Medical errors in hospitals kill more Nigerians every year than AIDS, malaria, breast cancer and auto accidents combined.
But Arlindo Defreitas, a Portuguese national living in Lagos, never thought his wife would be one of those statistics. After all, he attended almost 5 years of medical school back in Portugal.
But when his wife took a turn for the worse during a cesarean section at the Medical Art Center (MART) in Lagos, he went from being confident to helpless and lost husband, afraid of questioning the care she was getting, for fear it would become worse.
Arlindo, who now has to care for his son alone after his wife died following the cesarean section says his wife was killed by doctors at the Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Onigbongbo, Lagos, based hospital.
“When I entered the theater all her organs was scattered around, I couldn’t look , it was like the work of a butcher.” I told the doctor my wife is not a cow, he said.
Arlindo said his wife, Amaka, 24, showed no signs of distress in the weeks following up to the c-section.
According to him, after 4 years trying to conceive, his wife finally got pregnant and was a pre-natal care patient at the MART Hospital.
“Last week Friday at 41 weeks of pregnancy, doctors at the hospital told us that no baby water was seen and as a result a cesarean section operation must be done as soon as possible.” The procedure was done and the baby was delivered by 8.30 am on Saturday, and we were very happy- for a short time, he said.
“I was very happy even though the baby almost died as I was told by the doctors that the baby was almost ‘strangled’ by the umbilical cord, the head was red and one arm was white, the skin was very wrinkled.” “My wife was moved out of the theater and transferred to a private room to recuperate”‘ At some point she was in excruciating pain, and the doctors kept giving her doses upon doses of pain killers”.
“I was uncomfortable and I told them that from my experience as a medical student years ago I think my wife hemorrhaged. At that point Arlindo watched as her condition steadily worsened, until doctors asked him to leave the room. He claimed that after his persistence the doctors ran a test and said that his wife lost a lot of blood during the cesarean section.
“I was asked to leave and wait for a call before coming back, so I went home”.
In the words of Michael Klimek, a friend of Arlindo and a fellow European from Germany, ” after she delivered the baby, the doctor told her that she have to drink 5 bottles of water.” I was shocked, everybody knows how dangerous it is for a woman that just underwent C-Section to drink water”. ” After drinking the water, the bleeding started and it won´t stop. They gave her 2 bags of blood-transfusion, but it was not helpful.”
“Hours later the doctors said they have to cut her open again to find out what was going on with her, Klimek said in shock. At that point the husband said he was told that she has low blood a 12.7% packed cell volume (PCV)”.
” I said why can’t you use ultrasonic Tools and scans to see what’s going on, instead of cutting her open again and allowing her lose more blood which is already a problem”.
“By the time I got to the hospital, they already cut her open for the second surgery, they opened her thorax from under the breast down – and finally, they found nothing after 4 hours of operation.”
“I was an emotional wreck by this point.” I never gave consent for the second surgery, nobody in my wife’s family did, Arlindo told Per Second News. “Until this moment cause of death is still unknown”.
“I don´t understand this doctors and hospitals. This “Photoshop certificate Doctor” killed our best friend and for this he must be imprisoned for life and the MART Hospital shut down for ever. And none of this doctor or nurses must practice in this profession again, said an angry Klimek, friend of the husband.
” I am from Germany and when this things happen in Germany or Europe, the government conduct an investigation, I hope, this will be the same here, he asked.
“Now I can understand, why your president went to medical check up outside of Nigeria, he concluded.
The husband of the deceased claim that one Dr Moses butchered his wife to death, “yes Moses killed my wife”. ” After they noticed their mistake they refuse to tell me details, I called them continuously and they won’t pick my phone”.
Per Second News reached out to the hospital and the chief medical director, Prof Oladapo Ashiru, said the Mart medicare gave the deceased high quality care with experienced professionals.
“The lady Amaka, was young, she said she was 24 but she looked 21”. “
He said all those that attended to her from the Obstetrician to the Anesthesiologist and Nurses are well experienced professionals. Ashiru said he has well over 40 years experience.
He revealed that he was not part of the team that worked on Amaka and directed us to the consultant who spoke to Per Second News about what transpired.
MART MEDICARE RESPONSE
Dr Makewu said with the help of fertility doctors from the MART Center, Amaka Defeitas, conceived using IVF, after which we had a meeting with the couple detailing a 13 week management plan that includes C-section at birth.
“Mr Defreitas rejected the C-section saying he wanted his wife to have it the natural way, despite several medical advice from us”.
“At 37 weeks there was no sign of labor and they were still insisting on natural means”. I didn’t see them or hear from them again until I called them at 39 weeks and she said she travelled and was not around”. “They finally came when the pregnancy was at 41 weeks, after a scan no baby water was seen at that point I told them categorically that a C-Section must be done immediately.”
“We did the procedure and the baby arrived Saturday morning, except for the umbilical cord that was around the baby’s neck, everything was fine, both mother and baby were fine and we even moved her out of the theater to the normal room for her to recuperate.”
“Hours after the first surgery she started complaining of tummy ache and severe pain, despite the pain killers being administered on her, she also complained of abdominal pain.
“She was pale and we ran a test and found out that her blood level was 12.7 percent low, at that point we did the second surgery to find out what was the cause of pain”. Dr Makewu put the blame at the doorsteps of the Defeitas, saying the operation should have been done weeks before the 41 week period.
