Mother's Forum..

This is for those with questions regarding how to handle baby and motherhood issues. It MIGHT not be a regular but will come every time there is a serious question sent in that needs attention......

HOW DOES ONE GET A CHILD TO START EATING FOOD AFTER EXCLUSIVE
BREAST FEEDING?

This is for mothers in the house to help out o, my 13 months old baby has refused everything food except to suck breast. He is quiet chubby( when I tell people he doesn't eat they just look at me and say madam why are you telling lies) and achieving all milestones up to his age but the not wanting  food is a big challenge as I have to breastfeed like every 30 mins interval.

I have tried so many things, all just to make meal time fun, from dancing to singing and playing but iro  ni, the sight of plate and spoon is the beginning of 3rd world war and if you try to force him he will just vomit everything on you. Please I need advice on how best to make him try to eat even just a little.

I am so discouraged and worried and already concluded no 6 months exclusive for my next baby.

    2. Exclusive babies don't usually eat. Have 3months old and have introduced milk already cos am a working mum. You have to force him to take d milk sef as little as he's. Just keep trying with tea maybe. Cos he has to stop breast. But you waited too long. Take him to his grandparents to spend sometime without you or go out and leave him with someone for a whole day. He will eat whatever they offer him.

    3. Have you try giving him up to your mum or someone you can trust for a whole day or two
He will sure eat if you are not in sight to breast feed him

After a while, I started introducing various food to him little quantity each time while paying attention to the ones he enjoyed eating. That was how we conquerd. Good luck

  10. We bless God for all Mothers. Exclusive is good, but as they grow it could also be tiring depending if you are a busy Mom or stay home. Are you saying there's nothing he likes tasting apart from breastfeeding milk? Try different things who know your baby might like one, my son wasn't eating too @ all, but by trying we noticed he love tea & bread, that was the starting point @ 3 years, now though he eat, tea & bread remain his favourite. Talk to your Paediatrician, mayb he might just know how to adv u. Meanwhile, remember as you are trying other food,as in processed food, try to also know about some very local food that is nourishing which your baby might like. Since children don't come with manuals we have to keep trying till we discover / know what's good for them or what they like in this case.

    1. His pediatrician actually isn't worried and insist I breastfeed till he is 2, says I shouldn't force him, that he might not be ready to take solids. Very few cases like this, that he will eventually eat with time.

  12. I went thru same thing. After exclusive breast feeding my son refused to eat. It was war. But I wasn't about to give up. I bought everything baby food to try out for him. From heinz baby pudding, to Garber baby pudding, sma gold, Nan, cerelac,. I had everything. And every day I try 2 at least. And everyday he will throw up. This was when he was 6 months and 2 weeks. It as worse with milk as he didn't even allow thay stay in his mouth for a sec.i kept milk aside and faced the puddings for 2 weeks. I'll put it in his mouth and close his nose for a second , so he will swallow then I leave his nose. We did this and I realized after feeding him the Garber pudding, no matter how long it takes, he will throw every thing out. But same wasn't for heinz. Anyway, heinz was sweet so I could understand. It didn't mean feeding him the pudding was easy but he was leaving it in his Tommy. So I continued with it but the down side is I had to hold his nose for a second to swallow if I don't, he will hold t in his mouth for as long as he is awake and pour if when he doses off..

Then I introduce cerelqc and was adding sma gold but he will throw everything out after I stop feeding him. He didn't so same with the Nan. Then I dumped sma gold for Nan. But I still had to hold his nose for him to swallow or he will hold it in his mouth it throw it out immediately.

I got use to holding his nose even though I had to do it when the dad isn't around because he wouldn't take it. By the time he was 8 months there was no much resistance again. Then I also got a woman to make this pap for me. Not like the normal pap. She uses like 4 grains to make the pap. And it comes out very nice. I started force feeding him that one too with a lot of milk and by the time he was 9 month, he was no longer raising this puddings, cerelac, golden morn and pap.

I stopped breast feeding when he was 9 months. And by the time he was 11 months I tried starting solid food for him and it was war. Couldn't hold his nose in this one since it was solid food. I kept trying and trying and trying, he won't eat even indimi. When he was 1yr and 4 months I enrolled him in school and paid for their school lunch. He was in creche and I stopped putting pap in his bag, just golden morn and milk. So. They made him start eating. Boy, was I thankful. By the time he was done with first term he had started eating but little little. By the end of second term he was eating more. Now he is 2yrs plus in kg1, going on kg2 by September and the boy eats everything eats be aside tea. He eats everything and in big portion.

