Students of the Department of Foreign Languages of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have petitioned the university authorities over the misconduct of a lecturer, Stella Omonigho, who was acting as the representative of the department head, Austin Moye.
According to the petition, Mrs. Omonigho, among other actions, ordered a cancellation of the students' dinner and award program a few minutes before its commencement. She was said to have ordered the cancellation because the students had not filled the venue before she arrived there at 4:30 PM. Mrs. Omonigho was accompanied by the staff adviser, Gloria Shuaibu, while giving the order for the cancellation of the event. Both lecturers were said to have invited campus security officers to eject the students from the venue, declaring that it would no longer hold.
In the petition copied to the Vice Chancellor as well as faculty and departmental offices, the students demanded a refund of the money they spent on hiring the venue, the return of food and drinks bought for the cancelled event, as well as an investigation of Mrs. Omonigho for academic victimization.
According to the students, their explanation to Mrs. Omonigho and Mrs. Shuaibu that the event was a dinner and was slated to start a bit later was rejected. They also said Mrs. Omonigho, assisted by campus security men, seized the drinks and food meant for the event and took them away.
Some executive members of the Foreign Languages Students' Association (FOLSA), who tried to explain to the security men that having paid for the venue entitled them to its use, were assaulted by the security officers.
The students stated in the petition that they paid N2,500 each to participate in the program on 29 July but were denied their anticipated experience despite all preparations.
FOLSA executive members, who approached the lecturer to demand an explanation for the arbitrary cancellation of their event and assault on them, said Mrs. Omonigho threatened to ensure they fail in their examinations, an action that carried a strong whiff of academic victimization.
"She asked us if we remember that our exams scripts have not yet been marked," a member of the association's executive council told SaharaReporters.
The students reported that the lecturer had approached the student leaders afterward with smiles and offered a bribe of N10,000 to quell the growing anger of the students, but her bribe was rejected, as the leaders excused her on the ground that the students would turn against them.

''Good day Stella I'm a *** level student of university of Benin studying foreign languages
on the 29th of July was our compulsory diner popularly known as soirée which was to be held at staff club by 4:30pm our acting Head of department Stella omonigho with Gloria shaibu called security on us and canceled the diner because students had not filled the hall imagine? after paying #2500 each when we're about 125 in my level, they even took all the drinks food plates and spoons and locked us outside, and then she threatened us saying hope we know our script hasn't been marked yet??
first thing a diner shouldn't be made compulsory to pay for or attend (100level-400level)this is a department that our year abroad program is 180, 000 to togo (transport and tuition)and 100, 000 to badagry behind lagos here,a lot of us have been discouraged about going to Togo cause nobody wants to goan start soaking Garri where we don't know anyone
and it's dis same department a lecturer asked us to sit in the floor, jump with our hands on our mouth wth??
it's also in dis same department your lecturer will curse you, and say all sort of mean things and kill the little self esteem left
No body wants to report to anyone cause if they mark ur face ehn, well we are TIRED.
Tired of being treated like we don't have a say for crying it's our education we're talking about here. and what we're going through is called ACADEMIC VICTIMIZATION...And pls don't disclose my identity I wanto graduate first ''
no be small thing oh!

DeletePlease take legal action. Why are female lecturers this wicked?
ReplyDelete*Larry was here*
Keeping to time is very important to me.
ReplyDeleteI would have done the same but refunded their contributions.
Dinner is by 4:30pm now? Unless the letter of invitation stated that time, she went there much too early.
DeleteIf it's very important to you, you leave the venue registering ur displeasure and look for something else as punishment like cancelling any other event they are entitled to.
DeleteYou dnt cancel an event that alrdy strted and seize student food..FOOD!!! Food to students is something held in high esteem especially when they paid such high prices for it (2,500). She could have cancelled the dinner and allowed them to take their foods away and share in nylons.
She went overboard. Women and seeking for respect! She wasn't even the head...just came as a representative. Mtcheww
Why are you forcing us to read all...Abeg Aunty Stella...no be by force
ReplyDeleteNa her uni na, that sh*t hole.

