Omugwo Chronicles -17

Some Omugwo Chronicles are annoying..lol

Great work madam kork.
*winks*.
Sorry for the long story but wish i could send in an audio i would have gisted you more.
Abeg hide my Identity o before MIL reads and summons me ,she is an internet explorer.

I thought I was going to be the luckiest wife on earth when I realised my MIL was a retired nurse and matron because I was sure i would be getting the best omugwo ever and friends already envied me before i even got pregnant.

The reverse however was the case.

Mil knew I was pregnant and was working towards coming for omugwo but I had to go in for an impromptu  CS so she came in two days after my delivery with so much load as if she was coming to an empty house ( nice of her).

She bathed the baby and always rocked him to sleep like she came for but I did the cooking and taking care of house which I didnt see as a big deal anyways.

The problem started when I noticed my baby can suck for 6 hrs straight and when I asked friends around because two of my friends gave birth around same time with me they said otherwise as their lil ones suck max 30 min and doze off.

when I complained to MIL she said I should stop comparing that kids are different, Shortly after wards my baby started stooling seriously I was worried because I was having Jedi and dey say baby gets whatever you have.I told MIL  she discarded saying there is nothing like that yet my poor lad kept stooling.

As luck would have it ,my mum came visiting two months later after she came and left 6 days after i birth my baby ( she spent 5 days then but didn't even hold my baby for 5hrs talk more bath him). The first thing she said when she saw my baby is ''why does he look malnourished'' and after two hours after her arrival she already noticed my baby was suffering from diabetics gotten from me when she opened his anus , OMG it was so red with blood obviously sustained from injury from too much stooling.

After my boy feed in her front twice spending nothing less than an hour she told me I wasn't lactating enough and had to squeeze my boobs out just to see. Wow.

I cried that means my baby has been suffering all this while from hunger and MIL never noticed, MIL has the belief babies must be on exclusive for 6 months......truth be told I didn't mind but now that there is nothing  exclusive with my boobs ,she should allow me introduce milk. I guess out of guilt of not discovering this after being with me all this while but my mum noticed in 2 hrs of her arrival made her stick to her exclusive principle claiming it not possible not to be lactating enough ,complaining  to my mum that its because I always wear skimpy cloths that was why I wasn't warm enough to lactate well for the baby and I was not paying enough attention as am always rushing off to either cook or wash or do some domestic chores rather than face the baby squarely and I was not always eating enough too .

I was so angry wondering how on earth does those things correlate? am I suppose to eat more than my stomach when DH was even complaining I was eating too much and watch my weight and for God sake I go to the market cook and do all the chores which I now saw a big deal since she sees it as a problem for my baby's health .

I was angry and told DH he said I should be patient since his mum is an S.U. so doesn't like like skimpy clothes,so I just ignored her and waited for her to leave since she was leaving in days so as to take care of my baby how I wanted.
Could you believe it was 5 days after I introduce milk to my baby he doubled. And two days after we treated diabetes he started stooling twice a day compared to the ten times a day if not more.

Truth be told MIL was a very Nice generous, intelligent and active woman because I missed as a friend and companion but when it comes to motherhood I say nada. I guess it almost 30 yrs ago she nursed a child and retired 5 yrs ago too. Bt right now I have learnt that its not by the book but by practice .

if I want to know anything I would rather go to the hospital than ask dear MIL...could you believe she once told me cough syrup ain't meant for babies when my baby had cough.

please fellow bvn who is syrup meant for?

Believe me patience made us live together and learning to yes to all she said when the answer is No in my mind is making us friends till date since they forget a mother always knows what is best for her child even if it her first time.

*Madam i dont know why reading through just made me feel you expected too much from your MIL?...Come on!

And for your info not all cough syrup is meant for babies and some Doctors will advice you to stay off such until the babies are old enough....

And how come it took your mothers arrival to see your baby's bum was red from stooling?

