Tuta Absoluta Is Responsible For Tomato Scarcity In Nigeria..

The Kaduna State government has declared a state of emergency on tomato farming in the state, following the outbreak of a destructive pests.
The Commissioner of Agriculture, Dr. Maigari Daniel Manzo, who disclosed this at a press conference in Kaduna yesterday, said 80 per cent of tomato farms have been ravaged by a pest which blights tomato, called Tuta Absoluta.

Blame this Moth for the sudden scarcity of Tomato in Nigeria..

Tuta absoluta is a devastating pest of Tomato. It is originated from South America. Recently Tuta absoluta considered to be a serious threat to tomato production in Mediterranean region. The newly introduced pest from south America finding the shores of the Mediterranean a perfect new home where it can breed between 10-12 generations a year.

Each female can lay 250-300 eggs in her life time.

This pest is crossing boarders and devastating tomato production both protected and open fields. The infestation of Tuta absoluta also reported on potato, Aubergine and common beans.
Tuta absoluta is a very challenging pest to control. Effectiveness of chemical control is limited due to insect's nature of damage as well as its rapid capability of development of insecticide resistant strains. The use of biological factors are still largely under development and not ready to combat this pest effectively and in a cost effective way.  Sex pheromone trap is using as an early detection tool. Mass trapping and lure and Kill application of pheromone has been found to be effective to control Tuta absoluta. IPM strategies are being developed to control Tuta absoluta. Various active substances can be applied in combination with bio-rational control tactics.

Since the first detection in Spain in 2006, this pest is spreading rapidly across Southern Europe and North Africa to engulf the whole of the Mediterranean countries. Until today the presence of Tuta absoluta has been reported in Italy, France, Malta, United Kingdom, Greece, Switzerland, Portugal, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Albania during last two years. Tuta absoluta is already a serious pest in South America since the 80’s.

    2. The same applies to maize farming. There is a serious pest ravaging maize farms at the moment. There may also be need to declare state of emergency in the entire crop farming sector. We stated this year with maize at N53/kg and as at this Morg it is N106/kg. I agree with James Buhari may have invited all these pests to Nigeria during his numerous travels. Lol celebrated fool!

    1. A friend of mine confirmed this gist yesterday. He's into agriculture. We don't have agricultural solutions in Nigeria that's why such things take us unaware. Pest attacks come up all the time. I hope something can be done about this before it gets worse. This is why we should practice more of commercial farming that happens in developed countries. Subsistence farming leaves little room for professional or scientific contingency solutions in cases like this.

    2. This information here is real. Someone told me about this two weeks ago. He is into agricultural training or so, he actually drop some handbills to be distributed for him so I asked him with all been taught in school why is tomato scarce then he mentioned this insects that the name is even coined from the nature of the destuction that is always total. I asked him why some people are not educating people or speaking out instead of everyone blaming the government but he couldn't respond to that so we both agreed some people might be silent for polical reasons, you can't just trust our politicians.

  7. APC is now putting the blame on "tuta absoluta".

But for real Dangote is opening a Tomato Paste in Kano, if he reduces his price, I pity others. Farmers actually lined up to supply tomatoes both fresh and dry ones to him. The Coy is even by the road side. Everything must have blame in this APC's regime.

  23. It's amazing how how the entire country is running short of tomatoes just because the part of the country responsible for the all year round supply is having some sort of setbacks, yet some persons think that these people are dispensable.
Bottom line is we need each other to survive, no one is superior to another.
Tribe and ethnicity, religion and tongues etc starts and ends here on earth.
