A single monkey caused a nationwide blackout in Kenya after falling on to a crucial piece of equipment.
The monkey fell on a transformer at the Gitaru hydroelectric power station on Tuesday, electricity provider KenGen said in a statement.
The transformer then tripped, resulting in the loss of 180 megawatts of power and triggering a blackout across Kenya.
Power was restored almost four hours later and the monkey survived its adventure, KenGen said.
It has now been taken in by the Kenya Wildlife Service.
"KenGen power installations are secured by electric fencing which keeps away marauding wild animals," the statement said.
"We regret this isolated incident and the company is looking at ways of further enhancing security at all our power plants."
The Business Daily Africa website reported that businesses bore the brunt of Tuesday's blackout.
Many had installed generators as a result of previous blackouts, it said.

ReplyDeleteWhat a sane company/country apologising for nationwide blackout. My area has been without for the past 4days now. Rather than getting apology, we'll get their ridiculous bill.
ReplyDelete4 days is nothing. We Haven't Had power supply since the beginning of April, no explanation yet they brought a bill of 8k last month. Rubbish!!!
DeleteNa waah. Kenya get a blackout of 4 hours and The Power Co. apologized to citizens. But in Nigeria it is everyday blackout and nobody apologize to the citizens. Yet Buhari is not ashamed of himself.
ReplyDeleteAlmighty father, you are the guardian of the senseless please bestow sense upon our brother James nwa chineke. We know you have done it and been will continue to do it for his village he insists on disgracing IJN.
DeleteHahahahahahaha!!!!!
DeleteAt least they know the cause of their own blackout, do we even know ours?
ReplyDeleteLolssss...
DeleteNa big monkeys in the house ooo, and no one to carry them to wildlife
Just Lookat.. Even ordinary Kenya has steady power supply.. Nigeria sef ehn..
ReplyDeleteJust 4 hours?.. see enjoyment. The transformer must have been made from twigs cos how will the weight of a monkey trip a whole transformer.?
ReplyDeleteAnd dey had to blame it on a poor monkey?
ReplyDeleteVIP Monkey or "End time Monkey"? Lol
ReplyDeleteHian .... 4 hours blackout made news... Y'all shd come to Nigeria n see what's what
ReplyDeleteWe cannot have stable electricity. When some people are importing different sizes of Generator monthly into the country. There was a time during d OBJ Admnistration when Senators wanted to Ban importation of Generators.n Enforce NEPA now PHC to ensure regular supply
ReplyDeleteThe root of our nation has seriously been damaged. What we are sufferring today are the bad chioces made by our Leaders from OBJ,GEJ & BUHARI Tenure. since 1999 till date......See it is going to get worse
I dey provoke becos in MAY we now see light use now June. still no light...
Only 4 hours and most of them are crying. Kenya is better than Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteHe no go better for NEPA people in this country. Blackout is now like the air we breath in this country. He no go better for all that spoilt this country. AMEN
Really! So all the Monkey in idanre fell on our own transformer many many years ago, in fact their grandchildren are still falling on the open space there. Lord have mercy on Nigeria
ReplyDeleteIn comparison, this is a loss of 180MW and the ENTIRE Kenya was in blackout!
ReplyDeleteEgbin is 650MW and that power is not enough for South West alone. In essence, there is no power in large areas of Kenya on a normal basis as only Main/Major cities/places are allocated electricity.
Meanwhile in Nigeria, every single village is allocated electricity and no one wants his/her village/town to be listed as not Main/Major to have electricity to ensure that we have 24hr electricity in our main/major cities while we plan for the expansion to others.
Our deep sentiments has always been a clog in our abilities to take inconvenient decisions that will be to the benefit of the overall citizens.
