Nigerian Doctors Tweet The State Of Nigerian Hospitals

Excuse me?

Which one is @ Buhari?Did the rot not start before Buhari became President? Are Doctors not also part of the problems?
I am not in support of the way the Hospitals are but why are they just crying out?
Is light the reason people are dying every day for minor aliment or the attitude of the Doctors?I stand to be corrected but on this same platform i have read peoples testimonies calling out the Doctors and their attitude.
A lot of things are wrong but the hand pointing fingers should also realise four fingers are pointing back.
#CHANGEYOURATTITUDETOWORK ...Yes,change it before you pin the blame on someone else.

    2. Stella dear, light is a major problem. When there's no light, oxygen plant won't work to produce oxygen for patients, ventilators do not work to provide life support for patients in icu (believe me, many have died from this rather than from their ailments with their relatives none the wiser), labs can't work to run urgent investigations and cross match blood for patients, drugs that should be refrigerated and yes blood in blood bank get warm and are eventually sold/administered to patients after loosing their potency or getting spoilt, patients undergoing surgery suffer as anaesthetic machines shut down, monitors shut down, operating lamps die. The doctor in a bid to save d patients life keeps working with lamps or torchlight which is dangerous as fuck but the scarier alternative is leaving patient under anaesthesia while waiting for the gen to function which might take up to 30 mins. Sometimes patients arrest under the knife but since monitors are not working,it takes longer to notice and when they do notice, it's too late for the patient. So do not talk about light as if it's not a valid complaint cos it is. So many life saving procedures are delayed cos hospital staff are waitihg for power supply. You do what u can do with ur lamp and leave d rest till power is restored which doesn't Bode well for the patient. Buhari is not at fault but he is the current C-in -C and the one that can address our current problems through his technocrats. There's no point calling on GEJ or OBJ, that would be a bloody waste of time. Doctors attitude is different, no power supply is a different problem. They are mutually exclusive issues. You can't or shouldn't say until one should be resolved before tackling the other, we won't get anything done that way. Let all the issues be addressed on their merit. Thank you

    4. Yes we'll call Buhari cos he's the President and promised to solve all our problems when elected.

I doubt if this will change, Aso Villa clinic got more allocation in the 2016 budget than the 3 top Teaching hospitals (including LUTH) in the country yet Baba ran to UK to treat ordinary ear infection

      It is well

Noone is blaming Buhari but he is the president of the nation and as such,he can address the issue.

My neighbour was asked to pay 2k for fuel and she was in labour. The nurse said she only has a torch-light fone and the phone's battery was dead. She eventually paid for fuel and before the person who went for the fuel came back, she had put to bed.

They used the mid-wives torch-light phone with an almost dead battery. What if the battery just went off in the course of the delivery?

The Health sector in Nigeria needs urgent attention and calling the president to the situation on ground isn't out of place.

May God save us from us.

Even after reading this blog post alone am I motivated to go the extra mile?
Because in order to do a normal days job you must go the extra mile.
Including spending money out of my own pocket for ungrateful people that will still turn around and say rubbish.
I remember when there was no oxygen in LUTH for 2 weeks!!!
Of course expect people to die.
And when it happens who do they blame... (beating drums) THE DOCTOR.
There was no light to screen blood, so no blood to transfused for emergencies, people die. Who do you blame..???
Well she has already said it, She blames MY ATTITUDE.

    10. There's this new thing, it's called a "Generator". People never want to take responsibility for anything, always waiting for the government. No work ethics whatsoever. People are making it sound like power failure is a newly discovered app or something. In civilised countries they have constant light but still Hospitals and Businesses have standby generators. I know common sense is not common but come on!!

Where I served as a corpse, coming from Lagos, didn't have much on me but I had to buy medications for some patients(children)who couldn't afford it but I Thank God for His abundant grace. It is not easy working under hazardous condition, it takes the grace of God. I know private hospitals aren't the same but most govt hospitals are a write off!

    13. The CMD is a doctor. Govt gives them money on a monthly basis to buy fuel for generator and other such expenses but they will embezzle everything and leave the patients to suffer.

The person that took this picture and posted it, what are u trying to achieve? So a teaching Hospital can't afford fuel or the Gen can't be repaired or what?

I am nt a fan of buhari's Government, but Nigeria I knw has been in darkness since before obasanjo's tenure and we have gotten used to it.

So am guessing the @Mbuhari is jst a tag cos He's the president of the country and not cos he's the cause of the darkness. In that case they forgot to tag the Governor of the state.