So keep trying and trying and if you can't, enroll him in a school so they can hel

Yea these alternatives are amazing@Fab Mum.

Heinz will give you variety of meals.
Then you have Gerber mixed fruits,yogurt..absolutely amazing.

There are very nice Cow and Gate puddings too you can use.

      Nutriben has 8cereals in one.
These are some things you can buy for now if you can... The list is endless..we eat everything!

I also personally make Pap for my kids..Dawa and millet mixed together.. We store in Ziploc bags.

There's no way your boy will not be eating solids in months to come.

Remember his milk cannot be overlooked ooh.
They need their baby milk until they are way into their 3year. Yep!

When you are ready to start solids , try adding breastmilk to whatever to adjust baby to new taste while still retaining the breastmilk taste he's used to .

    1. My son never loved bottle feeding. All the feeding bottles i bought were just a total waste. As we didn't use for more than 2 weeks.

And he didn't like any milk alone. The only way he takes milk is if it's in another food like cerelac or golden morn. So I had to put a lot of milk in his food..

Hes 2yrs plus and he still won't drink tea. He eats and drinks everything but won't take tea.

  18. Hmm. My baby wanted to start that after exclusive breastfeeding of 6 months. I remember even going to the hospital coz of it. Try bottle feeding him. And spice up his food. I don't mean pepper oo. For my baby's pap, I add dried grinded crayfish (the giant ones) and egg yolk b4 making it. The aroma of the crayfish is enough to make her want to take it. Then she loves eating with me. So try to give him little when u are eating. You can boil plantain or potato and just give him to hold and play with, before you know it, he will put it in his mouth . It's a gradual process. And try to leave him and go out or put him in a creche, if he doesn't see you, he will eat what he is given . Wish you all the best.

  23. You should have started introducing solids earlier. Toddlers are generally picky, not to talk of an exclusively breastfed one.
Start slow. Do not give him breast for as long as you manage, say 2 hours. Afterwards, offer him a cup of pumped breast milk. Once he gets used to the cup, mix the breast milk with toddler milk in equal parts. When he gets used to that, add pap to it or rice cereal. Do these before venturing into proper solids, but that depends on your baby.
All babies are different, but then again, all babies thrive on routine and consistency.

  29. Off topic, guys, but I seriously need advice!!
Hubby and I got married in September 2014, had our first baby in December 2015. We planned to start trying for number 2 three years later. When I was six weeks postpartum, doctor gave me a progestogen contraceptive pill to be taking.
Long story short, I've been taking this contraceptive pill everyday since he gave it to me, but I just found out I'm 4 weeks pregnant!! I'm so confused, because I've been taking the pill regularly! My son is only 6 months old. He'll soon get mobile and I can't see myself with a big belly running after a toddler! Plus I'm a career woman so how will I handle 2 under 2? This baby just started sleeping through the night, you know how babies are! I'm not ready to go through sleepless nights again, plus breastfeeding. And swelling and vomiting all over again!
I haven't told my husband. I just want to quietly abort this baby but I keep having nightmares about the abortion! Do you guys have any tips or advice for me?

  30. Story of my life! My madam is almost 8 months but still sucks like it's going out of fashion! Tried giving her different types of Milk no way!
Tried introducing her to solids, today she will agree to take pap, or oat or cereal, then I will be happy. Tomorrow if I bring any food close to her she will be giving me side eyes like Stella, lol!
    It's breastmilk 247!
Well I've switched over to our local foods and so far, so good. She takes mashed potatoes either sweet or Irish, I add egg yoke and small butter to it. Or I add sardine to the mashed potatoes.
I also give her boiled or fried plantains, though you must mash it well well.
She doesn't eat it so much, but @lest she now knows that there are good food out there and not just breastmilk.
But one thing I know that works for her is fruits. Most mornings, I mash avocado pears and give her, and she eats it very well. Or at times I will add banana to it, vaam she will finish it.
And yes, I just discovered that she loves breadfruit (ukwa) very very very well oooo! I do dish out hers before I start adding pepper and other things to the ukwa.
And the oat, I give her, it must be grinded well before preparation abeg. And I learnt from one Facebook forum to be mix it with apple,
You should peeled off the back of the apple,n then pieces it and boil for about 5-10mins or till soft, mash and add to oat or give baby like that.
So for now, my madam and I are experimenting with fruits and our local fresh food.
    I hope this helps you.
She still sucks ooo, very well too, but I'm really trying to wean her but she's just not buying it just yet. And to make matters complicated, we are co-sleeping, so once she has the urge she will start tugging @ my boobs! Lol!
And yes, you are a great mom for breastfeeding baby till now 13months, Motherhood ROCKS!

