Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala - tonight on The Stream on Al Jazeera

She’s been called one of the most powerful women in the world, a description that carries as much controversy as cache.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala moved from Nigeria’s finance minister to managing director of the World Bank, where she was the first female and black candidate to make a bid for the Banks’ presidency. During her tenure there, she became a fierce advocate for development in Africa, suggesting that business investment does more good than international aid.

When she returned to the Nigerian government, Okonjo-Iweala worked to eradicate corruption and improve transparency - a monumental task in a country rife with graft from the top down. The effort to change a culture from within left her vulnerable to criticism.

Find out how Okonjo-Iweala navigates these challenges when she joins The Stream tonight for an intimate conversation at 1930 GMT / 2030 WAT.

    1. I don't like people who fail to turn things around when they had the chance to. This is one of the many unforgivable sins of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. We trusted him and gave him maximum support believing he was going to be that leader with a difference but he screwed up big time.
Dr. Ngozi, despite her experience and pedigree allowed looters to almost empty our treasury. As the financial minister and coordinating minister of the state economy, she was practically the de facto vice president of Nigeria. But she failed to stop her colleagues from aggressive looting. Even, when Sanusi cried out to the general public that NNPC failed to remit over 20 billion dollars to the federation account, Dr. Ngozi came out to deny such thing ever happened. But it was later found out to be true.
Even after she spoke about Nigeria's dwindling economy in 2014 and the possibility of us heading into recession. What were the preventive measures she came up with to prevent such from happening? She could have saved massively to at least cushion the effects even if we finally start to experience hardship.
She had enormous powers to make a difference as the finance and coordinating minister of economy. She didn't have to be the president.
      GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

    2. Personal publicity of the highest order. Ngoni eradicated corruption in Nigeria? Who is kidding who? It was under her watch that then the CBN Governor (Sanusi) was removed when he raised alarm about the missing over $2 billion dollars? By the way, Oby Ezekwesili was a former Vice President of World bank too. She couldn't even keep her husband under control
talk less of helping Nigeria under control. Too much hype over this woman and in as much as I give her credit for her level of edication, I think she is better with a fancy position that doesn't require some tough decision as she could have controlled all those billions that was laundered during her term as the Finance minister. Is surprising she has not been arrested by now

Where the governors under the aegis of Nigerian governors forum insisted on sharing the money in excess crude account, calling such savings as "unconstitutional " can she stop the politicians who by the way are now silent with regards to the role they played, she was also a political appointee like the then CBN governor who single handedly donated several million naira to his people in the name of corporate social responsibility... She had the foresight to insist Nigeria situate the bulk of our loan in the local banks, that's why our credit rating in the international community is high
