DISCIPLINE OF THE MIND AND THE BODY IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE even in our walk with God.
The phrase, I keep under my body, is from the Greek word "hupōpiazō". This word is also used in Luke 18:5, “Lest by her continual coming she ‘weary’ me.”
Hupōpiazō is translated as weary. The word means to beat black and blue and is derived from Greek athletics. It means to treat with harshness.
Paul the Apostle is saying here that he treats his body with harshness, in order to bring it into subjection.
Paul the Apostle is saying here that he treats his body with harshness, in order to bring it into subjection.
He says the reason he does that is so he will not lose his reward.
In the same way, we are to beat our bodies black and blue, in order words, decisively discipline our minds and bodies.
You must discipline your body to go to church even when you don't feel like it. If not, you will start faltering spiritually. No kidding here!
You must discipline yourself to operate God's financial laws, if not financial struggles will ensue.
You must beat yourself black and blue here.
You must ruthlessly discipline yourself to engage in spiritual exercises.
You must discipline yourself to serve God, keep His ordinances and obey Him.
It is time you rule and reign over your body and your mind. Subdue them so you can win.
God bless you richly with great grace and many blessings!
