Husband Of Woman Who Died After Birthing Via C-Section Cries Out That His Wife Was Butchered

Amaka died on Sunday whilst trying to birth her baby via CS.....She was allegedly butchered by the Doctors....Sad and heart breaking story.....

Medical errors in hospitals kill more Nigerians every year than AIDS, malaria, breast cancer and auto accidents combined.

But Arlindo Defreitas, a Portuguese national living in Lagos, never thought his wife would be one of those statistics. After all, he attended almost 5 years of medical school back in Portugal.

But when his wife took a turn for the worse during a cesarean section at the Medical Art Center (MART) in Lagos, he went from being confident to helpless and lost husband, afraid of questioning the care she was getting, for fear it would become worse.

Arlindo, who now has to care for his son alone after his wife died following the cesarean section says his wife was killed by doctors at the Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Onigbongbo, Lagos, based hospital.

“When I entered the theater all her organs was scattered around, I couldn’t look , it was like the work of a butcher.” I told the doctor my wife is not a cow, he said.

Arlindo said his wife, Amaka, 24, showed no signs of distress in the weeks following up to the c-section.

According to him, after 4 years trying to conceive, his wife finally got pregnant and was a pre-natal care patient at the MART Hospital.

“Last week Friday at 41 weeks of pregnancy, doctors at the hospital told us that no baby water was seen and as a result a cesarean section operation must be done as soon as possible.” The procedure was done and the baby was delivered by 8.30 am on Saturday, and we were very happy- for a short time, he said.

“I was very happy even though the baby almost died as I was told by the doctors that the baby was almost ‘strangled’ by the umbilical cord, the head was red and one arm was white, the skin was very wrinkled.” “My wife was moved out of the theater and transferred to a private room to recuperate”‘ At some point she was in excruciating pain, and the doctors kept giving her doses upon doses of pain killers”.

“I was uncomfortable and I told them that from my experience as a medical student years ago I think my wife hemorrhaged. At that point Arlindo watched as her condition steadily worsened, until doctors asked him to leave the room. He claimed that after his persistence the doctors ran a test and said that his wife lost a lot of blood during the cesarean section.

“I was asked to leave and wait for a call before coming back, so I went home”.

In the words of Michael Klimek, a friend of Arlindo and a fellow European from Germany, ” after she delivered the baby, the doctor told her that she have to drink 5 bottles of water.” I was shocked, everybody knows how dangerous it is for a woman that just underwent C-Section to drink water”. ” After drinking the water, the bleeding started and it won´t stop. They gave her 2 bags of blood-transfusion, but it was not helpful.”

“Hours later the doctors said they have to cut her open again to find out what was going on with her, Klimek said in shock. At that point the husband said he was told that she has low blood a 12.7% packed cell volume (PCV)”.

” I said why can’t you use ultrasonic Tools and scans to see what’s going on, instead of cutting her open again and allowing her lose more blood which is already a problem”.

“By the time I got to the hospital, they already cut her open for the second surgery, they opened her thorax from under the breast down – and finally, they found nothing after 4 hours of operation.”

“I was an emotional wreck by this point.” I never gave consent for the second surgery, nobody in my wife’s family did, Arlindo told Per Second News. “Until this moment cause of death is still unknown”.

“I don´t understand this doctors and hospitals. This “Photoshop certificate Doctor” killed our best friend and for this he must be imprisoned for life and the MART Hospital shut down for ever. And none of this doctor or nurses must practice in this profession again, said an angry Klimek, friend of the husband.

” I am from Germany and when this things happen in Germany or Europe, the government conduct an investigation, I hope, this will be the same here, he asked.

“Now I can understand, why your president went to medical check up outside of Nigeria, he concluded.

The husband of the deceased claim that one Dr Moses butchered his wife to death, “yes Moses killed my wife”. ” After they noticed their mistake they refuse to tell me details, I called them continuously and they won’t pick my phone”.

Per Second News reached out to the hospital and the chief medical director, Prof Oladapo Ashiru, said the Mart medicare gave the deceased high quality care with experienced professionals.

