Senate Passes Bill To Make Buying Nigerian Made Goods Compulsory

The Senate on Thursday, June 16, passed the public procurement act - a law to make buying Nigerian made goods compulsory.

This decision was taken after consideration of the report of the committee on public procurement sponsored by Joshua Dariye representing Plateau West senatorial district.

The bill is titled procurement act 2007 (amendment) bill 2007 (SB. 232).

The Senate president, Bukola Saraki said while making his contributions that the lawmakers have to play a role to ensure that the executive complies with this decision. He added that many countries have used this means to improve their economy positively as the lawmakers should inject their full effort and support to make sure it works.

“In stimulating our economy, but again we all have a role to play to ensure that the Executive comply especially in the area of giving first priority to locally produced goods.

“This has helped many countries to develop when they had issues of downturn in their economy.
“I believe that having over N3 trillion available to stimulate local production going on now.
“One of the things that we have done today is also trying to strengthen the process of awarding contracts, this will go a long way in helping budget implementation.

“It would go a long way in ensuring that most of the funds are available as quickly as possible and jobs are actually completed,”he said.
He however commended his colleagues for the passage of the bill.

    8. Why are these people so inept? Is it by decree they do import substitution? These people prove to me everyday that they don't understand how an economy works.

By their own admission we don't even produce toothpick. A country cannot industrialize overnight. Even the ones that did it by force (Soviet Union, North Korea etc) it was not immediate and they suffered other consequences for closing their borders.

I don tire. Not everybody that reads book is wise.

  8. These folks should stop the importation of frozen packaged foods like Chicken, ham, Bacon, salmon, pizza, etc into the country..I see most of the packs written in arabic. I'm appalled by the type of frozen foods I see when i go to Ebano supermarket et all..something we can easily produce in Nigeria..why buy frozen Chicken when I can buy live chicken, have them kill it, skin it and cut it up for me. At least I know am eating fresh meat. Why packaged ones? So I'll answer rich mans wife.. iffahear!

  10. These people still live in prehistoric age.

People wills still smuggle foreign goods. Nobody cares.

It is painful that most biscuits in a grocery store in Nigeria are foreign but how good and attractive are the Nigerian biscuits. Charity begins at home. You have to produce good things of high quality first before expecting people to buy made in Nigeria. The worst is, no standard control here. Once something comes out newly, rush and buy a carton cos the next batch will be rubbish.

Americans dont flock to London High Street to shop, unless you really really want to. They have their own casual fashion industry that do just as well. So, if you want UK things, you will pay higher for it. Nigeria should produce good things first at affordable rates and lets see if Nigerians will not rush and buy. Who likes throwing away money.

Our goods cant compete with their foreign counterparts, so no need to resort to force. You cant force a horse to drink from the stream

  12. It's not as if people don't want to patronize 'made in Nigeria' stuffs, but the question you should have asked is , are they up to standard, is it of good quality?
Maybe when manufacturers step up on their quality then they will see the change.