Asked about cause of death, he said autopsy is currently being carried out. But Mr Defeitas insists that it was an error on the part of the doctors to cut his wife open for the second time within a 24 hour period.
Justifying his claim, Defreitas, said he did not give his consent for the second surgery because he expected the hospital to do a comprehensive CT-Scan of the Pelvic & Abdomen to get the right diagnosis, rather the doctors did a normal blood test which will never tell you if a patient has a blood clot or something more fatal.
“I insisted in scan but before I arrived at the hospital they already cut her open and allowing her to lose more blood leading to her death”.
A doctor close to the family said ” Possibly she bled a lot at first surgery, maybe the womb did not contract well also”. “She could also have had a DIC (Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation) an acquired bleeding disorder from too much blood loss, which makes it impossible for the body to stop further blood loss”.
Defreitas, a retired professional with Lufthansa, German airline opened up in a lengthy discussion with Per Second News about living with the heartbreaking loss of his wife, Amaka, an Imo state indigene.
The family are still in shock and traumatised over the mysterious death of Amaka Defeitas, with the husband demanding that an independent postmortem be done on the remains of his wife.
“We travelled all over the world together and looking forward to spending our lives in Nigeria, its so sad, I don’t know what to do next”.
Speaking with Per Second News Dr Tiffany Jones, a US based obstetrician, said the case of the late Amaka Defreitas, is both pathetic and curious, wondering the rationale for making her go under the knife within 24 hoursafter the C-Section. She said the most common reason women die during C-sections is bleeding. Bleeding can be fast and severe and by the time any medical protocol can be instituted, sometimes it’s just too late.
“That is why I believe the second surgery was not necessary”.
“Other C-section complications include bladder injury, infection, bowel injuries and blood clots, which can sometimes result in pulmonary embolisms. A pulmonary embolism is a potentially fatal blockage of the main artery of the lung by a substance that has traveled from somewhere else in the body.”
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Amaka’s husband, family and son during this difficult time.
OMG beautiful lady. RIP. Chai
ReplyDeleteThe husband really loved her. I pray he finds comfort in God Almighty.
Amaka may your families too find closure to your death Amen
Tears wouldn't make me read all of these. Its so sad and painful.
DeleteWhen people in the UK are begging for planned C-Section.
Don't I just hate Nigeria, that's how my mum was killed at Jolad Hospital in Bariga, Lagos and no one could hold the hospital staff ransom.
They just waste life's on Nigeria.
May her beautiful soul RIP and may God uphold her husband and family at this very difficult time.
But Arlindo Defreitas made a big mistake he would have taken the wife to birth their child outside the country. You never can trust Nigeria system sonetimes
DeleteMay Amaka soul rip,I felt so much for the husband.
DeleteWell, in terms of uterine bleeding after surgery a second surgery is very very important. It has saved lives and we do it here a lot in the UK. When you hear of bleeding following child delivery, it can happens within 5mins and the patient is dead. That is not the time to start doing any CTSCAN or ultrasound. Just open up and stop the bleeding (that is the teaching). In most medical texts, reactionary haemorrhage esp when a patient is recovering from anaesthesia can cause stiches to loosen and in that case, the appropriate thing to do is to go back into the theatre and open up to arrest the blood loss.
DeleteIf I were in their shoes, I will do the same thing cos whatever is causing that bleeding must be in the womb. Even if you give her 20units of blood, it will still run out in a couple of seconds. Uterine bleeding runs like tap for people that haven't seen. In mins you will lose 6litres. It is like magic.
Secondly, if you are a patients care giver, don't always argue with the people that are about to give you medical care, even when you are tensed, find a subtle way to discuss your fears, from experience, I have seen a consultant, the best in the unit shivering and trembling while performing a minor surgery. why? Just because the person is a high profile patient. It was so bad that he had to step aside for one of the youngest doctors to do the surgery. These people are humans and sometimes when you put so much pressure, it will affect the level of care you get.
The husband didn't tell us that these doctors did a successful IVF for them. Why didn't they heed to the first advice, the baby was also over due at 41 weeks. They were lucky the child survived because I can't even begin to imagine how that baby suffered without amniotic fluid in the womb. This also goes to show that the husband has been disregarding doctors advice. He also didn't state that he rejected early CS and stoped coming for antenatal care for a while and even the pregnancy lasted beyond 9months. Unfortunately, these issues are also important.
This case is a two way thing. Both the husband and the hospital should be held responsible. Listen to your doctor, heed their advice, ask questions and read up topics online. That will help you know if you can trust the doctor with your life or not. Once you have doubts, instead of staying and arguing up and down with the doctor and having him enter theatre in a certain mindset, please go to another hospital for crying out loud. Why must you still allow your wife to go ahead in that same hospital that you are always arguing with the doctor. The doctor had to even call before you went back. In Obstetrics, a day can change the outcome of any pregnancy. Just one day.
Let the government investigate this case independently and take action immediately. This is sad. Please, if you are not a doctor, you are not a doctor. There is nothing like, I am almost a doctor, that is also quackery. Once you feel that you don't trust this doctors judgement, go to another hospital. C/S is the most common surgery that is performed in any hospital. Even in the rural areas, deaths are not that common except few cases where there are either negligence or patients insists they must deliver the Hebrew way until they have complications. Do the right thing at the right time and let's see how many problems will come out of it. Then you can hold the hospital soley responsible. Instead of arguing and fighting with a driver who is driving on the express, quietly come down and board another vehicle. Any little distraction or emotional instability can cause troubles, even robots jamm.