ReplyDeleteAm calling out DR Keinde of the department of human kinetics and health education unilag. That man is heartless and mean.
He told my brother that his visiting time be it for project supervising or anything is from 4 to 6pm. Could u believe that students s will be waiting for this man at his office at that time at the end of the day he won't even go to his office or tell the students that he is not around and when u call him on phone he will pick and shout at you not to call him on phone again
He is a supervisee to my brother and I can tell u that he is making my brothers life miserable. Even the day I escorted him to go and see him at the end of the day the man appeared around 6.30pm and he knows fully well that most of the students are not living in the hostel. You can imagine. We are coming from ikorodu. Check the time/ distance from unilag to ikorodu.
Other lecturers do pick their students call and inform them that he or she won't be around so that they won't waste their transport fair coming to school but this man will not even pick ur call and even when he eventually appears he will ask u if he gave u an appointment, how will u give one appointment when u can't even pick their calls. He said visiting time is from 4 to 6pm but when u go to his office you won't see him and when you call him he won't pick. One of their colleagues was robbed on her way home one night and she came to schl and complained. Or is the one her son was nearly snatched at oshodi according to her.
It is not safe at all. People are suffering. He shld be considerate.
If he says his visiting time is 4 to 6pm he shld always be at his office or notify when he won't be around so that students won't waste their money. Sometimes they will wait till 7pm to make sure they see him and when he appears he will say see me tomoroow. What kind of wickedness is this. Coming from ikorodu go and come is not easy. And its not every body that can afford to live around the schl premises. Other lecturers provide time and listening ears to their students but for him , he will rather send u out or insult u. He should take a clue from Dr Onwuama and Dr Ogunshemole instead of punishing innocent students who are trying to graduate in this hard economy. I know the department well cos I am also a product of the department/university although he wasn't my supervisor.
One master s student was crying last week because of this man.
Pls authorities shld look into this issue cos most lecturers are not ready to do their work and some re due for retirement. He will keep on telling them that being a lecturer is not his only job once u didn't see me from 4 to 6pm then go home. Imagine. Very heartless and mean. He feels no body will challenge him because he is a member of Asuu. Stella pls help out. Someone who knows Dr Keinde should pls talk to him. Am on my knees pleading with him cos students are suffering. Some even cried last week after seeing him. The manner he insults students is getting out of hand even those old enough to be his mother. Very mean some body. Thank you

I hate academic victimization with a passion this is how my HOD in FUTMinna behaves, the first time i failed a course in that department it was her course a course that i can write while sleeping but she failed me coz according to her I put on redlipstick and fix long weaves she is always asking how long I sit to make my hair and how much.I know that God will take her off that sit for my sake.
ReplyDeleteInstead of her to go and cook for her husband or children if she has any, she's seizing people's food, ole!
ReplyDeleteThat's uniben for you. My school. Everything bad just started coming back this last semester. God help us.
ReplyDeleteThere's always other side of the story, until I hear her own side of the story.
ReplyDeleteYes o, my neighbor in that department has been crying about the 5k she used to buy a dress for this dinner. This omonigho's gist is everywhere, I heard they're gonna sack her.... UNIBEN students have suffered.
ReplyDeleteHmm,I finished from the department of foreign languages. Soirée during my sojourn never really was a night stuff. Truth is, our dept is a small family and we always adhere to the rules without any fear of victimization. We adhered cos we love and enjoy our Folsa week crowning with the Soirée. There was also nothing as academic victimization. Everyone knew everyone and their capabilities, so if one lecturer decides to victimize a student, other lecturers acts as checks and balances. I'll take this story with a pinch of salt. I hope this allegation against Mme Omonigho is not a pay back propoganda for canceling the soirée
ReplyDeleteMADAM D MADAM, Why do you have to comment with so many accounts saying the same thing...its so obvious Ezinne is the same person as UNKNOWN and SHEILA..same pattern of writing and story line. Defendant GROW UP
DeleteI find this story very hard to believe. I graduated from this same department ten years ago. We always looked forward to the FOLSA week which was very important to the department and I doubt that it will be cancelled for the reasons given.
ReplyDeleteIt would be good to hear the other side of the story before concluding. Even as an ex student of the department, we still keep in touch with our former lectures that is because we all knew one another and it was more like a family.
The lecturers of the department no doubt frown against any form of indiscipline but will never victimise any student academically or otherwise.
Mrs. Omonigho is a great person, I had no knowledge of French language before I joined the department but with her assistance and support by the other lectures like Dr. Moye, Madame Illoh, Prof. Okeh, Prof. Echenim amongst others, we all made it through the department.

