The Federal Government has extended the timeline for repair work on the runway of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, by another 18 weeks.
According to Daily Trust, a highly-placed official in the presidency, revealed this in a statement made available to State House correspondents on Sunday.
The official, who pleaded anonymity, said the second phase of the upgrade work would be done at night, to avoid disruption of flight schedules.
The Abuja Airport was shut down on March 8, 2017 and is expected to be re-opened on April 19.
“After the Abuja Airport reopens for operations on April 19, upgrade works on the runway will continue for another 18 weeks. This second phase of upgrade works on the runway will be carried out at night, with no disruption to flight schedules,” the official said.
Reports showed that over 43,000 passengers passed through the Kaduna Airport in its first 11 days of operation, as alternative to the Abuja Airport.
The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport was temporarily closed from midnight on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, to enable the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), carry out major rehabilitation of the runway at the airport.
FAAN’s managing director, Saleh Dunoma, appealed to airline operators, passengers, airport users and other stakeholders to bear with the FAAN, saying it would continue to upgrade facilities at the nation’s airports.
He explained that this was in compliance with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) annexes.

DeleteYes they want to bring in more devpt to kaduna, that's why they shut down the ABJ airport. Apc & buhari are the more you look the less you see.
DeleteThey should just take the time they need
ReplyDeletemore extension, more money, and at the end it will still be Abuja Airport.
ReplyDeleteWe all knew six weeks was just a joke. In this country? It was only whenthere was repairs on 3rd mainland bridge like three or four years ago that the contractors finished in good time. Even before their scheduled date.
ReplyDeleteWe've been enjoying this airport closure o. Our light is connected to the airport line, we normally would have constant light a day a day off, it was later increased to 2 days on a day off when the airport closed. Now the light no dey off at all. If not that that Kaduna airport is too far, I for say make the airline kukuma remain closed sef.
ReplyDeleteI guess they always knew how long it would take, the six weeks was just to stem panic.
ReplyDeleteNigeria, a country where a set date never works.
ReplyDeletethe only date that works here are wedding and funerals (wedding sef na if fuck up no dey)
Shame on the leaders of this country.
Yall didn't read the article. The airport will open on April 19th with upgrades done at night. So no need for Kaduna if you are flying during the day.