    3. I stand to be corrected, but our doctors should share in the blame. My darling friend lost her baby in the womb 2days before her due date at national hospital, Abuja. A week beforr then, the baby had been diagnosed with low heart rate, instead of the doctor to recommend her for emergency CS, they sent her home. Whereas, another friend was also diagnosed with low heart rate at 36weeks in the US and immediately they rushed her for Cs. Furthermore, I know alot of people who lost loved ones in National hospital that could have been avoided.

A hospital that looks outwardly beautiful and inside is as scrappy as 'F' old and rusty equipment in their delivery rooms, smelly, airless and stuffy recovery rooms after delivery with dirty toilets and lacking something as simple as worm water for bath. The entire hospital is a mess, or is it their over staffed underdeveloped and under paid personnel? All they do is gossip about the management and do I blame them?

  9. Stella please don't start. You don't stay in Nigeria so you don't know what goes on in the medical field.. I'm not in the medical field but I see what doctors go thru in government hospitals. This doctors are over worked and you expect them not to have attitude?? One doctor will attend to a patient from 8am to 5pm.. Haba. That's way too much.. What do you expect a doctor who has been seeing patient from morning till night to do?? He will be exhausted, tired and won't five his best..

I once took my child to Luth for something and there was so light. No light. What the hell?? Some people who needed some things done with light were asked to come back another day hoping their would be light. This place is suppose to have a standard generator running at all time.. My appointment that day at luth was for 10am and I was there by 9:30, but the crowd was too much so I didn't see the doctor until 2pm. By the time I got into the consultation room the doctor looked exhausted. I was like you lool tired and he said he actually is. That he has been seeing patients from 8am. That in a sane country this wouldn't be. You can't over work a doctor. The government is supposed to employ Alot of doctors but they wouldn't because they want to save cost..

That doctor was so tired I thanked God I didn't come for sleuthing serious. With the way he even attended to me, if not that I stroked a conversation with him, he would have attended to me in a hurry so he could see other patients lined up waiting for him..

Please I use to blame doctors for a lot of things but my experience at luth thay day and others I have had at a mother and child center during my son's antenatal made me think twice..

You will go for antenatal and there are about 8 doctors to attend to over 200 pregnant women. I live mother and child centers because the hospitals are usually up to standard with everything you need especially the one in surulere but my God those doctor's are over worked. They start attending to women from 8am and still attending till 4pm. Haba. 8 doctors only for this amount of people. And it's not like 4 will work now and 4 later. The 8 of them start working same time. You will go for antenatal by 8am and you haven't seen a doctor at 2pm because of the number of people and doctors and the doctors wanting to do their best..

Please the government should look into this things. It's very alarming. And please can doctors be paid on time?? Why delay their salaries?? This people shouldn't even be experiencing things like delay in salary as they are in charge of the health of the citizens. A doctor who is over worked, under paid or hasn't been paid will give attitude problems.. Any other worker will give attitude too if they experience what this people experience everyday..

A happy doctor will do his job well. Go to private hospitals where this supposed consultants in government hospital own and you will see how you will be treated like egg.

    1. What are you talking about? 8-5 shift is exhaustion? Doctors here work 12 hour shifts 7a-7pm and they don't have attitudes... nurses work the same, one do double shifts self or 16 hours. And they dare not show a bit of attitude. It's what they signed up for, it's a stressful job. Please stop making excuses. The govt needs to fix the light situation and the health care professionals need an attitudinal check and have compassion on human lives sheesh!!!!

    3. Wetin this one dey yarn. Lazy Nigerian workers. Telling a doctor 'you look tired'.
Surgeons work 12 hours in Australia, if you're a mental health nurse you work a 12hr shift, yes! Doctors work for 12hours a day, from theatre to ward and that's the routine for the day. Shebi dem get 2 heads for abroad?
You people are always good at comparing with Western countries, una don travel before?

It's not about knowing d stuff it's about seeing the facilities to use d stuff to treat d patients. It's not d attitude dat is d issue Stella.. you can't sit on ur high horse and spew what you don't know with all due respect. It's not d attitude, it's frustration. It's frustrating wen u see a patient and u know d patient needs so and so but dere is no way because it's not available or too expensive. I know how many times he has come home soooo discouraged. I feel that after sometime, they become disconnected from d system so that it doesn't get to them. It's not d work of the Drs to fix d health system Stella, it's d work of the govt. Or is it d Doctor or nurse dat is going to put d lite? So if they change their attitude, light will show abi?

    9. Before I forget,
This same doctors after consultation will still do ward round, the hours I talked about there was for consultation. After whixh they will start ward round, then if they have emergency cases and all they would still be there..

I can tell you for. A fact that this doctors in Nigeria work for over 12 hours here.

