OREDO Magistrates’ Court in Benin on Thursday sentenced a 35-year-old woman, Mrs Oduwa Egbenayabuwa to two years imprisonment for allegedly assaulting police officers while performing their lawful duties.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. RacheaI Ogbevoen who convicted the accused person, after finding her guilty of a two-count charge of related assault, however gave her an option of N30,000 fine. Earlier, the police prosecutor, Inspector Patrick Agbonifo said the offence was committed on October 31, 2015 with the accused person, Egbenayabuwa assaulting Inspector Isaikpere Alfred by giving him a slapping on his back while he was performing his lawful duty.
He said that the accused person also gripped F/No 502635 P/C Wose Azubike uniform and torn it while he was also on his lawful duty. The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 356(2) of the Criminal Code Cap. 48 Vol. 11 laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 now applicable in Edo. Earlier, the accused person appealed to the court for leniency, adding that it was her first appearance in court.

ReplyDeleteBenin people and their long names
Mamy people here are full of iniquity hence the are always supporting evil. See their comments. Police unlawfully slapping civilians and civilians unlawfully slapping police, which one is 'righter' than the other? Nyenyenyenye..I will gladly slap and pay fine. These are good officers because they could as well have beaten her blue and black and still charged her to court and increasing the charges but they didn't and you are here supporting her. FYI, she spent time in detention. She could have remained in the cell for days without bail as assault on police on duty is involved before being charged to court and most probably, she didn't come to court with that amount on the judgement day and so would have to spend days in prison until paperwork is completed. What could be more humbling than these. Go and ask her if she would ever do that again.
