Police Commence Probe On Alleged N30m ‘Save Mayowa’ Fund Scam, Freeze Account

The police in Lagos State has commenced investigation into an alleged scam regarding the sum of N30 million appeal fund raised for a patient at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Miss Mayowa Ahmed.

Following an order by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni that the matter be investigated, the police yesterday invited the founder of Lifestake foundation, Ms Aramide Kasumu, and two of Mayowa’s relatives, Mr Iwaloye Seun and Mrs Zaneen Ahmed, to assist in the investigation.

A statement issued yesterday by the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, Mr Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police also said the the Access Bank account opened for the fund raiser as well as the management of the GoFund Me account were being investigated.

Trouble had started when Mayowa’s family members posted her picture on the social media, saying she needed N30 million for her treatment at Emory International Hospital, Atlanta, USA.

Realising that Mayowa is an alumnus of her secondary school, popular Nollywood actress, Toyin Aimakhu, was said to have involved herself actively in the campaign for Save Mayowa fund and grew very familiar with the patient and members of her family.

Aimakhu was, however, shocked to visit Mayowa at LUTH after the campaign had generated more than N30 million only to be told that she could no longer see the patient because the family had instructed that no visitor should be allowed access to her.
The situation prompted Aimakhu to suspect a foul play on the part of the family and raised the alarm that the fund-raiser was a scam perpetrated by Mayowa’s family members.

Badmos’s statement yesterday said the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, had directed that full scale investigation be launched into the report that the Save Mayowa campaign is a fraud.

“Founder of LIFESTAKE foundation, Ms Aramide Kasumu, and two members of the ailing Aramide Shukura Ahmed’s family, Mr Iwaloye Seun and Mrs Zaneen Ahmed, were yesterday invited to the command’s headquarter on a fact finding mission,” the statement added.

"Consequently, the command has placed a red alert on the Access Bank account opened in the name of Mayowa, as it has been frozen while effort is ongoing to contact the managers of Gofundme online account so as to ensure funds raised through that platform is not fraudulently diverted.

“Investigation will be extended to LUTH hospital, Idi-Araba where the patient is currently undergoing treatment.
“The command wishes to inform all the good spirited people who had donated generously to this cause that it will ensure it does not return as a hoax and every outcome of the investigation shall be made open. “

    3. It was not Toyin that raised the alarm that it was a scam. It's Aramide of lifestakefoundation that did. Toyin has released a statement on this issue.

    4. Oh good. At least the public will be rest assured that the money is properly utilized. Please they should remember this girl in the midst of all the investigation. If they freeze the entire account, how will she continue treatment in Luth? At least for now till they decide on the final destination. The matter don get kleg

    5. FYI, in as much as this is a very sad case, I am 100percent in support of the police involvement in this issue.

The frozen account is not the only account opened to generate funds for Mayowa. There was an initial Go fund me account, plus Mayowas own personal Naira account.
This particular account that was frozen is a fake account opened in Access bank and had gotten about 30million different from the 80million Toyin and co generated.
Mayowas brother works with Access bank, shouldn't he have raised an alarm owing to the popularity of this case, even when their attention was called to it, instead they decided to Barr Toyin from seeing Mayowa. What are they hiding?
They tagged Toyin in the initial post claiming Mayowa was her fan and used her to get money, when they were done with her, they dumped her.
Once you have come public to source for funds, you MUST become transparent and give updates on what and what you are doing with the money.
In my opinion,Mayowa herself is not even aware of the fact that Toyin was blocked, she wasn't aware of the fake account and some of her relatives just wanted to capitalise on the fact that she has generated millions just in 3 days to enrich themselves.
They know her case is already a medically impossible case, if not monitored, they will just take her to Dubai and just keep her somewhere until she passes.

Who goes to Dubai for a serious ailment like her case? It is because of the sentiments of "she is sick, leave her alone "that they felt no one will even bother asking questions even if they divert the moneY.
It is very Ungrateful and insensitive of them to treat Toyin the way they did. What about explaining to her calmly.
Let's wait and see the outcome, they can still use the other funds to continue her treatments. If any of them is found guilty, let them face the music. This was the same way the parents of those cojoined twins were using them to make money and refused to separate them, lying that they were forcing them to do it, stupid Caroline put mouth. That family made millions first from Enugu.
Has anyone asked Caroline where those twins are? Are they back to using them to beg or they ve been separated. Are they alive or dead? Nonsense. I don't ever trust Nigerians, they will use a healthy relative for ritual, talk of someone that is already terminally sick.

I mean, what would she gain by trying to scam people intentionally. That girl is fighting for her life even if it means being given an extra few months or years to live.

