The Senate on Thursday, June 16, passed the public procurement act - a law to make buying Nigerian made goods compulsory.
This decision was taken after consideration of the report of the committee on public procurement sponsored by Joshua Dariye representing Plateau West senatorial district.
The bill is titled procurement act 2007 (amendment) bill 2007 (SB. 232).
The Senate president, Bukola Saraki said while making his contributions that the lawmakers have to play a role to ensure that the executive complies with this decision. He added that many countries have used this means to improve their economy positively as the lawmakers should inject their full effort and support to make sure it works.
“In stimulating our economy, but again we all have a role to play to ensure that the Executive comply especially in the area of giving first priority to locally produced goods.
“This has helped many countries to develop when they had issues of downturn in their economy.
“I believe that having over N3 trillion available to stimulate local production going on now.
“One of the things that we have done today is also trying to strengthen the process of awarding contracts, this will go a long way in helping budget implementation.
“It would go a long way in ensuring that most of the funds are available as quickly as possible and jobs are actually completed,”he said.
He however commended his colleagues for the passage of the bill.

DeleteCharity begins at home. The jobless law makers should practice what they preach. How many of them use made in Nigeria or send their kids to local school? Most of their kids schooled in abroad and here they are preaching. Bunch of hypocrites
DeleteYes good. D products we travel all out to buy re they produced by men or women with 2heads? Its time to improve on wat we ve n make d best of it.
DeleteWhy are these people so inept? Is it by decree they do import substitution? These people prove to me everyday that they don't understand how an economy works.
DeleteBy their own admission we don't even produce toothpick. A country cannot industrialize overnight. Even the ones that did it by force (Soviet Union, North Korea etc) it was not immediate and they suffered other consequences for closing their borders.
I don tire. Not everybody that reads book is wise.
These people are really annoying! So you make rules and regulations for the common peasant on the streets based on figments of their own imaginations abi? And not of the masses! Wicked people!
DeleteDear Senators, Charity begins at home...
ReplyDeleteMother Nature you are so right.. I hope they will also stop buying goods abroad

Tell me why will I buy made in Nigeria product? when one aba shoe will have two designers name on it (outside Gucci inside Fendi)
ReplyDeleteHehehe!
DeleteOwk oooo
ReplyDeleteThese folks should stop the importation of frozen packaged foods like Chicken, ham, Bacon, salmon, pizza, etc into the country..I see most of the packs written in arabic. I'm appalled by the type of frozen foods I see when i go to Ebano supermarket et all..something we can easily produce in Nigeria..why buy frozen Chicken when I can buy live chicken, have them kill it, skin it and cut it up for me. At least I know am eating fresh meat. Why packaged ones? So I'll answer rich mans wife.. iffahear!
ReplyDeleteLead by example starting from Ajala the traveler (Buhari).
ReplyDeleteWhat abt the cassava flour GEJ started, Bubu should've continued from there instead he became 'ngwere'.
Produce toothpick, we will patronise.
When GEJ introduced cassava flour..na we omo naija use mouth counter am including the senators wey de yan up there.
DeleteOnye kpaa nku ahuhu ngwere abiara ya ori.
These people still live in prehistoric age.
ReplyDeletePeople wills still smuggle foreign goods. Nobody cares.
It is painful that most biscuits in a grocery store in Nigeria are foreign but how good and attractive are the Nigerian biscuits. Charity begins at home. You have to produce good things of high quality first before expecting people to buy made in Nigeria. The worst is, no standard control here. Once something comes out newly, rush and buy a carton cos the next batch will be rubbish.
Americans dont flock to London High Street to shop, unless you really really want to. They have their own casual fashion industry that do just as well. So, if you want UK things, you will pay higher for it. Nigeria should produce good things first at affordable rates and lets see if Nigerians will not rush and buy. Who likes throwing away money.
Our goods cant compete with their foreign counterparts, so no need to resort to force. You cant force a horse to drink from the stream
Yeye and wicked politicians, Oya now come and force me to patronize made in nigeria goods. Mtchewwwww
ReplyDeleteThey should encourage local manufacturers
ReplyDeleteIt's not as if people don't want to patronize 'made in Nigeria' stuffs, but the question you should have asked is , are they up to standard, is it of good quality?
ReplyDeleteMaybe when manufacturers step up on their quality then they will see the change.
You give manufacturers power supply?
DeleteThey need return on assets my dear.
If the ecosystem is conducive for positive growth then there won't be outside china inside aba products.
Do as I say, don't do as I do... Let them take the lead. They should also pass a bill forbidding govt officials from sending their kids abroad to study.
ReplyDeleteThese Senators are funny sha! After they squandered #38million to purchase their official vehicles.
ReplyDeleteGovernment procurement only ba
ReplyDeleteWith this bill, I hope all government agencies and parastatals awarding contracts should go for local contents. This will still stimulate local industries
ReplyDeleteStart with yourselves, start using innoson motors and no more holidays abroad, visit Obudu etc then we will follow mcheeeeeeeeeeew.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how it would work, yeye people
ReplyDeleteAn ordinary nigerian, will run away when they see made in FRN,but will jump at made in China or God knows where country and buy those goods not to talk of the abnormal(rich)nigerians that will buy nothing less than designers for shoes, clothes, even food.
ReplyDeleteCharity begins at the top.
I wish I can just get an innoson car,i saw one today in abuja, mehn those cars are beautiful, infact they are the best thing to happen after sliced bread jor.
Beautiful cars,i hope the 3 arms of govt will start with innoson, not just buy oo,but drive it.
They should take d lead and we will follow.
ReplyDeleteUseless and lawless people.
ReplyDeleteVery good .
ReplyDeleteEshishi Uwa.
ReplyDeleteThey should even make us wear Ankara to work.
ReplyDeleteLet them too abide by the law, after all charity begins @home
ReplyDeleteIt can really stabilise the economy if that really happens.
ReplyDeleteA clear scenario this programme From Lagos to London. Chineke see Naija people sending money, some make the money here in Nigeria then blow it in other country, improving there economy with the cash flow.
Can our leaders actually follow the law they laid down?
Later excuses and reasons like am dual citizen I can purchase my things der too.
Some lame ass leaders.....
But Naija should also try improve the standard and quality of their products.