“The lady Amaka, was young, she said she was 24 but she looked 21”. “

He said all those that attended to her from the Obstetrician to the Anesthesiologist and Nurses are well experienced professionals. Ashiru said he has well over 40 years experience.

He revealed that he was not part of the team that worked on Amaka and directed us to the consultant who spoke to Per Second News about what transpired.

MART MEDICARE RESPONSE

Dr Makewu said with the help of fertility doctors from the MART Center, Amaka Defeitas, conceived using IVF, after which we had a meeting with the couple detailing a 13 week management plan that includes C-section at birth.

“Mr Defreitas rejected the C-section saying he wanted his wife to have it the natural way, despite several medical advice from us”.

“At 37 weeks there was no sign of labor and they were still insisting on natural means”. I didn’t see them or hear from them again until I called them at 39 weeks and she said she travelled and was not around”. “They finally came when the pregnancy was at 41 weeks, after a scan no baby water was seen at that point I told them categorically that a C-Section must be done immediately.”

“We did the procedure and the baby arrived Saturday morning, except for the umbilical cord that was around the baby’s neck, everything was fine, both mother and baby were fine and we even moved her out of the theater to the normal room for her to recuperate.”

“Hours after the first surgery she started complaining of tummy ache and severe pain, despite the pain killers being administered on her, she also complained of abdominal pain.

“She was pale and we ran a test and found out that her blood level was 12.7 percent low, at that point we did the second surgery to find out what was the cause of pain”. Dr Makewu put the blame at the doorsteps of the Defeitas, saying the operation should have been done weeks before the 41 week period.

Asked about cause of death, he said autopsy is currently being carried out. But Mr Defeitas insists that it was an error on the part of the doctors to cut his wife open for the second time within a 24 hour period.

Justifying his claim, Defreitas, said he did not give his consent for the second surgery because he expected the hospital to do a comprehensive CT-Scan of the Pelvic & Abdomen to get the right diagnosis, rather the doctors did a normal blood test which will never tell you if a patient has a blood clot or something more fatal.

“I insisted in scan but before I arrived at the hospital they already cut her open and allowing her to lose more blood leading to her death”.

A doctor close to the family said ” Possibly she bled a lot at first surgery, maybe the womb did not contract well also”. “She could also have had a DIC (Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation) an acquired bleeding disorder from too much blood loss, which makes it impossible for the body to stop further blood loss”.

Defreitas, a retired professional with Lufthansa, German airline opened up in a lengthy discussion with Per Second News about living with the heartbreaking loss of his wife, Amaka, an Imo state indigene.

The family are still in shock and traumatised over the mysterious death of Amaka Defeitas, with the husband demanding that an independent postmortem be done on the remains of his wife.

“We travelled all over the world together and looking forward to spending our lives in Nigeria, its so sad, I don’t know what to do next”.

Speaking with Per Second News Dr Tiffany Jones, a US based obstetrician, said the case of the late Amaka Defreitas, is both pathetic and curious, wondering the rationale for making her go under the knife within 24 hoursafter the C-Section. She said the most common reason women die during C-sections is bleeding. Bleeding can be fast and severe and by the time any medical protocol can be instituted, sometimes it’s just too late.

“That is why I believe the second surgery was not necessary”.

“Other C-section complications include bladder injury, infection, bowel injuries and blood clots, which can sometimes result in pulmonary embolisms. A pulmonary embolism is a potentially fatal blockage of the main artery of the lung by a substance that has traveled from somewhere else in the body.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Amaka’s husband, family and son during this difficult time.

When people in the UK are begging for planned C-Section.
Don't I just hate Nigeria, that's how my mum was killed at Jolad Hospital in Bariga, Lagos and no one could hold the hospital staff ransom.
They just waste life's on Nigeria.
May her beautiful soul RIP and may God uphold her husband and family at this very difficult time.