Please, people should protest. Let independent autopsy be carried out. This is heartbreaking. Women, learn to speak out for yourselves, once your relatives quarell with your care givers esp before a procedure, please opt out and go to another facility. Now she is dead, the man wants the hosp shut down. She is gone just like that. Please don't be a subject of two elephants battle. It is better to live than dead.
But why will the hospital just want to kill her since they cured her childless for 4years.
DeleteSo, after cussing our president, you expect him to come and die untop your case. Oya nau. Why you no carry her go born for your place when people no dey die. Abeg, better focus on the matter and stop adding people that didn't do anything to your wifem
DeleteRip to the dead. But she was 24 when she died, been trying to have a baby since she was 20(4 years).
DeleteWhen should any woman get married at 20??why should any parent give their daughter out at that young age? Why not travel to her hubby's country to give birth?
Anon 11:42 it doesn't necessarily mean it was done deliberately. If he says they killed his wife then understand what he meant by that in an act of being careless.
DeleteThe ones we have in Nigeria are not doctors o
DeleteThey are licensed killers abeg
Nothing upstairs.
Mtschewww
This is really sad
Now see the epistle anon 11:39 wrote just to defend an incompetent colleague.
Nonsense
Anonymous 11:29. Thanks for saving me the stress of an epistle writing.
DeleteIt's only doctors honestly that would understand this situation.
Like I said down 👇🏼 . The fault is both from the husband and maybe the doctor.
I'm going to be castigated for what I'm about to say by the layperson's
But this case....( 2nd surgery or no surgery)
She would have still died ....
You know why??? Because early intervention tests and delivery were not done. It's better to prevent complication than to try to fix some complications which ar forward ever.
This would have only taken GOD intervention to be frank.
Añon 11:39, u have said it all, ladies please fight for your life interms of delivery, cos once she is dead, the husband must marry another woman. Her chapter is close for life. All this mouth he is making can not bring Amaka back to life. STINGY MAN y did you not take her to Germany for delivery. Go and eat her corpse, wicked man.something that could have been avoided.
DeleteAnon 11:39 God bless your wisdom! Is it by force to use a particular hospital? When they advised elective CS, why didn't they seek a 2nd/3rd opinion before ditching the idea?
DeleteThe husband stated they have traveled round the world and I am amazed that despite all the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy they chose to deliver in Nigeria while not trusting their analysis!
I had an emergency CS with one of my boys at 38weeks because the amniotic fluid was decreasing, How this couple's baby survived at 41week without amniotic fluid is God consoling the family.
May Amaka's soul rest on.
MrsBee
I had a normal delivery @ 41 weeks with reduced amniotic fluid.
DeleteFrankly I am angry at MART for two reasons, one is their use of inexpirienced doctors when it matters most. I have been there.
2. What has her age got to do with their mistake. Is it their business, a man is crying that he almost his wife, instead of telling and proving to him you did ur best medically, u are busy saying she looked 21??? Is it ur business, why are u trying to divert attention to another thing entirely. Don't let me open up on your hospital.
My sis in law went there when she couldn't conceive after 2 yrs of marriage, she was 23, instead of investigating what the problem is, they were busy pushing her to do IVF ASAP.she wen to another fertility clinic who took their time and conducted tests, they found the problem and corrected it. She took in naturally 4 months later.
Don't be suprised that this girl didnt need IVF but once they feel there's money, they'll jejely advise her to just go ahead and do IVF. MART should change their ways, I am nit happy at all with their response, if the girl married her grandfather, its none of their business. Girls of 17 -18 get pregnant and deliver all the time. Mtcheeew
Not to go off topic but if u r a pregnant woman reading this, pls always go with ur gut instincts especially if u feel something is wrong and seek second or even third opinions. Nobody knows it all.
DeleteOver due @ 41 weeks.?... a full term pregnancy is from 37-42 weeks.....no 2....her age was not a factor bcos we midwives say high risk is <18 or >35....
DeleteBia Ifeoma, it is like you are nurse Eliza, it is people like you that change patients prescription to the one your coconut head thinks is ok.
DeletePlease go and read up the definition of Term Pregnancy (it is from 37 to 40 calendar weeks). If you say 42 weeks is term, what do you define as Postdatism or post date pregnancy. So, as a nurse if you see a woman at 42weeks of pregnancy, you will give her kudos and ask her to go home and come bk after 1week. That will make it 43weeks. What a wawuuuuuuu. A butterfly that think itself an eagle.
You are challenging a doctor with that your backyard 3days training certificate. Please, you have no RIGHT to take a decision on a patient. Please please and please.
Amaka is dead partly because her husband thought he knows enough to challenge doctors advice without even seeking an opinion of a second doctor. Go and read your book please.
Ifeoma that pregnancy that was advised for an elective CS at 38 weeks is long overdue at 41 weeks. It is a miracle the child survived.
DeleteI once had a diabetic px that was scheduled for surgery at 37 weeks she came after 2days and the baby was dead. The hospital she was transferred from said fetal heart was already faint early that day but she refused any intervention. In Obstetrics when you are given a date, hours matter a lot not to talk of days and in this case 3 or 4 extra weeks. Please stop talking as if you are an authority in the medical field when all you do is to read up patients case notes and feel you have some knowledge.
Anon 11:39.. you Talk am finish . Exactly wetin my hubby Talk and him sef be oyibo. This girl death dey pain me oh. Why maternal deaths???
