He also Calls for the standardisation of the Operations of Acomoran through Legislation.
The Senator Representing the Lagos East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Distinguished Senator Gbenga Ashafa has called on the leadership of the Amalgamated Commercial Tricycles And Motorcycles Owners Repairs And Riders Association Of Nigeria ACOMORAN to approach the National Assembly with a bill, which will standardize and institutionalize the association.
Ashafa who made this call at the Public Lecture on the Roles Of Tricycles and Motorcycles in transportation Development In Nigeria which took place at the Yaradua, Center Abuja on Tuesday, 28th February, 2017, also stated that such a structure would make it easier for the members of the Association to access structured loans with the support of the Ministry of Transportation and other government agencies such as the Bank of Industry.”
At the event, Ashafa who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Land Transport was conferred with the award of the Arrowhead of Transportation in recognition of his efforts at sanitizing the Nigerian Transport Sector. He also seized the opportunity to respond to the Honourable Minister for Transport, Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi’s position at the same event that the Nigerian Transport Landscape would have developed faster if the National Assembly had approved the Ministry’s proposals and the President’s loan request.
In his response, the Senator stated that the National Assembly was solidly in support of President Muhamadu Buhari and the entire APC administration at all levels and would ensure that the Government succeeds. However, in direct response to the Minister, Ashafa stated that before a loan could be approved, all the appropriate processes must be followed and that to that extent, the National Assembly was in the process of considering the Presidents request for a $30 Billion USD loan and same should be passed in due time.
He commended the association for being one of the largest employers of labour at the grassroots and urged the membership to remain law abiding, stating that “I must use this medium to advise and caution your members to stick to the traffic laws and regulations as laid down by various States in the Federation vis-a-viz speed limits, reckless/dangerous driving as it relates to Motorcycles and Tricycles and not to use Motorcycles and Tricycles on off-limit roads especially highways.”