So yes they are over worked..
Abroad doctors don't work 12hrs at a go. And they don't attend to the mountain of patient the Nigerian doctors attend to

Have you gone for consultation in a government hospital?? The crowds their is alarming... And few doctors are in charge of this, you expect them not to be tired when in 8 hours they would have attended to over 100 patient?? And that's for one doctors. And he still has people waiting..

Why do you think people flee from government hospitals?? Because of the crowd. The day you have an appointment with a doctor there please be sure to scrape off all you have planned for thay day.

So please do not compare them with their foreign counterpart who work in sane environment and robust pay..

That's why I said thank God it wasn't a serious issue.. Imagine I went there for something serious and my time was delayed like this because they are short staffed

    11. Thank you JayEm. These ones are just talking anyhow. 12 hours is standard shift. Between those hours do you know how many patients they see. You'll be exhausted, no doubt, but at the end of the day you feel rewarded by the many thanks knowing you've helped a life or two. The only difference is doctors are very well paid and valued abroad. Again, it's no secret so if you know doctors are overworked, not paid well, the necessary amenities aren't in place then who sent you to go read medicine? Only to end up complaining and having attitudes? In the process lives will be lost. It's putiful. There is no excuse for exhaustion, attitude and the likes. You better keep that at home!

      Delete
    12. Say all you want but you can not expect a Nigerian doctor to work like those abroad. Take a look at the pay of those working abroad.. Take Alot at the conducive environment they work in with standard equipment. Here the equipment is enough to frustate a doctor..

And yes my inlaw is a doctor abroad and I know he isn't over worked. He doesn't work 12hrs stretch. He has break hours and goes back to work... He doesn't work round the clock.. So fab mum is right about the 12hrs issue

Government should fix the hospitals, bring it up to standard and pay the doctors well without delaying their salaries..

If the hospitals in Nigeria were up to standards, the president who banned government officials from travelling abroad to receive treatment wouldn't have gone to UK for treatment of the ear..

That's something a good ENT doctor will do if he has everything up to standard in the hospital and conducive environment..

You can imagine going to your office with no light to work, the room is damp and stuffy, you go to toilet, it's dirty, no water to flush. You don't have a working computer, no paper in the printer, no printer sef. Land line to call clients is not working. How are they supposed to be happy to work. With all this they are payed peanuts.
Just one day that my office gen stopped working for few hours while Mikano was fixing it. You shld see people sweating, complaining, my boss even left the office and said he can't work in such environment. This was just for 4hrs before gen started working. The office was dis-organized, now can you imagine dese doctors going through that daily.
I am yet to see a private hospital where doctors are paid handsomely, nurses are paid well. They have good working environment, they can sleep on their break and have coffee break, lunch for free. Good rooms to relax on off. And they have their apparatus.
My private hospital has all this, we pay thru our nose. But my hubby will say if you can't pay good money for ur health, wat are you living for.
I am yet to see any lazy or nasty nurse in that environment.
They are so pleasant and nice, always giving my daughter lollipop and ballon when they want to give her injection. They pet her sef.

How do you want them to function well that's over 24 hour call. They don't even go home the next morning because they have to continue till 5pm again haba. The anonymous talking about Doctors and nurses abroad next time you're on vacation kindly volunteer at one of the government hospitals in Nigeria because if you've not had a first hand experience working in a Nigerian hospital you can not know what Fab mum is talking about. As a doctor in Naija hospital you work as a nurse, lab technician, blood donor and even as an orderly. It's so stress full and demanding that at the end of the day you can't even do anything tangible for yourself bcos you're exhausted already. In western hospitals correct me if I'm wrong the Doctors do not run up and down to obtain investigation results, blood, drugs, etc. this makes your work very easy. They have phlebotomist that takes blood sample, order drugs on the computer and investigations. Please Naija hospitals and western hospitals aren't the same. Naija Doctors go through a lot of stress and that's why most people leave at the slightest opportunity. Doctors and Nurses abroad please volunteer in Nigerian hospitals when you're around. Thank you

Thank you so much. People come herr and want to compare doctors abroad with Nigerian doctors which isn't fair

This doctors in Nigeria are over worked. They play every role. Go to general Hospital before talking and see the crowd there. Doctors abroad don't attend to the number of patients their Nigeria counterpart attend to. I feel so much pity for them. And to think their pay is low..

See how much they pay doctors abroad.. But here they pay them stipends and even owe them. And still over work them. You will see a doctor running around to get results, get this and get that..

  17. Doctors have been crying out from time immemorial, the government just doesn't want to hear. As regards their attitude, there's a lot of politics in the medical profession so everyone is advised to stay on their lane otherwise ur seniors will have it out for u. I'm talking from experience, don't blame their attitude. If the basic things are being provided for we the doctors, there will be less morality rate. So Stella, no one is blaming anyone except the government for lack of hearing our cry.

