UNN Suspends SUG And Shuts Down School Following Students’ Violent Protest

The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) directed an immediate closure of its Enugu Campus following yesterday’s violent protest by students of the university.

In a statement made available to The Leadership on Tuesday, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, Professor Smart Uchegbu said in light of the violent protest and monumental destruction of properties on 13th June, 2016, the Vice-Chancellor has directed an immediate closure of the university.

Uchegbu said “the Enugu Campus Student Union Government has also been suspended.”

The SUG had last Monday effected its directive to students to stay away from lectures to protest months of near absence of electric power supply in the university.

The students staged a one week stay at home protest to push for better welfare services including provision of Wi-Fi services in the hostels, installation of 1500KVA power generator, extension of generator light to libraries, and classrooms, among other things.

The SUG President, Emmanuel Ebuka Nwankwo told LEADERSHIP that the violent protest was a handiwork of some.....

*This should be looked into,Wi-Fi should be free in all Universities....There are some basic things which should be provided free without being told nau...na wah!!

  5. Wi-fi .Story. Na snapchat and instagram the students go de do. They will even forget they are supposed to use it for school work. Electricity issue is a general thing sha. Well now they have been sent home and their school programme disrupted. What happens next? Because their demands will take a long time to get resolved.

  6. It's only the language of protest these people understand. I wonder why people at leadership positions find it hard to do the right thing.

  9. Protest but do not destroy property. To put back in place those structures will lead to tuition hike.
As for the Wi-Fi..,.to be free? That one go hard mbok. Let them just ensure other basics.

  10. Don't mind my Alma mater, they will collect 6k Wi-Fi fee from students yet u can only browse at a crawling speed at medical center area. All the mask in all areas of the school are just for decoration. In my 5years in UNEC we protested every year due to lack of light, water etc. The administration will only suspend SUG as if they are the cause of the lack. Imagine I entered public transport from Enugu town to Ituku-Ozalla daily for clinical postings as a medical student, risking our lives on Enugu/ Ph express highway. Most often the only school coaster that is meant to carry medical and 4 departments in health sciences which includes not less than 300 students will be used by staff on charter. We ended up paying huge sum to commercial transporters. Yet u would be punished or sent back if u get to unth late. It's quite a pity I became a medical doctor under serious stress. The VC we thought that should under stand better is not helping matters. Let him relocate the college of medicine to Ituku-Ozalla. Daalu

    3. Thanks for the correction I would have appreciated if you didn't use insults, but u obviously are ill-mannered. Plus development fee made it 20k that why I paid 41k in my final year, just crosschecked.

  11. But in nsukka campus, we had free wifi in some hostels and departments, that was then though, not sure about now.

  12. Stella, I will repeat over and over, there is no public university with 20% WiFi service in Nigeria.
Most annoying part is that students paid for it in school fees.

WiFi for majority of Nigerian universities has been paid for through step B funded by World Bank.

The level of corruption and impunity in Nigeria is too much.

  14. My sister don gist me yesterday tire.

    They destroyed properties true true.

For some reason, they'd been having epileptic power supply , but having two generators which usually gave them electricity every night from 7pm to 11 pm, they weren't very bothered.

Till one of the generators broke down. They started rationing electricity. 7-9 for some hostels, then 9-11 for the others. Gradually, they started reducing the duration, till the students stopped seeing electricity at all.

They complained to the management ;no response.
SUG gave a directive for a one week sit at home strike, the school management threatened the SUG with problems during graduation.
Well, of course, this didn't go down well with the students.

According to her, the next day, three masked guys entered the male hostels, and mobilized people, and a protest began, which quickly went south.

The new sliding windows, installed in hostels, which aren't up to a month, were destroyed. Streetlamps, security doors, water tanks owned by private individuals, who had nothing to do with their situation (senseless). They almost set the generator house on fire sef.

Even visitors who came to take their loved ones home, had their headlights broken. *rme*

It's just sooo annoying, how something that would have been resolved quietly, escalated to this.

She went back home yesterday. Same with every other person. They were asked to vacate the hostel, indefinitely.

Students can be unreasonable though. The list of destroyed properties came out yesterday. Four sheets of paper.

By the time they're done paying for damages, the money remaining, will be used in repairing their generator.

    Na who lose?

That being said, most Nigerian universities are shitholes.
Even the so called University Of Nigeria.
Students have to buy water o. There's no water in that UNEC campus especially.
It's private individuals that set up huge tanks, and make money from selling to students.

Then, on top of that, they are deprived something as basic as electricity. Not making sense.

    * smh *

They've got functional WI-Fi services though. It's just not stable.

    1. Your the one not making sense. You see the riot of students, future leaders of tomorrow as a form of tyranny.
If you don't stand for anything then it's not worth living for.
If your satisfied with the improvised state of things and seeking dialogue as a way out then your on a long thing.
People are benefiting from the dilapidated state of things in universities at the expense of the students but their own children are in foreign land with good amenities. When they are back, these current students will be made to serve them as leaders.

  15. My UNEC people. They should provide Free WI-FI services to students. I mean it's high time we start enjoying these things na.

  16. Chai!
My own UNEC... Finally the indefinite strike bug had caught up with UNEC.
I wonder how they expect students to excel in poor academic and incondusive environment. The wifi that we paid 12k for was readily available and accessible though it was in the time of Prof Bartho Okolo. Light was epileptic but it was not as bad as it is now.
I just hope that it does not cost the SUG Officials their education. UNEC Students should get ready to pay heavily for damages...

  17. Authorities will turn blind eyes to the plight of students but be quick to impose sanctions when they react to adverse conditions.
