The account holder posted his/her complaint on the 9th and I read through and wondered why a negative balance occurred.... I wonder what happened and I hope the Bank settles this amicably in order not to dent their image...
Dats how my bank secretly debits customers 100 naira for nothing, knowing pple only get alerts for transactions of 200 naira and above, we only got complains from pple who stumbled on d debit while looking through thr statement of account. Most banks are broke sha,so they ll do anything to raise money.

Happened 2 me wen i paid my schiol fee online. I was debited twice n wen i went 2 d bank i was told 2 go 2 d school that both transactions were successful. My dear with 200k on d line i sharply involved my lawyer friend after 1month of being tossed around. Ahe wrote 2 my branch here n warri n sent another via courier 2 main branch in lagos. It didnt take up 2 7days credit alert show. So try ull get ur money back its a process dear. Kpele.
From my observation, depending on the volume of international transactions you have done in the past, the bank settles your transaction before charging your account. There are times when I will have to pay for my servers but the total charge exceeds my account balance. They usually settle the transaction and give me a negative effective balance till I can pay. It's nothing. I just settle when it happens. Like them talk. It's a big man bank so dem believe say money no be problem for their customers and willingly borrow you.
Eeya. I no be big man and I've been using the bank since '08/9 without issues. Even made purchases at least twice on amazon. They call to verify you actually made the order and if they should follow up with payment. Must be a terrible mistake but the customer shouldn't be made to pay for it

Stella, most of the issues have been resolved with respect to the extra charges due to transactions carried out on amazon. I'm a beneficiary of that concession. But I think it's proper to give a bit of background. When you initiate transactions on some sites e.g Amazon as soon as it detects that the payment card is in a different currency it offers the option of paying for the transaction either in the currency in which the card was issued or the local currency of the host site for example if your purchase was done in amazon UK it gives the option of either Naira settlement or GBP settlement. This is due to what is called dynamic card conversion (dcc). The trick here is that amazon payment will offer to convert this at the official exchange rate which most often than not differs from the card rates offered by the banks. As an example if the bank's card rate is N400 and the official rate used by Amazon payment is N320 the bank will charge the difference multiplied by the value of the transaction eg if you buy goods worth $1000 amazon payment will charge N320,000 and bill the bank $1000. So when the bank receives the $1000 bill they simply convert it back to Naira based on the card rate on the day of the transaction and since the cardholder had already paid N320,000 (using our example above). The bank will have to deduct the excess from the customer. Card transactions are not settled to Visa or Mastercard in local currency but in US dollars. In addition the bank also sent text messages and emails to customers to always select payment in Naira to avoid issues like this.
Yes but the bank should have sent a notification that they will do that. What they did was to send a notification to customers stating that any fx transaction done in naira they will take the difference and then they went ahead to debit you for all the transactions done in the past before they sent this notification. Who does that. It's like passing a new law and then prosecuting people who broke the law before it became a law. It doesn't make sense. They debited me for 80k for the same thing and I have decided I won't pay a dime
Probably you paid twice , you should contact the seller to refund your money and not the bank. That's why on the site they always advice to click on pay now once to avoid been charged twice , una no dey read well for Naija.
Stupid bank. Yes he or she will sure and will win the case. The court will ask stanbic to pay her for damages. ..they will pay it into her stanbic account. ..and then the chase will begin. The struggle to get that money out of that bank will endanger his/her life. The bank is a bloody mafia in this country. My friend had to abandon the millions court granted him...for his life. Long story we will tell someday .

Since its an international transaction, the customer should visit their ebusiness unit for proper understanding of what happened. If its because the merchant charged them twice it should be resolved amicably. Calling out on what might not be their fault is not the solution. Besides people should understand the dynamics of online international transactions and not be quick to shout am being debited more. Where you don't know..ask your banker. And yes I work in a bank but not with stanbic.
Hahahahahaha,welcome my dear,they did same to me with my small money of 20,100 2007,i went to the bank branch at Ajah,then to the head office,i wrote and called till I go tired,and I stopped using the account and changed to first bank and Gtbank,so far,i have been okay with their services. I doubt she/he will get a refund. The bank is a wrong choice for banking if you ask me anyday,anytime. They did same thing to my dad,when his pension account was domiciled in the bank at awolowo road(keffi)in lagos branch,his was close to 4 million,my dear,forget that bank,they had to start paying him in fractions,until he changed his bank too. That's how i stopped banking with them too. they stole my 250k and said i used it for facebook POS purchase, i kept going back and forth with them till i got exhausted. u can imagin, what does facebook sell for me to be buying with my ATM card. Stanbic IBTC is a fraudlent bank that i know. dear posterthey might end up not giving u back your money so my suggestion just find a new bank.

Stella: Stanbic is the worse bank in nigeria when it comes to retail and customer experience. They don't care about service or how the customer feels. Even their so called head customer experience is untouched by service complaints. I just wonder why the CPC hasn't still picked these issues and call them to order
When doing online (especially international) transactions, if your account balance is not enough to cover the cost, the transaction does not go through and is cancelled. Period! Even if multiple transactions were initiated, the ones that your account balance can fulfill will go through and the others will not. There is nothing like negative balance in your account. Thank you for this post. I will not be using Stanbic Bank. I use Amazon once I don't see what I want in Jumia and Konga. I no fit shout, biko.

I dont understand the problem with Stanbic bank sometimes in April I made a transfer of 5k with my mobile banking APP to FCMB, my acct was debited but the money never got to th other end. I went to t bank to lay complain but was told the transaction was successful until I brought the statement of account of the FCMB acct, till today nothing has been done about it.
Bros...... you're economical with the truth!! What feedback did u get when u told the bank about the "lien/hold" on ur account. I'm certain that the transactions u made reference too were processed using DCC rates..... in other words the transactions were processed at a rate lower than the actual bank rate as at the date of transaction. In other to recover the shortfalls, the bank must have lien ur account to d tune of the outstanding..... u can send a mail to "ebankingqueries@stanbicibtc.com for clarifications .... dnt tarnish a bank's image unjustly!
A lien does not put your account in negative. A lien is placed for the transaction amount immediately an international transaction is initiated. If your account balance is not enough for the lien then that transaction does not go through.
Na wa ooo. A bank that can put your account balance in negative and to such an amount is not a bank I can bank with. What are they going to call this? Loan or what? In this Buhari times.

Lol. They can keep their low exchange rate for Forex on debit card if it's going to risk my account having a negative account balance. And the money is not a small amount. They are not the only bank that one can use to do international transactions with Naira debit card.
