One Margaret Agwu, on Friday, sought the dissolution of her 33-year-old marriage to her husband, Onu, at an Igando Customary Court in Lagos.
She lamented that her husband sometimes strips her naked and beats her to pulp and narrated how her husband deceived her and her parents and paid just N600 as her bride price when she was still 12 years old.
The trader told the court, “When I was 12 years old, my husband came to my village to ask for my hand in marriage.
“He also lied to my parents that he was a businessman and that he owned a provision store and that he lived in a flat.
“My parents told him that they cannot release me for marriage because I was too young and besides I was still schooling.
“Onu told my parents that he will send me to school after the marriage, my parent agreed and he paid the bride price.
“When I got to his house, I discovered that he was staying in one-room apartment, selling popcorn at the roadside.
“He also refused to fulfill his promise of sending me to school.
“He once punched me in my stomach and I lost my first pregnancy after a fight. I have lived every minute of my life in fear but I cannot go back to my parents because of the bride price.
“My husband absconded with our five children 16 years ago. When I called him after he packed out, he just told me that he was no longer interested in the marriage and since then he refused to pick my calls.
“His relations told me he relocated with the children to Port-Harcourt. It is 16 years now that I have not seen nor heard from them.
“I heard that my husband gave our first daughter’s hand in marriage without my knowledge and that she had given birth to a son,” she sobbed, urging the court to help her return the N600 bride price paid by her husband and dissolve the marriage.
“I am no longer in love and I want to move on with my life,” she added.
Onu, was however, called on telephone by an official of the court and he said the petitioner was no longer his wife.
Passing his judgement, the President of the court, Mr. Adegboyega Omilola, said that it was obvious that the marriage had hit the rocks.
Omilola said, “Throughout the duration of this case, the respondent refused to honour court summons, therefore, the court has no other choice than to dissolve the union.
“The marriage between Margaret Agwu and Onu Agwu is hereby dissolved from today, both parties are no longer husband and wife.
“Both are free to go their separate ways without any hindrances and molestation,” the president ruled.

Guguru selling is a business but he lied. Why did he not tell them the real business he made them believe otherwise n even lied that he lives in a flat is one room apartment not an abode? But I wonder how some parents can release a child so young like that to a man. No confirmation of what d man told them. Na wa oh.poverty don cause katakata for Naija

Ok oooo
This made me laugh , can any good come out of igando...16 years is a long time the marriage had died since her main concern should be moving on and having access to her kids....
DeleteJust passing by
ReplyDeleteYeye hungry people. Your parents gave you out to marry a man based on story.
ReplyDeleteGo home and blame your parents for selling you to a supposed rich man.
Why your own parents no send you to school, why waiting for another man to take up their responsibility ?
Rubbish talk.
Hmmmm.... Double Wahala.... Madam go ur way abeg.

ReplyDelete16yrs ago and you are still waiting for the man and the court to dissolve your marriage before you move on. Nawaooo
ReplyDelete16yrs ago and you are still waiting for the man and the court to dissolve your marriage before you move on. Nawaooo
ReplyDeleteThe woman is not serious, can you imagine for good sixteen years she no move, abeg na who open her eyes now?
ReplyDeleteOturubgeke
ReplyDeleteThose of you cussing this woman should wait until you wear her shoes.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, 16years is not long for her to wait and hope for her husband's repentance and sudden come back, especially when the man absconded with their kids.
And she might not had gone to court now to dissolve her marriage cause she want to remarry, No I don't think that's her purpose. It can be that she want to return home to her parents since she said she couldn't do so because of the bride price. Then another reason might be because she want to be buried properly after her death, cause she can't be buried in her parents home while still married to her husband except her culture permits that.
Na wah, at 45 she is pleading with the court to refund hi 600 naira brideprice? abi I no understand?
ReplyDeleteYeye woman, five kids? and since 16 years you didnt hear from him and you still waiting for court?
ReplyDeleteThe man is actually a business man nau, he sells pop corn. isnt that a business?
hmmmm
I really pity her
ReplyDeleteYou evil people are the ones who will say I hate divorce, God hates putting away and will be telling these women to pray and war room until their useless husbands return. She was probably told that nonsense for many years and our GOOD GOD woke her up from that foolishness. So if you are asking why she didnt act all through...look in the mirror and blame wicked enablers like you who have kept women from progressing with your evil advice. And next time woman relays her story to you, remember that God is not man or better put God is not a Nigerian pastor and He is so merciful that ending a dead end marriage will not have him punish His children.
ReplyDeleteI like your comment. If you live in naija and you reason like this; good for you.
DeleteI think all the blame should go to her parents who didn't give her basic education but collected money to put into their pockets while leaving their 12 year old with a peadophile.
ReplyDeleteThen 16 years isn't much to wait before taking action oh, married atv12 without education or supportive parents, it would definitely take her longer to find her feet and voice!
#PovertynaBastard
Igando again
ReplyDeletehonestly too many daft and senseless people on this blog.....so u think for this 16years she was doing nothing and just sitting down? do u know her level of exposure and the information she had when the man left her? has it occurred to you that she might just have become wiser to how to go about it.....then a fool is asking that her problem should only be to see her children not dissolve a marriage already dissolved. don't u know the many legal implications of still being married to someone legally? she has to formally make that separation then the court can properly look at child welfare and child support....this kind of men are obviously wicked and evil and i can bet you even some of his family members might not know where he lives in that portharcourt....
ReplyDeleteNawa oh