DeleteOMG! I got to where he said "I entered into the theatre and all her organs were scattered around" I couldn't continue again. OMG!!
ReplyDeleteMe too. Wish I didn't read that part😔😔😔😔
DeleteI swear when i read that part on instanblog i was shocked. Couldnt get the image out of my head. This is terrible. I felt the husbands pain. A child will grow up without his mother due to the docs error
DeleteThat's why I hate it when people claim they want normal birth, by all means. I had elective surgery twice cus I dint want a situation were things become too difficult for me then they start rushing me to theater. The doctors are right for saying that surgery was to be done way before 41weeks, cus my mum always told me babies that stay too long always come out with dry skin cus of the lack of water in the womb. But the hospital is sick for not checking her blood level before the first surgery cus that's the only way you will know if her blood is enough for such and provide more if need be
DeleteThis just ruined my day... RIP Amaka.
DeleteGod please protect your children 😢
Chai.may her soul rest in peace #say no to medical iotrogenesis#
ReplyDeleteMay she Rip and my cousin is really down due to chiamaka's death!
DeleteBee 10,is your cousin really down or really up to taking over Chiamaka's hubby?
DeleteAnonymous 12,17, this is a very wicked comment u just made. I hope you are happy with yourself.
DeleteLucille oil please give this anon 👇coconut oil so he/she can have sense, ensure you send me the bill.thanks
DeleteNa wa o. Doctors ain't above mistake, but why take up a job you can't handle?
ReplyDeleteMay her soul Rest in Peace
The husband thinks he is a doctor with half medical school result. Your wife stopped going for antenatal after 4 years of infertility. This same hospital made her concieve, you were treating her at home until she passed 9months to the point that the baby water finished in the wwomb. You had time to go and do pregnancy shoot. In your country, will you be declared innocent? Did you take her to another hospital? NO. If the hospital didn't call to check on her, she would have carried belle till the child turns 10years in the womb. Take your own responsibility and let the hospital take theirs. In the end, it is always the woman that will pay.
DeleteReally really sad. Her pictures were all over my Fb timeline 2 days ago. RIP.
ReplyDeleteNigerian Doctors will keep killing us.She was such a beauty...so sad.
DeleteWhat is this???? Oh sweet Lord! A lady as young as this being killed for nothing! There are lots of murderers masquerading as doctors and nurses in this country. People who shouldn't be seen near the gates of a medical school parading 'acquired certificates'. Why should child birth be a death sentence in this part of the world? Why? Others seem to have left Nigeria behind in the 10th world. Pls pls pls! If you have any medical emergency, forget the posh private hospitals and find your way to general Hospitals! I'm saying this for the umpteenth time. If you haven't had a near death experience in the hands of these sophisticated quacks, you wouldn't see the urgency in my advice.
DeleteThis is so painful abeg!
Spot on!! General n teaching hospitals are almost the best.. don't waste your money on your own death..
DeleteSo true government hospitals are best when it comes to delivery.
DeleteTell them,if u don't have money to go abroad for medical check ups my dere teaching and general hospitals are the best honestly
DeleteSo sad ... oh dat baby!😫
ReplyDeleteRest in peace ma'am.
God knows best.
A retired professional with Lufthansa fucking my underage sister! I think this is where the investigation should begin from. From all accounts, that girl was less than 24. And in your own words Mister, she'd been struggling to conceive in the last 4yrs. I believe you were copulating with this girl even before she turned 18. That is exactly where our microscope should be facing, old man. Nevertheless, Nigerian hospitals are glorified abbatoirs. Rest in peace my compatriot.
DeleteBlunt aren't u stupid?
DeleteShut up...16yrs is the age of consent.
DeleteSee gobe from Blunt
DeleteHmnnn. Blunt, I am tempted to believe you. She must be underage. Her organs might have been immature plus they forced her to conceive after 4yrs. Only God knows how long she has been taking drugs to get pregnant. That girl might be 20sef. I just went to google why this kind of thing can happen and I saw that underage can cause it.
DeleteI just pity her family. The man will make money from the hospital and go back to his country.
Girls marry early you complain, they marry late you call them names.
Delete@Blunt,
DeleteSeriously?😱
What nonsense are you people saying?
DeleteAbroad she is too old self to give birth. No be 16, 17, 18 dey born for UK and US? How old are the girls i see pushing buggies? Why did they all not die during childbirth? Most of our mothers and grandmothers married young, such thrash!!
This is devastating.
ReplyDeleteIf we talk now , they will say we are castigating the country and our doctors. I can't remember the last time I heard this kind of news in the UK. Not saying it doesn't happen but they are one offs.
And this one was a one off too. Or how scenarios such as these have you heard in Nigeria since this year?
DeleteThings like this sound like fiction in advanced countries. This is horrible!
DeleteNever happens in Europe. It sometimes happen UK, if you don't get MRSA bug. NHS is overstretched due to over population.
DeleteIt just happened to my friend at queen Mary hospital. After 8 years of serial miscarriages. She finally got pregnant and at 6months they never checked her blood pressure or her urine. She had convulsion in the hospital and before they finished in the theatre she died. They are going in for negligence. She is a Nigerian from delta state. No BP check, no urine check. Things as small as that. They only do ultrasound. Now they are trying to negotiate with the husband cos it is clear negligence. It will hit the news soon.