As an ex student of this same department in question, I find this very hard to believe. There are always two sides to a story. I would suggest that the issue on ground be properly investigated before conclusions are made.
ReplyDeleteI graduated from same department 10 years ago and know how important the FOLSA week was to the entire department that is lecturers inclusive. No doubt , the department is known to frown at any form of indiscipline, but would never academically victimise any student or otherwise as claimed in this story.
I got admission to study Foreign languages with no prior knowledge of French or german language, but with the help of the lecturers like Mme Omonigho, Mme Illoh, Dr. Moye, Prof. Okeh and Prof. Echenim amongst others, I was able to make it through. They did encourage us a lot and always spurred us for greatness.
I find this story very difficult to believe. It is amazing to say that my old school mates and I still keep in touch with these lecturers (that is because of the positive impact they made in our lives).
Shelaih why u dey lie like dis? I b think say u don get sense... Na me john ya class rep den dey talk... U said omonigho was friendly to us abi? E dey obvious... D fact say u never craze nor me say u nor go craze tomorrow, na promise. Omonigho na evil person wey everybody body know. Wetin u wan tell me?
ReplyDeleteHey, there was no John in my class ten years ago, usurper! Just in a bid to comment.
DeleteSeriously, the comment was not referred to you, it was actually referred to Sheila, it's obvious you are the same person, I'm even doubting myself right now if I'm the one typing this cause it's seems to me that you wrote almost all the comments here. *Shout out to the greatest duplicator for life*
Delete10years ago brethren.....things have changed
ReplyDeleteThe students have no voice.... which dept ever does dinner as lunch... or seizes food when it's not a secondary school...
ReplyDelete...about d post, its true! Madam Omonigho is wicked, heartless and in fact any evil is d right adjective for her description. I was there, I saw it all. The dinner was cancelled and the students were first driven out of the premises by Madame Shuaibu before the arrival of uniben security who came in a red Volkswagen jetta car, it was three of dem. Just because students didn't show up on time isn't a yardstick to cancel a dinner. If it was her wedding will she be happy? They ate the meat pies baked for the dinner and drank the drinks, shared the newly printed magazines that was yet to be launched to their colleagues and ordinary drivers. Imagine the hight of wickedness displayed by these so called lecture claiming they are protecting the student's rights...@ sheila, just one advice for u, its obvious u were Neva a student, so grow up! ...God help ya thinking...!
ReplyDeleteFaculty of arts lecturers in uniben is a total wash out. Let me also use this opportunity to call out Dr. Frank ikponwosa and prof. Benson osadolor both from the dept of history and international studies. These pple are d demons in that dept. Always molesting and raping innocent girls in their office without fear or shame. May God help Uniben students ooo

ReplyDelete@ezinne if you were paid to protect her image guess what you have totally spoilt it the more for you to be 3 in one @Sheilah @Unknown @ezinne haba is that how well you can do. if I was the woman I'd flog you for spoiling my image the more. Bad Spokesman
ReplyDeleteLadies and gentlemen, first of all its a good thing that there is a platform like this to bare your thoughts but at the same time logical reasoning is paramount. I wonder what the woman intends to gain by seizing your piece meal, does she breed dogs that she would want to feed them with or are is food not a perishable item? You've succeeded in labeling her now you've gone ahead to include her husband! If the matter has been reported to the authorities why the premeditated assault on her family? Yet u want the world to see you as mature, well I think otherwise. If you write an exam and you're damn sure of yourself u need not to get jittery because it is what you were taught that would definitely be given to u so why the discomfort? An idle mind is the devil's workshop my dear people. For you that drafted on unilag, I must say I am disappointed in you if really your sibling is a Master's student. I did Master's in chemical engineering a couple of years ago there and it was tough but a success. Why is it called Masters? Probably you should go to Ife and get a second opinion. The western universities will hold you till they're sure that you will stand out. That is why they get the highest entrants every year. In all guys, time is the commodity the good Lord has given to you to trade on this earth use it judiciously and remember the law of karma a universal truth.
ReplyDeleteThere's always another side to every story. judging from your comments,it's apparent someone is out to discredit Dr Stella whom according to majority, is a disciplined woman of integrity. there's a price to pay for all slandering, some punishment now, others run for generations. whichever one, all of you that have spitefully badmouthed would never go unrewarded .
