    1. I am no bishop or scholar by any stretch of my imagination but I'll share what this means for me. It's about tolerance and being discerning. So I share a street with very rich Hausa families. As you'd expect, most of the properties on my street have mosques attached to them. I'd say at least 8. You can imagine all of them saying call to prayer at the same time on a Tuesday 5am. That would be callous. So is knowing someone to be gay and opening them up to ridicule and suffering. The point is that it is not enough to do Gods work. How you do it also matters.

    2. Pls lets us be careful. If U dont know a scripture meaning shut up. Let me give U the amplified version for better understanding
      Proverbs 27 (AMP)
      14. The flatterer who loudly praises and glorifies his neighbor, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted as cursing him [for he will be suspected of sinister purposes].

    3. I will set trap for one of my neighbour who is always shouting repent repent early mornings. In fact I will show him this scripture and if he dosent change I will just jejely park out. is it his toto I'm doing? Mchw

    4. Let's not read the Bible out of context. This verse simply refers to those who help others and shout it to the rooftops, especially using it as a means of disturbing others.

    5. Hear this! This verse is not and cannot condemn morning evangelism or morning cry.
Proverb 27:14 Goodnews bible: you might as well curse your friends as wake them up early in the morning with a loud greeting.

  2. The Bible is controversial cos it's written by men

    1. The Bible is not controversial, it is the word of God. The problem arises when men use their own wisdom to understand it or isolate a verse and try to apply human understanding to it.

    2. Olori.. Controversial kee? No no no. Well. Everyone to their own opinion

    3. Written by men with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

    4. The Bible is not only tainted with controversial, it's also littered with contradictions, oppression and violence. Essentially the same questions could be asked about "Religion." That religion Itself is tainted to its core by a power- hungry desire to impose its will on others even through violence and exploitation.

    5. The Bible is not controversial, my darling. The problem is, most people try to understand divinity with the ordinary human mind. The verses of the Bible are open to several interpretations, ergo the numerous doctrines upheld by various churches.

The Bible was written by men through divine inspiration. It's a holy Book and the temptation to take every one literally should be resisted. We should pray for God to open the eyes of our hearts and grant us keen understanding of His Words, before we read the Bible.

Clearly, that verse is not condemning early morning evangelism, far from it. Rather it is condemning lip service or being too loud and zealous in showing appreciation to a friend who has done something kind or good to you. Don't be too eager to express gratitude to a helper, that you have to start so early in the morning and so loud that it catches the attention of your neighbours, as was the tradition of the gentiles then. Moderation is key, even when showing gratitude.

The Bible encourages christians to apply moderation and temperance in our daily lives. Don't pray like a hypocrite using tedious repetition just to appear "holy" or pius, Matthew 6:7-8. The Bible is also against doing charitable or merciful deeds just to show off. It says "but when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing." Matthew 6:3. I think Proverbs 27:14 falls within the same purview.‎

    1. It is exactly as it is written. I love the Bible truly. It has also said not to let 1 hand know what d other is doing, also not to pray loudly. Knowing when to be discreet is key.
Them megaphone preachers, if I am startled out of bed by ur noise all in d name of preaching of cos I'd be mad! U hv led me to sin cos I will abuse u and d aim of ur "preaching" is defeated.

    1. Ola,you are wise.

Meanwhile, I just checked this verse in Good news and it says...

"You might as well curse your friends as wake them up early in the morning with a loud greeting"
Bible translation needs divine knowledge not natural knowledge.

  7. I think that portion is talking about blessing your friend as in helping someone. It means you shouldn't announce it for others to hear when you help someone. It was also repeated somewhere else in the Bible.

    1. Exactly. It means keeping it low when you want to bless someone. Like someone people will give something to somebody and before you know it, everybody is already aware.

  9. Stella you can exaggerate at times ehn! Still looking out for the shocking read.

  10. I went to google to look for the meaning and this is what I got

"He who blesses his friend with a flattering loud voice is not different from him who curses.”

The person who flatters his friend by blessing him with a loud voice, while he has ulterior motives and insincerity in his heart, can be compared with those who pray to God with a loud voice, but who are unwilling to submit to Him. In either case, such a “blessing” or prayer of “thanks” will not produce positive results, as Ezekiel 8:18 states: “.. though they cry in My ears with a loud voice, I will not hear them.”

  12. The bible is like a literature , you don't just trwnslate it anyhow . It simply means don't be a town crier after blessing your friend . It's no longer a blessing but a curse

It is never reasonable to remove a part of the Bible, read the previous chapter and next to understand what particular message is been passed. Simple!!!

  18. It's proverbs! Figure of speech! I'm still shocked after watching a video, how an African lady was beaten with a plank! That video is still playing in my head! Those wicked men used a log to hit her head after placing something on her head! I don't know what she did! But that was too graphic and scary, right in a bush!

I look at people with megaphone like a fanatics, oversabi preachers.

  25. Wrong interpretation of the the Bible. This verse has nothing to do with preaching in the street. Don't call God or Christian into this matter. Even the Mosque that wake people up with their call to prayer are not part of this. VERY WRONG!

  26. No Stella I don't think that is the meaning, i will read the whole verse for better understaning

People should learn how to study the bible with the help of the Holy Spirit instead of just reading it like it's a blog *side eyes at Stella.