DeleteAnon 11:07
DeleteJust shut up OK
It happens everyday
I know someone that lost her babies two consecutive times(back to back) during childbirth because of doctor's negligence
@anon 11:07, a 23 yr old girl will be buried this Saturday @ Abambra state, same story: Medical error during CS.
DeleteI don't like MART too cos if the treatment I git from them when I went for IVF. Thet are so money conscious, giving unnecessary vitamins to collect money without first investigating your problem. I dint want to sat mire Tha this , let it nit look as if i want to run them down
It is interesting to note that since the establishment of MART Medicare, they have never lost a patient because they are thorough and professional. I mean that weekend alone, 7 babies were born there. 2 sets of twins and 3 singletons. This MART Center completed families. This was not their fault in any way.
DeleteWomen die all the time from child birth in Nigeria. I don't know how they do it. Dt was how my younger sister died two years ago just thirty minutes after giving birth and to think she never played with her health all through pregnancy and the worst is they medical personnel always get away with it.
Delete@ Anon 12 : 54 ! Owner of MART medicare, welcome ooooo.
Delete@anon 13:49, u can say that again, their doctors and staff are here defending them. I've been to MART, I didn't like their method
DeleteAnon 12:47 , I just read my gbagauns, pls forgive, I was too angry to proof read.
Delete# cos of the treatment I got.
# they
#I don't want to say more than this, let it not look as if I want to run them down
Queen Mary hospital is in London o.
DeleteMay she RIP.
ReplyDeleteMART is one good hospital, man!
Yea, but whe the time of death comes, even Ben Carson can't save the patient.
DeleteThank you. MART is wonderful, actually
DeleteEcactly same thought. One of the best. High profile patients syndrome maybe.
DeleteDeath will always look for a reason sha. I know someone who attended same sch school with her, FGC okigwe, he said she was very brilliant. Poor kid rip
DeleteI'm no doctor, but another surgery less than 24 hours after a c-section,is death sentence..
ReplyDeleteSomeone is losing blood probably from a cut vessel and you expect them not to go back to find out why she is having internal bleeding so as to stop the blood spilling out from an opened vessel... See no matter the amount of blood transfusion she will still continue bleeding except they open and find the vessel and clamp and stitch it. Shit happens especially in CS even in the US. I believe it was an unfortunate event.
DeleteThat is why you are not a doctor. If you know that the only thing causing this problem is bleeding from the womb (internal bleeding) YOU MUST OPEN UP IMMEDIATELY. OPEN UP INSTANTLY. In medicine, their is no NEVER. You treat according to what you see.
DeletePls fellow doctors above ignore the ignorant isoko ....
DeleteForgive his ignorance....
It's easy to critisize someone when you know nothing..
Trust me even your explanation he doesn't still get it 😂😂😂.
It's a wasted effort .
After 4 years and now this?😢
ReplyDeleteRest in peace Beautiful. And May God comfort ur hubby and loved ones.
That was the extremely touching part that got me pondering💔😢may her soul rest in perfect peace and may God grant the hubby the fortitude to bear this loss. Hes really hurting.
DeleteI'm just wondering why he didn't fly her out of Nigeria to give birth? So sad, such a beautiful lady gone like that, leaving her baby.
DeleteI'm shivering while reading this.. This is so very sad!!
ReplyDeleteAll these devilish doctors and their negligence ehn.. Na God go punish them!
May her beautiful soul Rest In peace!
Don't generalise, when next you fall ill, travel to abroad, don't patronise devilish doctors else you won't survive.
DeleteGet your slimy self outta my comment twerp!

ReplyDeleteProf Ashiru is supposed to be a renowned experienced Doc, who are these quacks he hired in his hospital.
Her looking young at 21 or 24 of what use it that in their statement please. People get married at 19/20 have babies and nothing goes wrong.
That's why I cant deliver in this country. The man should just have taken her to Germany for delivery since they can afford it.
Very sad story.
Prof Ashiru is renowned and experienced. He also never employs quacks. He employs only Consultants in the OBS-GYN and constantly trains his staff in general.
DeleteI think that 2nd surgery wasn't necessary. SOme Doctors are not clean and its only God that will keep helping us. SO sad
ReplyDeleteThat Doc Moses be like evil DOc....
Yes it was necessary. Mind you, it was NT done within 24hrs as claimed. Baby was born on Friday morning, exploratory surgery was done Saturday evening. Dr Moses is not evil at all. He is an experienced Consultant OBS-GYN who wanted to save a life. Not his fault at all. Just being the fantastic doc he is
DeleteYou are just an idiot! How else will they stop a bleeding vessel if not by opening up again? When you don't have idea of something just shut up
Deletei dont wamt to believe that staff of the hospital are here. Not just being here but insulting people. This act will not save you. ou people aregoing down. common delivery you cant deliver.
DeleteSo sad 😔
ReplyDeleteThis is very sad, gosh... Heartbreaking sef
ReplyDeleteSo pathetio
ReplyDeleteMay the Lord console her family and keep her son
Negligence!
ReplyDeleteDefine it.
DeleteOh My God!!! Nigerian hospitals have killed so many people, God cant they have a body that check that hospitals are up to standard? this is so unfair. A friend recently lost her mum due to a quack doctor's mistake (Government hospital). She had TB so they said and they gave her overdose, this woman had sores from head to toe because of the medication and eventually lost her life.
