The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned its chairmanship position to the South-West zone.
The decision was arrived at following a meeting held by the party leaders, including past and present governors, former leaders and other notable chieftains at the Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt, on Thursday evening.
The meeting, said to had been presided over by the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, was part of the effort at putting the party in a good stead ahead its national convention, scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt, Saturday next week.
While the detail of the meeting held behind closed door, was sketchy as at press time, a source close to a former minister from the South-South zone who was present, said the party leaders resolved to zone the chairmanship slot to the South-West.
“I was reliably informed this evening that the PDP leaders decided to settle for a chairman from the South-West.
“The ambition of some other party members from other zones, especially from the South-South eyeing the seat had been put on hold by this decision.
“It was a fait accompli and a collective decision taken with a view to zone the presidential ticket to the North ahead the 2019 elections.
“The other party positions would be evenly distributed across the other zones as part of the steps taken to reposition the party before the next general election”, the source told Nigerian Tribune.
Eeyah.