    4. Well, in terms of uterine bleeding after surgery a second surgery is very very important. It has saved lives and we do it here a lot in the UK. When you hear of bleeding following child delivery, it can happens within 5mins and the patient is dead. That is not the time to start doing any CTSCAN or ultrasound. Just open up and stop the bleeding (that is the teaching). In most medical texts, reactionary haemorrhage esp when a patient is recovering from anaesthesia can cause stiches to loosen and in that case, the appropriate thing to do is to go back into the theatre and open up to arrest the blood loss.
If I were in their shoes, I will do the same thing cos whatever is causing that bleeding must be in the womb. Even if you give her 20units of blood, it will still run out in a couple of seconds. Uterine bleeding runs like tap for people that haven't seen. In mins you will lose 6litres. It is like magic.
Secondly, if you are a patients care giver, don't always argue with the people that are about to give you medical care, even when you are tensed, find a subtle way to discuss your fears, from experience, I have seen a consultant, the best in the unit shivering and trembling while performing a minor surgery. why? Just because the person is a high profile patient. It was so bad that he had to step aside for one of the youngest doctors to do the surgery. These people are humans and sometimes when you put so much pressure, it will affect the level of care you get.
The husband didn't tell us that these doctors did a successful IVF for them. Why didn't they heed to the first advice, the baby was also over due at 41 weeks. They were lucky the child survived because I can't even begin to imagine how that baby suffered without amniotic fluid in the womb. This also goes to show that the husband has been disregarding doctors advice. He also didn't state that he rejected early CS and stoped coming for antenatal care for a while and even the pregnancy lasted beyond 9months. Unfortunately, these issues are also important.
This case is a two way thing. Both the husband and the hospital should be held responsible. Listen to your doctor, heed their advice, ask questions and read up topics online. That will help you know if you can trust the doctor with your life or not. Once you have doubts, instead of staying and arguing up and down with the doctor and having him enter theatre in a certain mindset, please go to another hospital for crying out loud. Why must you still allow your wife to go ahead in that same hospital that you are always arguing with the doctor. The doctor had to even call before you went back. In Obstetrics, a day can change the outcome of any pregnancy. Just one day.
Let the government investigate this case independently and take action immediately. This is sad. Please, if you are not a doctor, you are not a doctor. There is nothing like, I am almost a doctor, that is also quackery. Once you feel that you don't trust this doctors judgement, go to another hospital. C/S is the most common surgery that is performed in any hospital. Even in the rural areas, deaths are not that common except few cases where there are either negligence or patients insists they must deliver the Hebrew way until they have complications. Do the right thing at the right time and let's see how many problems will come out of it. Then you can hold the hospital soley responsible. Instead of arguing and fighting with a driver who is driving on the express, quietly come down and board another vehicle. Any little distraction or emotional instability can cause troubles, even robots jamm.
Please, people should protest. Let independent autopsy be carried out. This is heartbreaking. Women, learn to speak out for yourselves, once your relatives quarell with your care givers esp before a procedure, please opt out and go to another facility. Now she is dead, the man wants the hosp shut down. She is gone just like that. Please don't be a subject of two elephants battle. It is better to live than dead.

She would have still died ....
You know why??? Because early intervention tests and delivery were not done. It's better to prevent complication than to try to fix some complications which ar forward ever.

This would have only taken GOD intervention to be frank.

    12. Anon 11:39 God bless your wisdom! Is it by force to use a particular hospital? When they advised elective CS, why didn't they seek a 2nd/3rd opinion before ditching the idea?
The husband stated they have traveled round the world and I am amazed that despite all the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy they chose to deliver in Nigeria while not trusting their analysis!
I had an emergency CS with one of my boys at 38weeks because the amniotic fluid was decreasing, How this couple's baby survived at 41week without amniotic fluid is God consoling the family.
      May Amaka's soul rest on.

Frankly I am angry at MART for two reasons, one is their use of inexpirienced doctors when it matters most. I have been there.
      2. What has her age got to do with their mistake. Is it their business, a man is crying that he almost his wife, instead of telling and proving to him you did ur best medically, u are busy saying she looked 21??? Is it ur business, why are u trying to divert attention to another thing entirely. Don't let me open up on your hospital.

My sis in law went there when she couldn't conceive after 2 yrs of marriage, she was 23, instead of investigating what the problem is, they were busy pushing her to do IVF ASAP.she wen to another fertility clinic who took their time and conducted tests, they found the problem and corrected it. She took in naturally 4 months later.