ReplyDeleteSame with my mum, common BP they gave her overdose, shes been coughing for 5 months nonstop, i don't understand, thank God for medical doctors inlaws. Do these guys buy certificates???
my dad nko, they prescribed strong medication cause he had pain o, he had sore on his chest and at the same exact place at his back, it was so bad that his clothes stuck to it we forcefully tear it off from the sore and it will bleed. If i ever get into government, health care is my primary goal. I will ensure all these yeye hospitals are shut until they are up to standard.
I am really afraid of naija, terrified of visiting, though i miss the place but gosh i think i will pass.
You are just a big liar, tell us your mother was immunosuppressive. Overdose of TB drugs ko!
DeleteDoes your mum have HIV? That's the only feasible definition. Africa has a very high rate of HIV/AIDS but yet no family members will ever accept their own died of AIDS. Who are those people that die everyday from AIDS? Doctors kill all of them. A normal person cannot just stay and be taking TB drugs like that. Only laymen will believe that. Better start taking your own drugs early.
DeleteIgnorant is a problem indeed, look at what u write here. SMH Nne ur mother was HIV positive

ReplyDeleteNa wa for Nigeria o! Things that are just routine in other parts of the world is a gamble with life in Nigeria. Every single aspect of life from going to the doctors, travelling, eating, sleeping, sex can be hazardous to life.
ReplyDeleteI can never put to bed in Nigeria, too many careless, mean people here, I will never, never trust a Nigerian doctor with your life, I had one experience in the past though not childbirth but after that I swore never to do any serious thing in a Nigerian hospital.
ReplyDeleteGreat decision dear, life is irreplaceable but we that can't afford it, how we go do? ... Let me come and be going o
DeleteShut up and let's hear word. Nobody ask you.Fool.
DeleteGud4u.
DeleteBuh mind u,death can happen anywhere.
I had a family friend dat died last year in d us after delivery (twins)she is d owner of image n soul shops at ShopRite surulere.
#Restinpeacealhaja😞
And ur mama born u in Nigeria, did she die? ,remember keffe didn't die in Nigerian hospital Na American hospital she die ooo. It can happen anywhere,
DeleteThe girl is an ogbanje that's what's she sign b4 coming to dis world getting married, dying d day she give birth Dts why she stayed for 4yrs ooo cos younger girls get pregnant sharply.
Unprofessional Doctors full Naija ooo.Dint be surprised there were no 90s consultants in that theatre.Wonder why she dint give birth in abroad.May her soul RIP.
ReplyDeleteWhat you now don't realise is that the new doctors that are in constant training are even more reliable cos they read current stuff and do surgeries on daily basis, consultants come in once in a while. Medicine is the more you do the more you know and the less mistake you make. Once you reduce the amount of time you enter theatre, you automatically start losing skills. If you like let white hair grow on your finger nails.

ReplyDeleteRIP
ReplyDeleteAwwww, so very sad.....After all the waiting years......why na......but God knows best.....smh
ReplyDeleteI couldn't sleep cos of this story I read yesterday.. I dont know the lady but I felt really terrible.. She didn't deserve such death...
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThis report has damage MART reputation. One such incident happened there last year too but somehow they wriggled out of it. Lets hope they will be investigated now......how on earth will you give a woman who just put to bedthru CS 5 bottles of water.......gosh.....
ReplyDeleteThere is no they would have asked her to take or even given her the bottles of water to drink post operatively. I did my 2nd CS there and I was not given anything to eat or drink for the first 24hrs. I have friends too who have given birth over the years in MART Medicare without issues. So where did the bottles of water come from? As painful as her death is, a lot of misinformation and slander has been going round.
DeleteIf you you enter the labor and delivery room and come out alive with your 👶.... Praise God ooooo
ReplyDeleteOlorun ese ooo
May her soul rest in peace
as in enh. thank God for his grace and mercies .
DeleteAmaka RIP, my heart goes out to her family
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry Chiamaka died, but her death was definitely not as a result of medical negligence. This story is a BIG lie. MART Medicare is a world class hospital. I had my second baby there and the professionalism is top notch. There is more than meets the eye to this.
ReplyDeleteYou better shut up
DeleteThe fact that yours was successful does not rule out the fact that there was an error with Amaka's.
One more thing BE GRATEFUL.....
U shut up, ignorant fool. MART Medicare has NEVER lost a patient in its history. That is why me and my friends use them regularly. And of course, I am grateful to God and Prof. Ashiru, the CMD of the MART Group, for employing such a great team of medical professionals
DeleteBrown sugar why would u tell her to shut up. Doct who made tried getting you preggis by Gods grace and ivf told you to come back for cs early and you refused, now there's a p whose fault is it. My two kids are from cs and I was there at 38weeks and 37weeka respectively to get them out so ofcourse the doct knows better. Abeg that hospital is as good as nisa premier in abuja and they don't just have death cases like that. Speak of what you know, someone brought her own experience and you are saying she should shut up. Did you buy land on Stella's blog
Delete@brown sugar,
DeleteWhy d insult Kwa?
Last time I checked opinion is like asshole n every1 is entitled 2 one...behave jooorrr!😠
That's what she agreed with her Ndi iyiuwa, her destiny Ndi ome Ngwa Ngwa
DeleteSo shocked, there are always 2 sides if a story. Firstly she conceived through IVF and according to the doctor he suggested CS as at when the pregnant was due for delivery, the husband insist on natural birth to bad. Same thing that happen to my aunt, she was operated on due to fibriod after about a year she conceive and was advice by the doctor that she can only deliver through CS the husband insist on natural birth and took her to another hospital, after she deliver to a baby girl through the natural way she started bleeding and died.
