Court Injunction Stops Okafor's Law Premiere

Following an injunction which was served Omoni Oboli, Dioni Visions and Filmone Distribution, the scheduled screening of "Okafor's Law" didn't hold.

Addressing the invited guests at the IMAX Cinema, the filmmaker broke down in tears as she stated that the script and movie were created '100 %' by her.

She further described the court injunction as bullying and abuse of the law.

She was supported on the stage by MO Abudu, Kemi Lala Akindoju, Chioma Chukwuka, Ufuoma McDermott among others.

"I'm so honoured that you're all here today, thank you so much. Thank you for honouring me, thank you for your support over the years, thank you for always being there when I call. It means so much to me, and I don't take it for granted. "

"I was really looking forward to showing you the movie tonight. The movie screened at Toronto International Film Festival, Stockholm International Film Festival and in America, but all that is nothing if Nigerian people don't see it. "

"Unfortunately, we can't show the film. At 5pm, we got an injunction from the court not to show this film. I'm sure some of you heard some allegation sometime ago, but, my story, my script, my movie, was written 100% by me. You can take that to the bank."

What anybody says, what anybody does, it's all a lie. I don't know why this is happening, I work hard. "

"It's a shame that anybody would want to stop this. I mean, it has been a long process, we shot this movie last year, we have gone everywhere, we have put in so much money, publicity and everything, and some people are trying to stop it. "

"God is on the throne and it's fine. It will all come out in the wash. This is not going to stop me, I'm going to keep pushing. "

"I could have gone ahead to show this film today, but, I'm a law abiding citizen and I have to follow the law, unfortunately.

"I believe that it is bullying, I believe that it is abuse of the law, and we are going to take this up. "

The movie which was scheduled to premiere on March 24, 2017, at IMAX Cinema, Lekki Phase 1, was halted after Oboli, Dioni Visions and Filmone Distribution were served an injunction to stop the premiere and nationwide release of the movie.

The complaint was filed by Raconteur Productions. And, if the actress had proceeded with the premiere, she would have been guilty of contempt of court.

The complaint is related to the copyright infringement accusations leveled against Oboli in 2016 by Canada-based writer, Jude Idada.

    4. Anonymous 18:43, it's a tad crass to use derogatory words on a person just because he/she made a grammatical mistake, without correcting the person. Can't you pass your message across with a little grace or is civility far beyond your reach?

You mustn't like her blog persona, perhaps you find most of her comments infuriating. Still, it doesn't justify your malicious criticisms. Cuss her out, if you are so inclined to, but the least you can do after such a juvenile outburst, is correct her. You should take your own advice too, we all learn everyday. By the way, it's "English", not "english".

Eka, honey, the right expression is "looking forward to SEEING the movie", and not "looking forward to SEE the movie". You're welcome.‎

Truth be told, i'm a fan of omoni oboli, and i try in my little way to watch her movies, though she knows how to do unnecessary hyping. Now on okafor's law, i still have the feeling that she stole the script, though i might be wrong. Go and check jude idada's previous work and you'll know why i feel so. if only she cleared the air since the call out as at sept last year. but she choose to ignore. omoni just give credit to whosoever deserve to....

Let her go and settle herself in or out of court and stop the pity party.

U don't just steal ppl's work like that and cos is Nigeria, nothing will happen. She was going to make millions from that movie so what's 750k to settle the guy?

  16. Why is omoni oboli playing the victim card, these celebrities are opposite of what they preach, you preach against piracy but you are here stealing someone else intellectual property, in the western world, omoni will be regarded as a thief!, celebrities knw they have a wide fan base and they use it to bully the not so powerful, reason is, their fans are gullible, not exposed and are uneducated. Your fans can only fight for you on social media not in the court room. Stop the cry cry thing, btw, you know there is pending controversy over the movie and you still went ahead to plan for the premiere, you are intelligent but not smart.

Calling him a sadist because he knows his right ? Yinmu.

  18. There is no way someone will just serve you a court injunction for nothing. Copyright infringement is taken very lightly in Nigeria. This guy called you out and totally ignore him, what was she thinking. She better settle out of court, court cases take forever in Nigeria

  19. l hope the settle this issue, enemies of progress everywhere

  20. lol, I remember the dude from last year. omoni called his bluff. I have a feeling this guy has a case and that he has had dealings with omoni in the past, else he wouldn't have the liver to file for an injunction. anyways, all the best to omoni.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Since the issue had been there since 2016 and hasn't been sorted out, then the guy has a right to resort to legal means to protect or ascertain his rights.

Emotions aren't solutions for legal things.

  22. Jude is a great screen writer….i think she should have spoken to him or even add him as a creative director or acknowledged his contributions….you are dealing with people who do things the right way omoni lol-this is a lesson to all….atleast he's not a politician you want to off pant for lol

    1. You are right, we crave for Western right but we are not western in our dealings, i stopped liking her since she go open breast for Aso rock. The only thing our nollywood people copy from Hollywood na only fashion and nudity, they refuse to copy good content, originality, smartness and good script writing.

    2. I have 4given her o
But that her breast opening thing upset me soooo much I stopped taking her seriously. How can a married Nigerian woman with kids go and see the president of her country with her boobs exposed??? Disrespectful to herself as a woman. She should have been classy but decent. Disrespectful to her hubby. Infact, she no send the guy. Her kids nko? They will see those pics in the next 5 years and wonder if it was a stripshow. Then Jonathan nko, we're you trying to seduce him?
      Anyway, e don pass ....
Now this, please sort the guy out and do your premiere.

In her defence, it was towards the end when Omoni said there will still be an after party and everyone cheered, that was when she smiled. If you notice in the picture, others were clapping and the guy behind was also smiling...

  28. Jude Idada is an internationally acclaimed playwright.

Rather than people jump ignorantly to conclusions (as usual) perhaps a little bit of intelligent background research on him and what the issue is may help? So many ignorant, blind, malevolent comments on this blog. Pheeeew!

The law is supposed to bring succor to the oppressed.

I hope this can be settled properly.

*absolute respect that after handing this over to the courts, he didn't instigate a social media battle.

  30. The guy couldn't have gotten an injunction on mere fabrication, and there's no way he comes out of the blue to accuse Omoni.
To all of you calling the guy bad Belle, stop being so ignorant, why did he single omoni out?
There's no smoke without fire, for him to go this far he must have some valid claims.
This producers and actors can be very funny. You pitch a story to them and they act like they don't like it then go behind you and use same idea to make a movie and be claiming it's 100% there's. So is she saying the guy is a mad fellow that just goes to court on mere frivolity? I don't believe her.
She will go behind now and settle and she wont tell you guys the whole truth.

    1. My dear you're so right. Besides court injunctions take long to get. It's almost the same as court cases.
First the complainant would need to convince the judge beyond reasonable doubt and with valid evidence to support his claims. Then she would have been invited into the court for a probable solution( but I'm guessing she ignored all),hence the ban on this premier.
In her mind "I'm omoni oboli, the untouchable "!

  31. The audacity of some these local celebs. The man isn't crazy, if he'd spoken earlier and was ignored, serving the injunction on premiere day was the best timing. Jonathan's era has gone and no bottom power at play.
