Nigerian Prisons Full Of Pregnant Inmates

The National Human Rights Commission says 90 percent of women awaiting trial in prisons across the country are either nursing mothers or pregnant.

The Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Bem Angwe, made this known when he received the National President, National Council of Women Societies, Mrs. Gloria Shoda, in his office in Abuja on Monday.
Prof. Angwe said the facts were derived from the commission’s recent prison audit in the country.

He said the commission needed the collaboration of the NCWS to provide an immediate intervention in this regard.
“In our prisons today, we have a lot of nursing mothers who are being locked up with their children and are nursing these children in the prison cells.

“We also have instances where such women who are still carrying babies in prison are also pregnant.

“It is also sad to note that more than 90 per cent of these nursing mothers are still awaiting trial. These are women that should have been released on bail while awaiting their trial.
“But they are kept there in prison with their children who are made to serve prison terms when their mothers are not yet convicted,” Angwe said.

Angwe said that the commission was particularly concerned because there was no amount of compensation that would be given to such a child or even the mother that would be commensurate with the hardship suffered.

“One therefore wonders how in a situation where such mothers are eventually discharged as innocent citizens, how much compensation can be given to a child who is made to pass through the conditions that we presently have in our prisons.”

Spy Nigeria.

    3. The wardens rapes them in prison. I know someone who's has been in panti police station for 3 months now without bail for fighting her neighbor, she told her aged mom that the police men rapes her up to 3 times a day, her aged mom buys her contraceptive drugs when she visits her. Her mum said she doesn't know what to do and needs legal help/advice. It's a shame that this happens by people that are suppose to protect us. This is how a lot of them get pregnant in prison.

    6. @ anon 13:54, u are the one that's unintelligent, I'm saying it happens both ways in the prison and police stations. The fact remains that they sleep with/rape these ladies,it's happening for real, like I said I know someone its happening to.

While in other countries, after giving birth to their child(ren) the babies are then taken to family members, relatives or friends outside the prison walls because prison is not a good environment to nurse child(ren) shikena!

  9. A lot of things happen in prison ooo. Most inmates are forced into prostitution Where fellow inmates and even some free men pay the warders to have sex with d prisoners. If any inmate fails to corporate he or she will be severely punished. The warders also enjoy raping the prisoners. Otherwise how on earth can a woman confined in prison become pregnant? What about d aborted ones? This thing happens every time. Do the warders in charge of these prison not deserve prosecution? Are they not to be held responsible?

  13. Stella, your last comment is a disappointment! Do you realised there are many (male and female) innocent among these prisoners and yet awaiting trial? Do you realise how many (male and female) were just raided as criminal without any incriminating evidence and dump in prison?

Come to think of it, do you ask yourself that, at least, an innocent pregnant woman must have been raided and included among these innocent people who are dumped in the prison? or you think is not possible?