ReplyDeleteWomen sef. It's your life what's all this my husband insist nonsense
DeleteAt the end of the day, husband go dey dey talk nonsense, the wife is gone.
DeleteEyeah.
DeleteAnd I bet my fine cheeks Ur aunt husband would av remarry now.
RIP cutie. Thank you all for helping thank God on behalf of my family. Lovemejeje and co una weldone.
ReplyDeleteSend your account to Stella. Ok
DeleteRest in Peace
ReplyDeleteGod have mercy!!!may her soul rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteI totally agrre wt Mr Freitas(husbands name?)
ReplyDeleteI dont know why they took her in for another surgery within 24hours wtout having a clear diagnosis or reason to go in.they should have done comprehensive pelvic and abdominal scans...
Medicine is so delicate...Yes i am a dr.i think i understand the doctors' rationale for going in a 2nd time, especially wt how expensive ct scans are and the delay that would occur if they had to send her out to get them but ethically that is what should be done.i dont practise in Nigeria but i believe niherian doctors know what to do...their hands are just really tied.In thd united states and u.k,ct scans are done routinely under 30minutes...Not so in Nigeria..
Sad story
I agree with both the doctor and the husband . A woman who was 41 weeks and was advised to do an elective CS early .. the husband should have brought her in time
DeleteBecause DIC( disseminatied intravascular coagulation) is more likely to have started).
If she was bleeding .. the doctors like you said should have done proper investigations to ascertain the cause of bleeding.
Even a Clothing profile test should have been done earlier with INR.
But in summary this is an inevitable complication and was a tough one honestly . I will reserve my thoughts for now till the autopsy result is ready.
@ Anon 11:58!...Dr indeed! 😾 with your poor punctuations and so on😉
DeleteDoctor indeed! You have a patient who is having severe abdominal pains after surgery , with a pcv of 12%, and all you want to do is start doing abdominal scan to show u bleeding artery abi? Us doctor.
DeleteMy dear doc, I don't know the medical school you graduated from that will be doing CTSCAN in this kinda obs emergency for a patient that doesn't have Head injury.
DeleteYou already know that her pcv is falling, way below what you had before surgery and atleast with the estimated blood loss plus 2pints of blood post operative.
Please it shows she is still bleeding ACTIVELY and the only source has to be to rule out any active bleeding. Find the source and clamp it. That is the only reasonable thing to do. You will take to scan and then she dies inside there. You don't have to waste in this situation but to do an emergency exploratory laparotomy. Infact, the scar/ tear should be a longitudinal scar from (tearing from below the chest down) to give enough space for visualisation. Cosmesis is not what you are thinking about but you have to create room to see everything under proper lighting. Remember that insurgery, everything is red to laymen like her husband. About her organs scattering everywhere, where else do you expect them to keep them? You eviscerate (bring it out) the womb to have a better look. Push the intestines one side if it will disturb, that is what doctors NORMALLY do. That one is not a point to score anyone low.
Oh my God, really sad 😔 here
ReplyDeleteRip
#essylyn
Its a pity amaka die just like dat..she was my cousins bunky..she got married at 18
ReplyDeleteR.I.P pretty, may God console your loved ones and watch over your new born
ReplyDeleteThe Mart Medicare I know is not the same painted here. I had my first baby in this hospital through CS and I received quality and professional care. I can vouch for the Doctors and Nurses working in this institution as skillful and well trained. It is a pity to hear this kind of news. Something beyond the ordinary must have happened. RIP. May God grant her family fortitude to bear the loss.
ReplyDeleteEwo@my wife is not a cow.so sorry for your loss o.odiegwu
ReplyDeleteStill in shock over her death, can't get her off my mind. makky as I normally call her, I missed you so very much, it's really hard to say goodbye. She was my classmate and a friend back then in high school. May her kind soul keep resting in the Lord, Amen.
ReplyDelete*sobs*
This is so painful, I still miss you makky my dearest friend and sister from another mother. Death why? Why her? Oh God.
ReplyDeleteoooh Lord what a sad story.
ReplyDeleteRip chiamaka. I dont trust all these our half baked naija doctors rara not after the incident i had last year december that nearly cost me my life. I was in serious pain and couldnt even stand. The doctor was just helpless looking at me and asking stupid unrelated questions. if not for the timely intervention of mummy kate my mothers best friend who was a retired nurse and asked that i should be taken home, i would have died in ATBUTH. After series of test, scan and xray na for house we go do treatment. My bum bum suffered as a result of injections, i had plenty drips that i eventually lost counts, my arms was sore due to drips and multiple injections, i eventually healed. A retired nurse did what those stupid young doctors could not do.
I still thank her for being a wonderful mother/personal nurse. Na she go do my omogwu once i pop this baby am carrying.
*hangs leg on the wall*
Keep patronising quacks. Tomorrow you will come up with stories. I am sure the girl was patronising one quack nurse since she stopped going to the hospital. If you know you don't have money to go abroad, better shut up and go to a govt hospital and also respect yourself as you are there.
DeleteWho is this akuya vomiting rubbish under my comment? step aside bfor i elbow you this hot after.
Delete*hangs leg on the wall*
CS in most Nigerian hospitals is a death sentence that is why most people reject it like a plague.
ReplyDeleteI shed tears reading this story. My tears are out of pity for this young lady and family and also from memories of my experience in the hands of a private hospital during my own CS delivery six years ago. I died and rose again by His grace and I'm still trying to concieve since then.