That alone, goes a long way. But no, they will be insulting you on top of your illness. Asking you if they are the 'causer' of your sickness. Just imagine! I can't deal abeg. Stella is right.

  24. Our problems are far from being over when we don't realise that we are our own problem. The negligence and incompetence of a "paediatrician" in FIRST RIVERS hospital in Port Harcourt led to my 13days old son's death because he couldn't be bothered even when the baby was down with infection from also their lack of professionalism. They couldn't do a surgery as simple as circumcision without cutting through my baby's vein and leaving the child in pain and swollen penis. Baby was cranky, infected, bleeding and visibly distressed, paediatrician said nothing was wrong, as a first time mum what level of experience did I have? Smh. I leave that man and the hospital to God and their conscience if they have any. Wouldn't be surprised if he is somewhere twitting trash and blaming the government of the day. ...and yes bye to PRIVATE HOSPITALS.

This is why I will continue to blame Madueke Diezani. If she did not steal all that billions of dollars, they could have used the money to help Nigeria's healthcare system and not buying bags and house.

  25. Lol@ doctors fault.

Everyone has a part to play.
Its very easy to point fingers at any1 esp wen u no nothing abt a situation.

Just lastwk wednessday...I watch a young mother enter the ward with a 3yr old dead baby.
I felt like giving her a resounding slap(babies cant relay to u wen dia illness becomes severe). Her baby had been sick all day, the day b4. Dey forced fed a convulsing child with local herbal concortion n poor child must av choked on it.wen she was told her baby was dead, she quickly backed her dead child n covered his head with a piece of clothe n walked out crying...I watched d matron advice her to control hersef n nt to let the public transport driver no she is carrying a dead child, else she wld pay extra on tfare.
I can go on ...bottom line is d economy is hard, too many malnourished n sick BEAUTIFUL BABIES(ppl present to hosp only wen situatn has gotten outta hand).
So u can blame Buhari partly for dis...if u going to change policies plz make some cushioning strategies too.

I can testify to the fact that public health workers deep hands into their personal funds to help patients with investigations or getting medications or paying hosp bills.

And concerning docs attitude....Stella u don't no half of what's happening here in Osun state...there is a policy dat says if dey catch any doc working while odas are on strike, 15k wld be deducted from ur salary.

  26. Stella, at this point I'd have to shake my head for u. So sorry about that but u really deserve it. Ahn ahn. You are asking if epileptic power supply is d reason why people are dying and I tel u boldly, that YES, it is part of the reason.
What is doing u sef. Maybe they were not complaining then as they could still afford to fuel their generators and use. Stella, I am not ashamed to say this but since d increase in fuel price, I haven't bought a single drop of fuel for my gen. I charge my phone and powerbank in school and any time I see light, I watched TV and do my laundry. I bet u that half of the people in d country are like this now.

So is it Buhari's fault? Hell yeah, if things are going right in the country, who dyu praise, the president, ain't it? So if things are going wrong, who do u blame? Me????

Yes, I've always been pro pdp but this is way above that. If you know how terrible light has been now ehn since this govt took over, u won't be blaming gej for this. When there was light during gej's tenure, they said it was because of d raining season, now it's raining season and we thank God wen we see light 2hrs in d middle of the night. Yes, that's how bad things are now.

So pls pls and pls, let me hear word this morning. If u really dunno what to say concerning some things, it's best not to say anything at all.

    Long live my dear Country.

A country filled with people who will never support something positive if the person bringing it is not from their regions and does not speak their languages. Have we come out to protest and out rightly condemned the activities of this Niger delta avengers bombing and destroying gas pipelines and oil facilities? No, why should we? How else will we laugh, insult and mock the president when he fails? SMH. This country will continue like this until we are ready for change then it will start from us. We frustrate the efforts of the government both past and present and then turn around to accuse them of not delivering on their campaign promises, this is not to say the government is completely faultless but we frustrate them, a typical of what is presently going on. When I said 8-5 I meant that for consultations.. Have you. Seen the crowd that go for consultations daily!?

During my antenatal days at mother and child surulere I was always number 100+ and there would be Alot of people after me. My turn never comes until 1pm to 2pm. Then imagine others after me the time they would leave. They finish by 4 or 5pm for just consultations. Even if that's all they did for. The day whixh wouldn't be, pity them. 8 doctors for over 250 patients or more.

The government has to look into it.
It's not easy what they are doing. Fine they decided to. But doesn't mean we should now try to drag them down.

I asked the nurse why is a doctor selling dettol???lol. And she corrected me.