    3. Dear Anon.13:08,you must be a beautiful mother, and a mature woman. Poster, you sound proud and arrogant!!!! Stop your nagging attitude now, else it will affect your home gradually. Your MIL is a retired nurse, not a midwife nor a doctor. Learn to appreciate that. Your mom came in 2hrs,and observed her grandson...good. That does not make your MIL any less a good granma, hon. I'm happily married to a Yoruba man, my mom came visiting forming the literate and high taste granma. I begged her to behave. My pickin drink ago jedi tire, didn't like it(but I always smiled and showed great gratitude for nndi agbo).Be good,Babe. It pays. Nkem drops mic.

    4. She's retarded. Maybe she thinks diabetics is piles. And cough syrup is not advised in children below 2yrs of age so your mil was right.if you eat right and take enough fluids plus keep warm then your milk will flow well. I did exclusive for my babies and first time it wasn't easy but subsequently I became a pro.

    7. You just displayed plain ignorance by asking who syrup is meant for. So your baby's bum was red and sore and it didn't scare you enough to visit a doctor? You were waiting for your MIL to say so.You got what you wanted to hear. You definitely expected too much. These women(MILs) are old, we shouldn't always expect them to know and do everything mbok.

    8. Madam are you diabetic? Don't you bath your baby? That it took your own mother to be the one to see the red bum.
Is your mum a doctor to know the baby had diabetes..
Your baby probably had the stooling from poor hygiene.
      Your story doesn't add up.
      You sef nah wah.

    11. Poster you displayed a vast gap in knowledge with every stroke of the pen. Your MIL is brilliant. You need to buy her a wrapper or something nice. Im sure she trained in a government hospital.
Exclusive breadtfeeding is the best. Read up. It is a WHO standard.

Purging is not a contraindication to breadt feeding. You only have to maintain good hygiene before you feed the neonate/infant.

Yes keeping warm helps with milk let down.

No your child didn't have diabetes. He had skin sepsis following frequent stooling and your not changing diapers on time. So prolonged skin contact with faeces causes skin excoriation. Easily treatable.

No we don't recommend cough syrup to newborns. We treat the underlying cause and may give vitamin C sometimes.

Your mil is a brilliant woman. Rekindle your respect for her and stop being ignorant.

      Cheers

Next time, don't invite her...some mothers are just useless!,..
If she won't come and play an active role for your omugo, she should stop coming...
They only answer a mom for mouth only!...and yes, cough syrup is not good for babies...
Meanwhile Stella, the actual spelling for omugo is Omugo not Omugwo!...

      LMAO!

The most childish thing I have ever read here.

"She came with heavy load,as if the house was empty"

"Mind you,my Mom didn't even bath baby"
      Blablabalaalalalalalala

Continue looking for faults where there is none.
The minute you start seeing that woman as a Mother and not your Afmag stereotyped MIL,the better for you!

It is not your MIL's responsibility to know that you are not lactating,it is your body. Even FTMs know these things.

I'm glad your Boy is hale and hearty now, next time,go to doctors if you notice anything not "normal" in your kids.

Cough syrup is not advisable for kids under one yr except Nd sometimes two years.so ur MIL is right

  7. Diabetes what? You ate so much sugary stuff. YOu never enquired what to eat or not from the experienced ones and hence the jedi-jedi you baby got.
Next time stay off from sugary food till 3 months no matter the 'longer-throat.'

YOur MIL is still good but next time invite your mum.

  8. I don't know what to say about your MIL. But as a registered midwife working overseas. It amazes me that that your MiL couldn't figure out that you were not producing enough milk, your baby could have died. You should have seen a lactation consultant who should have taught you to increase your supply by either hand expressing or using a pump. Also, were you diagnosed by a doctor that your child was diabetic?
I think your child was only sucking the lighter start of your milk which is high in lactose and may have caused diarrhoea. I always tell new mothers everyday if in doubt, go see a doctor immediately. Please make sure you feed your child every few hours to make up for months of deprivation. I am thankful to God for you that things turned out fine because what you just wrote up there was a medical emergency.
    Gigi.