Everything was normal until the day of delivery. I laboured for about 12hours when the doctor now induced me with drip. The pains quadrupled, I was in hell. My water broke but I was still in 3cm dilation. After sometime, Emergency CS was recommended and I was wheeled into the theatre. During the operation they said I opened my eyes but I was actually unconcious of what was going on. I was gone already. I later regained consciousness in the ward and discovered I was cut from my navel down to the top of my private part. I was in serious pains and very weak that all I silently prayed for was for God to let me live. At a point I looked at my child and felt pity for him thinking I was going to die. 5days after, I was still in pains, my relatives looked at me helplessly lying on the bed and shed tears, a test was conducted and I was said to have low pvc and a blood transfusion was recommended. It's such a long story. The wound was infected and a gaping hole was in my stomach, I had urinary tract infection, I couldn't walk well for one month, and so on. Thank God I survived with a long scar on my stomach and my child also lived. Today, I'm still trying for another child.
The Mart Medicare I know is not the same painted here. I had my first baby in this hospital through CS and I received quality and professional care. I can vouch for the Doctors and Nurses working in this institution as skillful and well trained. It is a pity to hear this kind of news. Something beyond the ordinary must have happened. RIP. ReplyDeleteChai! So sad
ReplyDeleteSo sad
ReplyDeleteMay she rest in peace.
Women, plz always listen to Doctors when they advise u for CS. If u opt for vaginal delivery and anything goes wrong. You may loose ur life and before u know it,ur husband will remarry. Who lost?
Women be wise. Safe delivery is when Mother and baby are alive.
This is quite saddening! May the soul of the departed rest in peace and God be with her Family.
ReplyDeleteAlmost the same way my baby sister 29year old die in Stella obasajo hospital in Benin city, she had her baby through Normal delivery, the baby girl is alive, but my sister die.a young lawyer, married in October die in January.the only tin the nurse on dutie said was she was bleeding after she had the baby.no Doctor around at all.my sister bleed to die.
ReplyDeleteBinta itohan Aguele, rest in peace my love, the bad health system in Nigeria take your life.29 year old a lawyer.those wicked nurses in central hospital in Benin let u bleed to death.rest in peace
ReplyDeleteWhat a sad news..
ReplyDeleteRip dear..
May God Almighty console your family and loved ones..
See these doctors matter en! I went to a hospital at Meiran on Monday( I have a medical history) and I met with one doctor Sanusi and he wouldn't allow me say anything, telling me he would tell me his own diagnosis, I asked if he wasn't supposed to ask about my history or record and he said I should not worry. I complained about blurred vision and total blindness at times and he said its cos I have big eye balls thus images form at the side of my Retina instead of forming in front, when I complained about numbness of the left part of my body, he said it must be due to the kind of work I do(ask me which work I dey do😒)he then said I only need glasses for my eyes. Nobody told me before I left his office and went home
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 17:05... if what you say is true you need to see a neurologist in a teaching hospital and don't take my advice lightly.
DeleteNigeria Doctors full this post defending their incompetence. Nigeria Doctors are killers..
ReplyDelete80% of deaths in Nigeria can be prevented.
Wrong hasty generalization.
DeleteI bet it was atraditionalist that gave birth to you. If you have ever been to a doctor in Nigeria for treatment, may you not live to see the light of the day next time you ever go to any hosp. Fool.
DeleteIt is well
ReplyDeleteOmg, I know this guy, we used to be friends;very nice guy. We lost contact after he got married. Sorry for your loss arlindo. Naija sef, smh. Rip Mrs
ReplyDeleteSomething tells me you are happy.
DeleteYou can tell he's state of mind just like that. Are you a winch?
DeleteI read the narratives of both the woman's husband and Mart medical.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why some Nigerian private hospitals always have a defense for their gross incompetence. Look at the narrative of the hospital, they started by telling us about how she did IVF (Is that necessary?what exactly is their point) ,then they proceeded to tell us that the lady looked 21 (Do you have a machine in your hospital that can tell someone's age?)
Let's imagine she is 21 years, is she not in the best age and shape of her life to give birth through vagina than CS? What was your reason for asking her to give birth through CS(you didn't tell us that). Most private hospitals in Nigeria advises their client to have a baby through CS not because they have some complications that would warrant that but because they want to make extra money. You don't perform surgery on someone except it is absolutely necessary, same way you don't give a patient injection except it is required.
Delayed fertility does not mean she should take the route of CS. A lot of women who went through IVF gave birth through vaginal delivery except if they are advanced or there is a valid medical reason for such.
Nigerian Medical Association need to review the criteria for dishing out licences. We have lots of drunk surgeons performing surgery on patients. We have Surgeons with unsteady hands performing surgery or do I need to talk about the gynaecologist giving out drugs for pregnant women to take without explaining to them what the drugs are for and the possible side effect.
It doesn't matter whether patient's have died in the hospital or not, the fact is that a patient just died. You don't have to wait until more lives are lost before something is done. They should be thoroughly investigated and corrected. Even if a patient has a terminal illness, if it is managed effectively, the patient can live till old age.
KING XOXO MYSTERY
Yes I read both narrative as well. They said, he said business. I saw holes in both of them
DeleteKing XOXOX thank you. I have been wondering the reason for the early advice of CD. I can understand it being offered for post date....but IVF doesn't automatically equal CS.
