Federal Government Sacks Striking Resident Doctors

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has directed Chief Medical Directors, CMDs, and medical directors, MDs, of federal government tertiary health institutions to fill the vacancies created by resident doctors who have “abandoned” their training programme.

Apparently disturbed by the directive by the Federal Government to the various teaching hospitals to replace the resident doctors, the leadership of the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has agreed to suspend its strike at a meeting with other health sector stakeholders on Tuesday.

The Association’s leadership also appealed to members to suspend the strike until the next meeting scheduled for July 14.

The decision Vanguard learnt emanated from the meeting between resident doctors and other stakeholders, organised by the Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogàra in Abuja.

The meeting will reconvene in three weeks to review progress made in the implementation of agreements reached in the meeting slated for July.

Resident doctors a.k.a. trainee doctors, that constitute the main support force and backbone for medical practice in the public sector, embarked on a nationwide strike on Monday, under the auspices of the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD.

*So,what is the way forward now?????

    3. It's certainly not the way to go. I don't understand the role of government in our society anymore.
You've put workers on hunger for a long period of time and when they spoke out you 'fired' them. Isn't this insane?! This is a complete balderdash and should be frown at by any sane citizen. ‎
Isn't the health sector suppose to be treated with all preeminence?! ‎

  4. This government is so crazy. they don't have any solution to any single problem in this country. Acting as though we are in military Era, even at that no result. Every sector has failed. This is simply the worst time to live in Nigeria

  6. I don't blame doctors for seeking greener pastures once fully qualified. They're so maltreatment and undervalued. If they like let them sack all doctors they will see where they get their replacements from.
The government and all previous governments have failed the medical sector again. How about listening to their complaints and address the ones that are reasonable?

  14. Same FG that said Banks shouldn't sack workers have now sacked Doctors. My prayer is sacking doctors in a time like this won't affect God's people in Jesus name - Amen. Ajala the traveler's people like free/awoof thing, so one can imagine those hospitals in the North that treat their people free without a single Doctor if "its" nationwide.

When a leader lacks direction and can't even remember his starting point, this is what the nation get. God hear our prayer.