Don't be suprised that this girl didnt need IVF but once they feel there's money, they'll jejely advise her to just go ahead and do IVF. MART should change their ways, I am nit happy at all with their response, if the girl married her grandfather, its none of their business. Girls of 17 -18 get pregnant and deliver all the time. Please go and read up the definition of Term Pregnancy (it is from 37 to 40 calendar weeks). If you say 42 weeks is term, what do you define as Postdatism or post date pregnancy. So, as a nurse if you see a woman at 42weeks of pregnancy, you will give her kudos and ask her to go home and come bk after 1week. That will make it 43weeks. What a wawuuuuuuu. A butterfly that think itself an eagle.
You are challenging a doctor with that your backyard 3days training certificate. Please, you have no RIGHT to take a decision on a patient. Please please and please.
Amaka is dead partly because her husband thought he knows enough to challenge doctors advice without even seeking an opinion of a second doctor. Go and read your book please.

    17. Ifeoma that pregnancy that was advised for an elective CS at 38 weeks is long overdue at 41 weeks. It is a miracle the child survived.
I once had a diabetic px that was scheduled for surgery at 37 weeks she came after 2days and the baby was dead. The hospital she was transferred from said fetal heart was already faint early that day but she refused any intervention. In Obstetrics when you are given a date, hours matter a lot not to talk of days and in this case 3 or 4 extra weeks. Please stop talking as if you are an authority in the medical field when all you do is to read up patients case notes and feel you have some knowledge.

But the hospital is sick for not checking her blood level before the first surgery cus that's the only way you will know if her blood is enough for such and provide more if need be

In your country, will you be declared innocent? Did you take her to another hospital? NO. If the hospital didn't call to check on her, she would have carried belle till the child turns 10years in the womb. Take your own responsibility and let the hospital take theirs. 18. Oh My God!!! Nigerian hospitals have killed so many people, God cant they have a body that check that hospitals are up to standard? this is so unfair. A friend recently lost her mum due to a quack doctor's mistake (Government hospital). She had TB so they said and they gave her overdose, this woman had sores from head to toe because of the medication and eventually lost her life.

Same with my mum, common BP they gave her overdose, shes been coughing for 5 months nonstop, i don't understand, thank God for medical doctors inlaws. Do these guys buy certificates???

my dad nko, they prescribed strong medication cause he had pain o, he had sore on his chest and at the same exact place at his back, it was so bad that his clothes stuck to it we forcefully tear it off from the sore and it will bleed. If i ever get into government, health care is my primary goal. I will ensure all these yeye hospitals are shut until they are up to standard.

I am really afraid of naija, terrified of visiting, though i miss the place but gosh i think i will pass.

What you now don't realise is that the new doctors that are in constant training are even more reliable cos they read current stuff and do surgeries on daily basis, consultants come in once in a while. Medicine is the more you do the more you know and the less mistake you make. Once you reduce the amount of time you enter theatre, you automatically start losing skills. Medicine is so delicate...Yes i am a dr.i think i understand the doctors' rationale for going in a 2nd time, especially wt how expensive ct scans are and the delay that would occur if they had to send her out to get them but ethically that is what should be done.i dont practise in Nigeria but i believe niherian doctors know what to do...their hands are just really tied.In thd united states and u.k,ct scans are done routinely under 30minutes...Not so in Nigeria..

    1. I agree with both the doctor and the husband . A woman who was 41 weeks and was advised to do an elective CS early .. the husband should have brought her in time
Because DIC( disseminatied intravascular coagulation) is more likely to have started).
If she was bleeding .. the doctors like you said should have done proper investigations to ascertain the cause of bleeding.

Even a Clothing profile test should have been done earlier with INR.

But in summary this is an inevitable complication and was a tough one honestly . I will reserve my thoughts for now till the autopsy result is ready.

    3. Doctor indeed! You have a patient who is having severe abdominal pains after surgery , with a pcv of 12%, and all you want to do is start doing abdominal scan to show u bleeding artery abi? Us doctor.

