Ecobank Nigeria Fires 1,040 Workers

The gale of job losses being witnessed in the country due to the current economic hardship has caught up with Ecobank Nigeria, which has sacked over 1,040 of its employees.

The PUNCH reported on Tuesday that Diamond Bank Plc sacked over 200 members of its workforce, while FBN Holdings, the parent company of First Bank of Nigeria Limited, recently said it would prune the number of its employees by 1,000.

Investigations  revealed that the affected staff members of Ecobank included full time and contract workers.
Top officials of the pan-African lender confirmed that the initial list of those to be sacked had over 1,400, workers but was later reduced to “a little above 1,000.”
Ecobank spokespersons declined to comment on the number of workers who were disengaged.
However, the lender said in a statement that it had converted over 200 outsourced personnel to permanent employees as part of its drive to attract and reward talent, while also repositioning for improved efficiency.

In line with the recognition of excellence, the bank also said it had recently implemented a merit-based pay increase for the top performers across all cadres.
The Managing Director, Ecobank, Mr. Charles Kie, was quoted as saying that converting qualified outsourced staff to permanent workers was in line with the bank’s commitment to developing and growing talent by nurturing its people along their career paths and giving them access to higher responsibilities.
He said the bank was resolute that recognising and rewarding excellence would drive its goal of achieving exceptional performance in the industry.

Ecobank Nigeria is a member of the Ecobank Group, which is present in 36 African countries. The Group employs nearly 19,000 people from 40 different countries in over 1,200 branches and offices.

ETI had posted over N40bn decline in its profit for the 2015 financial year owing to high impairment charges.

  19. A friend of mine was sacked by first bank because she didn't say sorry when a customer filed a complaint. The customer said he wants a complaint form to lay a complaint, she give him the form,he filled it,gave it back to her and left. She was called in almost immediately and was told, you're fired..why didn't you say sorry to that customer that filed a complaint. That was how she became jobless. 8 years with the bank..smh..

    5. Mrs bekks, you took the words out of my mouth. @ Anon, your friend is not telling the full story! She must have been rude. Most of those bankers and other staff lack common courtesy and offer terrible customer service. I don't even feel sorry for her, let it be the lesson she learnt. Banks need to train people they employ to always smile, be polite and sensitive to customers needs

  20. Stella you are even more concerned about peoples welfare more than bloggers here in Nigeria that can see and feel people's suffering, more grease to your elbow. These is really a wrong time for people to loose their job....

  23. May be the government has to rethink her TSA policy particularly looking at the fact that most Nigerian banks are not creatively self-sustaining but depend on deposits from government agencies, departments, parastatals, etc to remain operational. Even though job losses in the banking industry is somewhat a recurrent decimal, the implementatiom of the TSA policy may have harsh ripple effects that may extend to other sectors of the economy.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Omg...with this kind of economy? So sad may God help secure another job so sad, I can imagine the pains and tears coupled with this hardship God pls help them.

  27. The country is already saturated with unemployed youths and the banking sector is still releasing more plus the ones graduating from the universities. Even if one decides to be independent, there's no money in circulation to trade or make transactions. Buhari! Buhari!! Buhari!!! How many times I call you? This suffering you are inflicting on the masses, there is God o!

  29. Ecobank is so ineffective and its no wonder they cant function without d loot from past govt. officials. Had to close my 2 accounts after I was getting statements for credit card deductions which were totally false! I never collected any credit card from them, but according to them, they issued one to me in 2014, went there to ask for proof of this but .... 7 weeks after, nothing's been given! Let them fold up until they are ready to practice banking as it should be. Idiots!

  32. GEJ introduced the TSA but the plan was to do it gradually so banks won't feel the effect as much and sack workers like what is happening. But una no dey reason, you believed what opposition told you without thinking about how it will affect YOU. Na to go and beg celebrities and start bashing them when they refuse una Sabi. Why are people not begging politicians they voted for to fulfill their promise?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Most of these banks are totally useless.
My advice, go back to farming. Or create your own job. That's how other economies develop.
For that person calling for a rethink on the TSA, apparently that is a corrupt as well as uncreative statement