  9. How does a baby get diabetes from not feeding well? I don't get it. Was your baby passing out hard stool for his anus to be bloodied? Or he had dysentery? I'm just wondering o..

    ReplyDelete
  10. Poster, please your baby is your responsibility. Take care of your child and stop looking for mummy (in law) to tell you the obvious. I hate to be mean but i cannot fault her. You are the mother. No baby sucks for 10 hours. You shouldvhave known better even as a first time mum. Its not every advice you must adhere to. All new mothers get a tonne of information so use your instincts as it is usually spot on even for new mums. You for even hide give am milk sef or try pumping it out to see the quantitu you get.

I am glad you have rectified that now.

    1. Poster you're so dumb and illiterate yet you think you know it all. These quacks will sure make good money from you. Your mil was never wrong.
Your baby was either not attaching properly or she was intolerant to your breast milk (yes although not common ).

Mom in law is a trained nurse who probably worked in a teaching or general hospital and not an "Eliza " nurse.

Next time take your baby to a pediatrician

  14. So u don't know d way to a hospital abi? Even if ur MIL is a retired nurse, dat doesn't mek her a pediatrician or a specialist in medicine and does not certainly mek her responsible for something u as d mother should have noticed about ur child. If u were worried enuf for ur child, u could at least Google up d symptoms to know wat it was and den taken him to a hospital like a responsible mother shud. Not come here and heap ALL d blame on another woman.

  15. Hmmmmm, but you are supposed to know that your breast is not running enough to sustain ur baby naaa.

How could she not 've seen that the baby was not lactating well and putting on little weight? Besides the poster didn't insult her MIL, she simple passed a message, not all mothers know how to take care of new borns, especially with all these their early illness.

  21. No be everybody suppose do exclusive ooo...unfortunately naija people no dey hear. Someone will have low milk supply and still stick to only breastmilk. Children of such mothers can easily be picked out when u see them. They look emaciated like under-fed monkeys. Nobody gives them advice to supplement with minimal amount of formular. So that the child still gets all the wonderful benefits of breastmilk and still gets to be satisfied. The snag is to resist the temptation of switching mainly to formular and supplementing with breastmilk. Should be the other way round. The decision to exclusively breastfeed is that of the mother's but here in naija the nurses and doctor's want to force it down ur throat. If na govt hospital, dose uncouth nurses will curse u die! It's quite unfortunate!

  25. I wonder too. So careless you didn't notice your baby had red bum. Gosh!

This Omugwo Chronicles I'm being careful commenting because my Mum in law reads blogs, mi o le pariwo.
Twice she had to come meet my Mumsie halfway because she needed to travel go be with my other sisters who birthed newly too. The drama is something else. 2 old friends that my marriage reunited after so many years? Their own no pass review of old gist and getting body-foot massage and laughing wella.Dem no dey do any work outside cooking and bathing baby then forcing me and baby to breastfeed and sleep. There's someone for that.
    They strong pass me abeg.

And why wear skimpy clothes when your MIL is around? And all of your undertone in comments. Long hiss. Woman you lack respect and damn proud. Your Mil? Who born me chew chewing gum anyhow when Mil is around? She will tell you hooha not to teach her grandkids the wrong way of life.
You should learn to live by the moment. When she leaves you continue where you stopped. How many hours are in 30 days for Christ's sake.

Your mil is an old woman. Respect and honour her. You young women of these days are terrible.

  30. We advise against cough syr in neonates and babies cos most of them cause drowsiness and excessive sleep . If neonates sleeps too much, it could be in awkward position since dey rarely turn thereby leading to 'sudden infant death syndrome' . Your MIL is right on that one. And who told you your baby has diabetes? U said u treated it. Diabetes is not treated, can only be managed , or are u saying the baby is on daily insulin injections?