      Delete
    4. My dear doc, I don't know the medical school you graduated from that will be doing CTSCAN in this kinda obs emergency for a patient that doesn't have Head injury.
You already know that her pcv is falling, way below what you had before surgery and atleast with the estimated blood loss plus 2pints of blood post operative.
Please it shows she is still bleeding ACTIVELY and the only source has to be to rule out any active bleeding. Find the source and clamp it. That is the only reasonable thing to do. You will take to scan and then she dies inside there. You don't have to waste in this situation but to do an emergency exploratory laparotomy. Infact, the scar/ tear should be a longitudinal scar from (tearing from below the chest down) to give enough space for visualisation. Cosmesis is not what you are thinking about but you have to create room to see everything under proper lighting. Remember that insurgery, everything is red to laymen like her husband. About her organs scattering everywhere, where else do you expect them to keep them? You eviscerate (bring it out) the womb to have a better look. Push the intestines one side if it will disturb, that is what doctors NORMALLY do. That one is not a point to score anyone low.

The doctor was just helpless looking at me and asking stupid unrelated questions. if not for the timely intervention of mummy kate my mothers best friend who was a retired nurse and asked that i should be taken home, i would have died in ATBUTH. After series of test, scan and xray na for house we go do treatment. My bum bum suffered as a result of injections, i had plenty drips that i eventually lost counts, my arms was sore due to drips and multiple injections, i eventually healed. A retired nurse did what those stupid young doctors could not do.

  44. CS in most Nigerian hospitals is a death sentence that is why most people reject it like a plague.

I shed tears reading this story. My tears are out of pity for this young lady and family and also from memories of my experience in the hands of a private hospital during my own CS delivery six years ago. I died and rose again by His grace and I'm still trying to concieve since then.

Everything was normal until the day of delivery. I laboured for about 12hours when the doctor now induced me with drip. The pains quadrupled, I was in hell. My water broke but I was still in 3cm dilation. After sometime, Emergency CS was recommended and I was wheeled into the theatre. During the operation they said I opened my eyes but I was actually unconcious of what was going on. I was gone already. I later regained consciousness in the ward and discovered I was cut from my navel down to the top of my private part. I was in serious pains and very weak that all I silently prayed for was for God to let me live. At a point I looked at my child and felt pity for him thinking I was going to die. 5days after, I was still in pains, my relatives looked at me helplessly lying on the bed and shed tears, a test was conducted and I was said to have low pvc and a blood transfusion was recommended. It's such a long story. The wound was infected and a gaping hole was in my stomach, I had urinary tract infection, I couldn't walk well for one month, and so on. Thank God I survived with a long scar on my stomach and my child also lived. Today, I'm still trying for another child.

  54. I read the narratives of both the woman's husband and Mart medical.

I don't know why some Nigerian private hospitals always have a defense for their gross incompetence. Look at the narrative of the hospital, they started by telling us about how she did IVF (Is that necessary?what exactly is their point) ,then they proceeded to tell us that the lady looked 21 (Do you have a machine in your hospital that can tell someone's age?)

Let's imagine she is 21 years, is she not in the best age and shape of her life to give birth through vagina than CS? What was your reason for asking her to give birth through CS(you didn't tell us that). Most private hospitals in Nigeria advises their client to have a baby through CS not because they have some complications that would warrant that but because they want to make extra money. You don't perform surgery on someone except it is absolutely necessary, same way you don't give a patient injection except it is required.

Delayed fertility does not mean she should take the route of CS. A lot of women who went through IVF gave birth through vaginal delivery except if they are advanced or there is a valid medical reason for such.

Nigerian Medical Association need to review the criteria for dishing out licences. We have lots of drunk surgeons performing surgery on patients. We have Surgeons with unsteady hands performing surgery or do I need to talk about the gynaecologist giving out drugs for pregnant women to take without explaining to them what the drugs are for and the possible side effect.

It doesn't matter whether patient's have died in the hospital or not, the fact is that a patient just died. You don't have to wait until more lives are lost before something is done. They should be thoroughly investigated and corrected. Even if a patient has a terminal illness, if it is managed effectively, the patient can live till old age.
