Dear Fellow Fegocolians
Please be informed that PESCUNNA 1990 Foundation as duly registered with Corporate Affairs Commission (a.k.a. FGC Warri Class of 90) on Wednesday 14th December 2016 at the Assembly Hall, kicked off its Annual Scholarship Scheme in fulfilment of its earlier intent expressed to the School as per attached Letter.
Speaking during the maiden presentation of cash grants of N50,000 each to the Overall Best Male and Female candidates of the 2016 Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE), formerly known as Junior School Certificate Examinations (JSCE), Emmanuel Utibe Ima-Abasi and Faith Erodje, the outgoing Secretary of the PESCUNNA 1990 Foundation, Paul Edemu, stated that the initiative was necessitated by the worrisome decline in the academic performance of students of the School in external examinations. He explained that PESCUNNA 1990 Foundation had already earmarked funds in a long term investment to guarantee annual payments according to the terms and conditions contained in its Letter of Intent to the School, subject to only upward reviews to allay fears over sustenance of the Scheme.
He however pointed out that the inability of the pioneer beneficiaries to achieve distinctions in the core subjects of Mathematics, English Studies and Basic Studies was a clear indication of deeply fallen academic standards in the School and called on all relevant stakeholders of the School to rise up to the daunting challenge. He also emphasised for the avoidance of doubt that subsequent payments would be made strictly to only qualified candidates as contained in the Letter of Intent, highlighting that concessions were only granted to pioneer beneficiaries to ensure an eventual take-off of the Scheme according to timelines.
FEGOCOWOSA National Secretary Ayodele Oke while speaking on behalf of the National President Chyna Iwuanyanwu that had always championed the formation of purpose-driven class sets for increased positive interventions in the School, commended the pioneer Executive Team of PESCUNNA 1990 Foundation led by its outgoing Coordinator Hector Okposo and Vice Doseke Akporaye for the timely initiative, which he described as a seed that would hopefully germinate, blossom, inspire excellence and possibly put the School on the path of restoration of its much desired and talked about past glory. He used the opportunity to call on other class sets, well-meaning old students and corporate organisations to emulate the noble gesture of PESCUNNA 1990 Foundation and institute different scholarship schemes, all in a bid to ensure that the School produces high flying alumni to sustain a legacy of excellence, cutting across various fields of human endeavour synonymous with the brand of the School. He recalled the Golden Era when students of the School had privileges of different scholarship schemes, instituted by different bodies that inspired them to excel in external examinations and expressed the willingness of FEGOCOWOSA to partner with any individual or group with laudable initiatives to redeem the image of the School.
The Vice Principal (Academics) Senior School, Mrs Edosio who represented the Principal Abiodun Fabiyi that was attending FEGOCO games at Enugu at the time of presentation, acknowledged the monumental contributions of old students over the years, especially in infrastructural developments and pledged the commitment of the School Management to do its utmost best in stemming the unfortunate drift in academic performance as witnessed by the 2016 BECE results, which she pointed out was not peculiar to the School alone, especially with the recent change in curriculum. She said the harsh economic reality of today was also affecting the performance of many students, whose parents were finding it increasingly difficult to meet up the financial demands of their schooling, thereby leading to the observable withdrawal of some brilliant but indigent students for re-enrolment in state public schools with lesser tuition costs. She welcomed wholeheartedly the re-introduction of Annual Scholarship Schemes as kick-started by Pescunna 1990 Foundation and pledged the resolve of the School to ensure its success.
