Nigeria's Sultan Of Sokoto Rejects Gender Equality Bill

Nigeria's most senior Muslim cleric has rejected a new gender equality bill, which proposes that women and men inherit an equal share...

The Sultan of Sokoto, Mohamed Sa'ad Abubakar, said Muslims would not accept the violation of Islamic law guaranteeing men a greater share.

Nigeria's main Christian body has welcomed the bill, saying its religion permitted equal inheritance.

Activists have pushed for the bill to end discrimination against women.

Nigeria is a deeply religious society with roughly the same number of Christians and Muslims.

Speaking at a Koranic recitation ceremony in northern Zamfara state, the sultan said: "Our religion is our total way of life. Therefore, we will not accept any move to change what Allah permitted us to do."

He added: "Islam is a peaceful religion; we have been living peacefully with Christians and followers of other religions in this country. Therefore, we should be allowed to perform our religion effectively."

In October, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said it did not find anything wrong with the bill because in "Christianity inheritance is shared equally between male and female".

Lawmakers say they will consider public opinion before a decision is taken on which aspects of the bill to approve and which aspects to reject.

In March, Nigeria's senate rejected an earlier version of the bill, saying it was incompatible with Nigerian culture and religious beliefs.

  8. This is the problem we have. Its the same way that senator yerima rejected the bill that would have put the limit of marriage for girls at 18 and subsequently ended child marriage in nigeria.
The constitution recognizes religion but religion doesnt supercede the constitution as far as the law is concerned.

  9. This inheritance is it family or government?
In a family there is always a will from the parents
so why poke into family matter?
Or is the govt about to share Naija property to individual?

  10. I truly respect islam. A religion that preaches decent dressing, something the Christians are losing but some of their laws are downright condemnable.

Equal rights isnt such a terrible thing. What are they afraid of?

    1. Do u know what they have under that so called decent dressing, the likes of borehole, drug induced pricks. Christianity preaches it too but I tell salvation is not by force.

    2. I agree with Ngbor...when you see some so called Christians going to church on Sunday especially these new generation churches, the first question that comes to mind is...if she wears this to church, I wouldn't want to see her going to a party/club.

@ Oluwatoyosi...even if they're queen whores & 1st grade drug addicts, they have the decency to "hide it". Every dog eats shit but the one that eats & leaves shit crumbs on its mouth & whiskers, is the shit eater

  14. The earlier we divide the better for us. Southern Muslims who can't cope with our way of life here should migrat to the north and vice versa. They keep using religion to slow down our developmental pace. Haba! Everytime Islam says this Koran says this. Kilode.
Lord lugard may you continue to rest in pieces. You just brought two different regions that have nothing in common together for selfish interest.

  15. Islam has a clear position on inheritance like many other aspects of life.these positions can be researched by any student of knowledge.
There are well defined roles for every member of a family or community which would make any unbiased mind appreciate Islamic law of inheritance.
I would share just two verses of the Quran that talk on the subject.

"They ask thee for a legal decision. Say: Allah directs (thus) about those who leave no descendants or ascendants as heirs. If it is a man that dies, leaving a sister but no child, she shall have half the inheritance: If (such a deceased was) a woman, who left no child, Her brother takes her inheritance: If there are two sisters, they shall have two-thirds of the inheritance (between them): if there are brothers and sisters, (they share), the male having twice the share of the female. Thus doth Allah make clear to you (His law), lest ye err. And Allah hath knowledge of all things.Q 4v12"

"Allah commands you as regards your children's (inheritance); to the male, a portion equal to that of two females; if (there are) only daughters, two or more, their share is two thirds of the inheritance; if only one, her share is half. For parents, a sixth share of inheritance to each if the deceased left children; if no children, and the parents are the (only) heirs, the mother has a third; if the deceased left brothers or (sisters), the mother has a sixth. (The distribution in all cases is) after the payment of legacies he may have bequeathed or debts. You know not which of them, whether your parents or your children, are nearest to you in benefit, (these fixed shares) are ordained by Allah. And Allah is Ever All-Knower, All-Wise.Q 3v180".

I think this is getting too long😁.

  17. Does anyone else sense a veiled threat in the Sultan's response? "We should be allowed to practice our religion effectively." Or else what? Whatever does this man mean? Was sharia not approved for most northern states for this very purpose/s? What else do they want? Even more, it isn't true the sultan and his followers have been living in peace with fellow Naijas as evidenced by the genocides of christians in many parts of the north, middle belt states and other areas. A southern woman was recently beheaded in Kano in broad day light and all the accused murderers recently exenorated by a sharia court. What has the sultan or El Rufai or any of the leading members of Arewa Elders Forum have to say about these open wounds? Can someone tell the sultan that just as important, Naija christians wish to practice their religion effectively without further antagonism whether overtly or covertly. #GoodCauseToSpeakUp

  19. Islam is a religion of peace and love. Human personality are different so it can not be use to condelm islam. Islam place man on top of the woman (I.E all the responsibility of woman to be taken care of by the man) thus the Islamic perspective on inheritance also follow that reason.