  31. Worried mother.there is just a 3 day practise you need to do,after then, your baby won't reach out for your breast again.Only if u have mind to endure the night cries for 3 days.

  32. You should have introduced solids earlier.. My son is 8 months old and loves to eat adult food. I started giving him blended fruits at 5months, then he got blended veggies at 6 months. I still breastfed him, but he can also eat what ever you give him. Start buy giving your baby food twice a day, she might refuse it but with time she would get used to it.

  33. I also did exclusive breastfeeding with my first kid. To wean your kid off breastmilk, let him spend the weekend with family; your mum if she is around. She will introduce him to solids and even if he refuses the first time, he will eventually eat as he'll be hungry and you wont be there for him to cry to. It will be tough on both of them but by Monday, your kid will be eating solids. Worked for me.

  36. Try and start with something soft and light. Am still breastfeeding my son, he's just four months and some weeks old. I wish to breastfeed him for another 9months before i will add cream to it. I will breastfeed him for 9months and then i will start giving him light food like peas, carrots, vegetables, rice, meat, chicken and fish cooked and blended together. Lots of babies likes it.
I started giving my son chamomile with water recently and he enjoyed it, so, i think it will not be difficult for me to start feeding him with his food when the time comes.

  37. This is a very welcome post.
I bought cow and gate milk for my 5 month+ baby but she refused to take it using both feeding bottle and cup and spoon so I ended up taking it myself. Very sweet tasting milk.
I ll be making pap for her by the time she's 6 months old. I pray she likes it. Fingers crossed.

  38. Whoa my life, 10 years ago with my 1st daughter. Try to express your breast milk and mix it with baby cereal, not too thick dear. Pour it in a baby cup and give to him. You can start on weekends when daddy is at home. Make sure you don't offer him breast milk at least for good 2hours. Leave him with daddy to get feed on the cereal. You can also try mixing the breast milk with Weetabix. Just give him like 2weeks to get use to mixing breast milk with series of baby cereal , before introducing adult food. Start adult food by putting whatever you and daddy eat in his mouth little by little.

  39. I also went through the same thing... Try Friso Gold its like cerelac but it is imported from spain and it is quite sweet and your baby will love it but make sure u start little by little and give him breast milk after he eats... They sell it at any supermarket in Nigeria

I did exclusive for 5mnths and 2weeks. My daughter refused taking any form of milk except I use it on her pap or cereal. Her first food was eba and soup, she never rejected it nd she loved it,inshut that night she slept very well without disturbing me,till the next morning. Till today she eats anything so far it is food.

  42. Introducing feeding bottle from birth or at least from 3 months is key, especially for working mothers because it becomes easier to introduce solids from 6 months upwards. My little one started taking breast milk in bottle from birth ,and when I switched to baby milk he dint reject it at all now he is 10 months and eats everything!!!

  43. Okay you need to stop
Already! Have someone else feed him begin by introducing pureed fruits etc you can add a little bmilk so it does not taste too strange. At over a year your baby needs other food to remain healthy.

  44. Hi poster, just went through all the comments....interesting. First, I'll say you shouldn't hit yourself hard/feel bad, it's not too late to wean him. You are an amazing mum and you are doing a great job so far.

Something I'll like to correct from other comments: please don't force feed your baby (blocking the nose, etc), babies could choke/aspirate the food and get lung infections or even pass on. That some people got away with it doesn't mean it's right (take this from a physician and a mum... me)

Carry baby on your laps or on his high chair close to you when it's YOUR own meal time. Make delicious faces while you're eating so he'll be interested in what you are doing (you could even smile and say things like "hmmmm, tasty", "so delicious"). Out of curiosity, he'll want to eat what you're eating, so make sure it's something tasty and mashable (plantain and beans/eggs, cookies in milk, golden morn cereal, tasty rice, pasta or noodles in sauce, Amala and delicious soup......in general 'very' tasty meals (not salty or sugary, but in moderate quantities).

Note that at first, he may only take a little at a time, maybe just 4 or 5 spoons, but with time, he will demand more. Also introduce 100% juice and tastier milk options, e.g. Milo and milk (he is old enough to take adult milk, not in excess though).
Don't send him off to his grandparents/relatives for weaning without trying these new food textures though, let him get used to it for a while though.

With all these and most importantly, prayers, he will let go gradually.
    All the best poster!

  47. Why do you breast feeding a 13 month baby. I think he is good enough.
You should stop breastfeeding him and start making his work with himself or his friends. My boy is interested in pvz plush collection. I am so happy that he has his own interest. He can choose the doll from www.toyswil.com
