South East Governors Pledge Stronger Cooperation

The South East Governors' Forum rose from a meeting at Lion Building Enugu on Sunday , February 26th, 2017 and pledged stronger cooperation with one another in many areas in the interest of the people of the region.

They also promised to work closer together and learn from each other by regularly comparing notes.

Ogbuefi Tony Nnachetta, Anambra state Commissioner for Information and Communication Strategy who was at the venue of the meeting praised the governors for convening the meeting which has not been held in over two years.

Nnachetta said that the presence of the governors rather than their representatives signified a new beginning in regional cooperation amongst the South East state governors.

The Forum elected the Ebonyi state Governor David Umahi as the new Chairman and also endorsed the John Nnia Nwodo led leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo calling on Ndigbo to support them. The new Chairman of Ohaneze Ndigbo had earlier briefed the Forum on the agenda and activities of the Pan- Igbo organisation so far.

Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu also briefed the Forum on aspects of 2017 Federal budget that affect the South East and the overall progress so far in passing the budget.

The Forum mandated the Commissioners of Economic Planning in the South East states to quickly get together and produce an economic agenda for the South East while also committing to a more deepened and robust security cooperation working in partnership with the security agencies.

Present at the meeting were Chief Willie Obiano, Governor of Anambra state, the host Governor, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state, Chief Rochas Okorocha of Imo state and Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state.
