compitive provider so that peolple will have good choices to chose from, not sitting down there and shouting for something that is not their business, Is Dstv the only satellite TV?
ReplyDeleteOne thing I've learnt about Nigeria and Nigerians is that, irrespective of what is happening in saner parts of the world, there is no 'right' or 'wrong'. There is only what Nigerians feel is right and what Nigerians feel is wrong. Easy oil money, and the trappings that it brings, has made us believe that we are the smartest people on this earth. We feel somehow that our oil wealth is a result of our ingenuity and enterprise. Smh!
DeleteYou are correct. DSTV is a private company. They are not a monopoly and, as far as I know, they are not breaking any law. If the tiny proportion of Nigerians that patronise them feel that their prices are too high, then they should take their patronage somewhere else. Surely they are more serious issues to be addressed?
Mtchewww, all they do is bark without bite.
ReplyDeleteFG weldone.
ReplyDeletePrivate Coy, that doesn't mean they can be robbing us in this recession.
Then stop using them!
DeleteDstv is a ripoff only God can help us...
ReplyDeletealways exploiting nija and am sure they kill other stations here .
These our so-called representatives are jobless. Dstv is a private business in the market place. If one thinks their price is too much then boycott their service! What have our representatives done about reducing cost of food stuff in the market?
ReplyDeleteOkay o but why 8 weeks?