    3. This was how they sabotaged a gofund me for a girl that had kidney problem not too long ago. They had raised the money and I think the story was that Kemi Olunloyo raised a red flag and she said it was a fake. So gofund me didn't release the money to the girl. The girl finally died early this year after appealing that she wasn't a fraud. That money is still hanging but the girl died in March.

So they have to be careful. I hope nobody gets the blame if anything happens to this girl. They won't say she was already on her way out, they'll conveniently blame those who are querying the funds

  9. Stella believe God has a purpose for Mayowa to live that is why the whole issue came out.I read it somewhere that the family want to go and lock her up somewhere till she dies.
That money is a whole lot and I'm sure they might considering wasting it and they want to play a smart one on Nigerians. Abroad doesn't work like that.I have gone to USA for medical before and remember having lot of correspondences with me to show them at the embassy.
I just want you to know the family are not be straight forward here. For those crucifying Toyin, she is more on Mayowa's side to get the necessary treatment. But the family are playing smart to save face with the video they did. They should have show us her passport with valid visa and the people following her,if really they want treatment for her abroad. I pray for Mayowa that God will intervene. There is nothing to hard for him to do,and I pray that cancer will not be the portion of anyone of us because I lost a cousin to it.She gave birth and the boy couldn't suck till she died after 3months and each time I look at the boy I can't help but cry.It is well

    3. Listen to yourself. You have been abroad for medical treatment right? Did you get your visa in a day?Money for the medical procedure would have been a pre requisite for getting a visa and that money was raised in less than 3days. So tell me at what point were they supposed to get her a passport and visa within that short time span.

    4. My question is, why did they stop Toyin from seeing the girl after the money was raised?? Why?

    5. Yes, that is where they got it wrong. According to Toy in, one of her brothers told everyone to leave, including Toyin. Everyone over reacted after that. Am really not concerned about who did what right now. Everyone should remember why they contributed or got involved in the first place- saving Mayowa long term or short term.

    1. The family of Mayowa are scammers. Initially they said they were flying the girl to America, now it's Abu Dhabi. They need to show Nigerians proof that they were in touch with these hospitals, does Mayowa even have a passport? Where is the referral from Luth? These are the questions we must ask, someone clearly want to become rich on Mayowas illness. Let's leave religion out of this, let's apply common sense. Toyin did not do due diligence before asking Nigerians to donate.

One more thing, we all know its a lot easier to get a U.A.E visa than a United States visa. I wish this actress had done more research before involving the Nigerian police. If anything happens to Mayowa while this investigation is going on, it will forever be on her conscience.

  30. Its a pity that Mayowa's life is put on the line to resolve these issues! When LIB blew the whistle, it was convenient for everyone to go for her jugular bcos they needed a scapegoat to vent their frustrations! Its always a one way traffic with public opinion. NO ONE wants to view the issues dispassionately.
    1. Mayowa's people did not play straight from the start. They went for public funds and wished to spend it privately. Its not done anywhere in the world. Public funds for a cause are open to public accountability and auditing! Thats it.
They did not count on all this social media reaction hence all the face saving videos to douse tension. Their intentions were not honest!
One day its Atlanta. Then its Dubai. Air Ambulance. No Air Ambulance wil carry a sick person without a doctor's report and a doctor on the flight! They just talk without knowing indept what they have gone into.
They pics of that young lady shows that she is far gone and frail. Its also true that we wish to fight for a loved one till the end.
Mayowa's family have not acted well towards Toyin Aimakhu. She maybe everything negative in her private life, but for this matter she acted in good faith. Their sense of ingratitide is so obvious.
For the Kasumu lady to have raised the alarm was good. People want to know joe their money is being spent. Even at national and governmental level!
We have had MANY cases in the past of people seeking public assistance dor health issues. And there is response. Pray, why shld Mayowa's family own have so much drama. Please something is not right. Haba. Bcos they dint expect that DUE DILLIGENCE will ve carried out.
Its a whole lot of mess and needless!

  32. Because the family prevented Toyin or anybody from seeing Mayowa at that time doesn't make it a scam. Maybe the girl wasn't up to seeing anyone at that time, she could have been in pain or too tired, or feeling very low and depressed because of her condition. Because Toyin helped with the donation doesn't mean she can barge into the hospital anytime she likes and demand to see Mayowa.
Nigerians don't know anything about dignity, it was probably not a good time for Mayowa and her family to see anyone and instead of Toyin to respect their privacy she decided to say it was a scam. Can't Nigerians use their brains for God's sake?

    2. i could understand toyin wanted to clear her name since a lot of money had been raised so she had to call police, bloggers and media outlet but who would blame her really..now its left for these stupid media like linda to verify before posting because its a very sensitive issue but no they dint..they posted anyway to increase traffic..
